Need help with USB.

My brother is in Lubbock and I'm here in NY. He has a new HP 1520n box which doesn't have a serial nor parallel port, just USB. Neither the Zoom external modem (internal is a winmodem) nor the printer (HP Laserjet that worked with SUSE, old release) are seen by 10.1. I can't get hands on with that box and can't get SUSE to see either. I'd certainly appreciate any ideas on how to force 10.1 to work with these devices! Removed program listed in Yast2 Sofwtare management

yast2 error: 2006-08-29 18:05:15 gpar2-0.3-2.i386 remove failed rpm output: postrm called with unknown argument `0' error: %postun(gpar2-0.3-2.i386) scriptlet failed, exit status 1 The program is listed as protected when I run yast2, however known of the files in the program are installed, so how do i remove this from installed packages list? installing a webcam

Hi all, I am trying to install an Hercules Deluxe webcam in a SLED 10 box. I've received some useful help from people in Novell fora, but I've not been able to set up the camera yet. dsmeg shows the following entries concerning it: usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2 usb 2-2: new device found, idVendor=05a9, idProduct=4519 usb 2-2: new device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0 usb 2-2: Product: USB Camera usb 2-2: Manufacturer: OmniVision Technologies, Inc. usb 2-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice I've been also advised to use usbview looking for details about the sensor, but after installing it this is all I can get: citlali:~ # usbview Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: Please, could you be so kind as to giving me any new key to try to get this device running with Suse? Installing SLED on Compaq EVO 400 C

Greetings, Context : No DVD drive and Cd rom install fails. I was going to dismantle the laptop, then partition and put the installtion source on a 5GB partition etc?) and it's not worth it as there are so many screws and I do not know what I will find under the cover. I am now after a network installation. I have a SLES 10 server and a Windows box server 2003 in production. Any thoughts? Cheers, Jimmy

Curiosity question regarding test colors in aterm/xterm

Folks, When I run >ls in a terminal, I notice that some of the file and directory labels carry a bright green background, while others don't. What is this supposed to signify? I thought it might be a quick visual clue to permissions -- green background = root, or something like that. But when I run an >l on the directory, a handful of user directories and files also carry the green background. This didn't crop up in previous versions of Suse, as I recall, so someone must have seen this as an improvement... Inquiring minds (perhaps with too much free time) want to know... DL DVD burner for Linux - FYI

A few days ago someone asked about a burner that was supported by linux. I must have deleted... thus the new thread, and just the FYI- I just looked at my new LaCie 300980 internal that I bought for a mac. Double Layer and Light Scribe. The box also says: Linux: Tested with K3b v.012.14 with Mandriva 2006, / Fedora Core 4 / SUSE 10 / Unbuntu 5.10 (Software not included) Again, I've not tested if it's true yet... but it's on my list of thing to do. (It should tell you something it being Sunday-Monday and that I'm just now opening up something I receive friday.) I have bought quite a few items from LaCie and have never had any issues with them. $80 @ CompUSA. (US) I think they have cheaper models... I also have a Mad Dog Megastore (not sure of model) external DL burner, but never got it to work, but I think it was a USB thing... not the drive. I didn't feel like yanking it out of the case to find out. Thanks, George
