[SLE] Byte code interpreter in 10.0?

I have read that the byte code interpreter has been turned on in SUSE 10.1. That is why the fonts look so good. But I can't verify this statement. If it's on in 10.1, has it also been turned on in 10.0? I can't find the answer in the SUSE list archives or on Google. Hiding/showing images quickly under Firefox.

Hi, Previously I was an Opera-fan and about one year ago I changed completely to Firefox 1.0.x. There is only one function I miss a lot, to have the easy possibility to turn off/on pictures on webpages. Under Opera there was a button to show all/cached/none images; in Firefox the only way I know to achieve the same goes via "Tools -> Options -> Web features -> Load images"... Is there please a way to place an icon on the interface of Firefox for this function, like it was in Opera, or alternatively is there e.g. an extension doing similar job?! Please note the most recent Firefox version I use is 1.0.8 ... Thanks so much, Pelibali

I did use third party ink so that's more than likely the problem. Over here n Europe you may as well go out and buy a new printer than buy genuine Epson ink refills. [SLE] Power down after bootup.

It seems that I have sucessfully installed SUSE. However, when I boot it after a while the boot process seems to succeed but then the computer powers off. In the manual there appears to be a different install process relating to power problems. Should I use the "Installation - ACPI disabled" option? Can I just do this inasmuch as SUSE is already installed? There is another option "Installation - Local APIC disabled" but no explanation of what this is. What do APCI and APIC stand for? The install also did not detect my wireless interface. I assume I can get that set up once SUSE boots up properly. Thanks! Doug

[SLE] Using an AC'97 modem

Hi Folks I have an internal modem in my laptop which I want to use as a fallback link when my main inet link goes down, I am on a sat feed due to my location. lspci id's it as : Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Modem Controller (rev 03) I have done searchs on google but see nothing that helps Sean -- Strange Things happen under the midnight sun When men and dogs go hunting for gold

Hi everyone, just upgraded the kernel-default package to version 2.6.16.20-1.1. Unfortunately the kernel-source package extracted the src into /usr/src/linux-2.6.16.20-20.1. This is a problem for several third party programs which try to determine the src path by the running kernel (name). Though I was able to hint the NVIDIA installer to the correct src path, it's not possible for me to install the VMware-Player. This is the output if vmware-config.pl: None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Player is suitable for your running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes] Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override. What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include] The directory of kernel headers (version 2.6.16.20-20.1-default) does not match your running kernel (version 2.6.16.20-1.1-default). Even if the module were to compile successfully, it would not load into the running kernel. --snip-- How do I fix this? Why is the kernel name not identical to the src path name? 10.1, hotplug, two NICs, one not initializing

Using YaST in SuSE 10.1 I configured the first NIC ( module 8139too, an add-on PCI card ) to use DHCP. Everything worked fine. Later I used YaST to configure the second NIC ( module 3c59x, onboard ) statically. Upon reboot, the static NIC never came up. As soon as I would load the module for the second nic manually via "modprobe 3c59x" it would be up and configured. I added the module for the second NIC to get loaded on boot to /etc/sysconfig/kernel via MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT="3c59x". That fixed the problem, both NICs now come up on boot. What's going on? Why did I have to do this for the second NIC and not the first? Is this the way it should be done or am I missing some other problem? Jason Joines =================================

[SLE] Modifying a script for changing system-time.

Hi, I have a perl-script to modify the system-time of my laptop. While I was connected to my university's broadband, I could run this via cron once per day. Now I have only dial-up at my home, so really can't determine whether I will be online, when this script runs. I would pretty much modify the script e.g. just to avoid errors mailed to me, that first it should check that we are online (dialed-in) or not and do setting the time only in the first case. My first idea was to ping e.g. www.google.com or a similar always-on machine, but I didn't manage to interpret it. Does anyone have a few-line home-baked idea for such a task and would share it with me?
