[opensuse] question about compiling an app and installing

Hello All, I have been using Linux for a long time now but up until recently I never really did a lot of "configure make install" type builds for any of my boxes. As luck had it, there was an rpm available 99% of the time. Recently, I have run into a lot of scenarios where I needed a newer version of something and I had to go through a manual build process. Currently, have 3 systems that are pretty much identical. So lets say I want a newer version of wireshark or a gnome-applet that suse does not have yet in a repo. I would do the standard config make install procedure on all three boxes. I did notice that if the linux systems seem to be the same (ie. x86, i386) I can copy compiled binaries over to another box and I can use them there. Here is where my questions begin :) #1. Most of these apps have a lot of requirements when you build them, for example libpcap-devel or gnome-something-devel. I realized I do not need the "*devel*" rpms to be installed on the boxes i was compiling to. However, since there is no dependancy checking when I copy something over how can I know that the libpcap libraries actually exist? I assume my app will bomb out in the middle? #2. If I compile something on 586 openSuse will it work in 586 CentOS ? Is this just not a smart thing to do? Should you only copy between the same distro? #3. is there any way to keep track of the files installed? Or am I doing something findamentally wrong? Do I ./configure and make on one system and then do a make install on all of them? #4. How does one easily uninstall stuff that is installed by these methods? For how long will Novell provide patches and security updates for SuSE Linux 10.0? I have a server allready running 10.0 and have to decide if I want to stick to 10.0 or move to 10.2. [opensuse] Hardware Requirements for openSUSE 10.2 - file server

I need a small server in my household - for laptop/workstation backup and file sharing in my family across Mac, Windows and Linux using Samba. Would like graphical Yast2 for config, but do not need KDE desktop etc. I have an old Celeron 400 Mhz with 128 mb and a new 250GB disk. Am I right in thinking this will do with openSUSE 10.2? [opensuse] Want to turn on the ScrollLock light on the keyboard

I have a Zonet 4-port KVM switching a keyboard between three computers and a mouse between two of them. For one of the boxes, I leave the NumLock key on, for another I leave it off. For the third, I'd like to have the ScrollLock light on. (If I add a fourth, I'd want to have both the NumLock and ScrollLock lights on when it is selected as having the keyboard.) With this scheme, I should be able to look at the keyboard, and from the state of the NumLock and ScrollLock lights, be able to tell which computer is going to get the keystrokes. The problem is that pressing the ScrollLock key causes problems (for me) with the readline behavior in Konsole without lighting the ScrollLock light. [opensuse] UDEV and KDE

Hi, I know the UDEV mechanism, that allows to mount devices that we attached, ex. usb sticks, cameras, etc. But in KDE, what is the mechanism that makes to open Konqueror when I attached a usb stick? Hello list users: Could someone point me to a link where I can find detailed description on how to use kwinrule (KDE Control Center -> Desktop -> Window-specific settings)? I have no idea what 'window class', 'window role', 'window types', 'extra role' etc. are exactly. I would like to create a desktop icon that opens a window that shows the media storage devices. I want the window to open always at the same place with the same size and the same icon view without affecting the properties of any other window (eg konqueror). It depends what you need from your laptop. [opensuse] Blocking IP's using apache and iptables.

Hi All, I got this IP 75.126.21.163 spam my site, I try to block using apache and add this in my vhost.conf Options Indexes FollowSymLinks Order Allow,Deny Deny from 75.126.21.163 Allow from all But this spammer stil can get thru it. Why is this happen ? I'm using suse 10.0 and apache2-2.0.54-10.8 I also try to block using suse-firewall, but I dont know where should I add in susefirewall-custom.
