[opensuse] what is the different between proxy-squid and proxy-suite? 2nd... vnc gone n left tight vnc? what happen? now nx server come out? so confuse !! help

Hi there, yeah... i love new design for software management. Its really great and more easy to use. Great job . emm.. i am abit confuse now! what is the different in proxy-suite as compare with proxy-squid?? any idea ? i search in opensuse.org and i cant find any info on this ! maybe not fully updated in web yet. rite? second of all ... i usually use vnc for remote admin in suse 10.0 and planning upgrading it to opensuse 10.3 but when i search in software management, i can't find any vnc instead i get nxserver or tightvnc. [opensuse] sorting firewall utility

Hello, I'm on the way of configuring a hosted server and wonder why I should setup a firewall. AFAIK, a firewall have several goals: * secure an internal network, * NAT * redirect ports ...? none of these goals are relevant for a single host. [opensuse] switching from nfs mounts to cifs

Hello, I have several Linux workstations & servers that have their /home dir's mounted via nfs to a single server hosting all of the /home/users* dir's . What I'd like to do is change the mount from nfs to cifs and still maintain the user permissions to each of their own directories. However, when attempting to create a cifs mount to the smb share /home on the host server I get denied. What is the best method to accomplish getting a cifs mount to a smb share of /home and still maintain individual user permissions? Interestingly, windows boxes can see the /home share and individual users can get to their personal dir's. Why make the change? To prevent the annoying RPC errors on the client machines that occur when the host server is rebooted. I've noticed that doesn't occur with cifs mounts. [opensuse] bonding for dummies...

Ok, trying to figure out how to bond the network cards on SUSE into one. Man page for ifcfg-bonding says: "To setup a bonding interface you need a configuration file ifcfg-bond<X> with the usual network settings. But you must add additional variables" Ok, I need a configuration file. Where does it go? I'm reading the Linux Ethernet Bonding Driver HOWTO but it fails to tell you where to put the config file (how about specifying a path at least the first time a file is mentioned, or even every time, just to make life simple?) It also suggests that to determine if ones server has the capability to do this one use the grep ifenslave /bin/ifup command - which returns command not found but in fact there appears to be an ifenslave program in /sbin, and there is a file called ifup in there as well. oh well, I'm still coming to grips with learning grep. Hi! I'm trying to create a link to trace a kernel panic so that I can report a bug with the HP DL 140 server and XEN in opensuse 10.3 But I'm having trouble to set this up. Could anyone please provide me with a link to a good HOWTO? Google doesn't serve me well (probably becase I'm do bad queries). I'm running Linux in both ends. [opensuse] XGL with opensuse 10.2

Hi, I'm trying to use xgl with open suse 10.2. I have an ati grapgics card and have installed the ati drivers. I installed opensuse-xgl-settings and tried configuring with this application. But whenever I have turned it on and boot into KDE all my Windows don't have a frame to resize/close/minimize... Can anyone help how i can get it up and running including my current window decoration?I'm using KDE 3.5.7 by the way. [opensuse] 10.2: patch-sylpheed-claws-4511.xml not found; gums up YaST

I tried bringing up Online Update earlier this evening. The module window came up, and I got the usual series of popups ("Parsing files...", etc). Then I got an error popup. When I requested details, I got something like File /repodata/patch-sylpheed-claws-4511.xml not found on media: http://suse.cs.utah.edu/suse/update/10.2 If I tried to Skip or Abort, YaST would go a little further and then hang. There would be a popup "Reading translation: packages.en" at 100%, but no other activity. Closing the popup would make the Online Update window go away. I ran into similar problems with Software Management and Online Update Configuration. I thought it was a problem with the utah.edu mirror, so I searched for a way to remove it from my catalog list. For some reason, I forgot to try Installation Source. I did try removing it using "zypper service-delete http://suse.cs.utah.edu/suse/update/10.2", but that also complained about patch-sylpheed-claws-4511.xml and appeared to fail. I eventually tried clicking on "Add/Remove Update Sources..." from the openSUSE Updater (under KDE). That complained about patch-sylpheed-claws-4511.xml, too, but it then offered to remove that source from the source list, which I accepted. So I can now run Online Update and not have it hang, but I don't have a source configured for updates. I tried running Online Update Configuration, and it started to set me up with http://ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu/pub/suse/suse/update/10.2, but I eventually got an error about patch-sylpheed-claws-4511.xml again. So, two questions: First, is there something messed up with the 10.2 updates? Second, can YaST (or the relevant underlying management infrastructure) be fixed to handle this situation more gracefully? thanks, mike PS.
