[SLE] Routing question

Hi, I have two external networks, say 192.168.0.x, on PC-A, and 192.168.1.x on PC-B. My DHCP-server gives a standard router pointing to PC-A. I need to access 192.168.1.x, so, on my own PC I (manually) do 'route add 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0 gw PCB'. This works. How do I set a similar route for all PC's on my internal network ? I first thought of adding a DHCP entry, but this seems not preferred. I read (on a ISC DCHP mailing list) that setting the route needs to be done elsewere, I concluded that this has to be done at the standard gateway. On my gateway there is a route identical to what I did on my own PC, there I can reach both external networks without problems although his standard gateway points to the external network (without that route added it didn't work). I hope this makes some sense, any help ? Hi, I am pretty new to linux. So please treat me as pretty novice, please forgive me about that. I have installed SuSE 10.1 on Intel D915GUX mother board with Pentuim4 EM64T processor. My monitor is Samtron 15inch model 56V. The X11 graphics is broken whenever I try to have a resolution higher than 800x600. I tried with different configuration but none did help. Hi all thinking of changing from MDV 2007 to Suse. as bugs are not getting fixed and again lack of backward compatability. questions:- MDV uses urpmi to load packages using rpm, but gets all the dependant packages as well, Whats the suse equivilant ? Penguin liberation front supplies some of the packages that cant be bundled with the MDV distro due to copyright etc reasons. Suse equivalent ??? is YAST still as horrible and obstructive as it was last time I looked at Suse (6.3) ? [SLE] REPOST: " DBUS Daemon is not running"

Some days ago the default kernel on 10.1 was updated to 2.6.16.21-0.13 and then, over the following couple of days, other bits got updated. Now, on every boot I get an error on the screen, when the Desktop displays, stating that, "DBUS Daemon is not running. Starting it will provide full funcitionality. /etc/init.d/dbus start ". Looking in Control Centre/System/System Services shows that this daemon *is* running (and it does not have an asterisk against the 'Yes'), and typing '/etc/init.d/dbus start' on a command line gives the message that dbus is already running. Which to believe: the error message or the Control Centre? And if the Control Centre, why the error message on boot and how to get rid of it? Anyone, please? While a brief bout of googling revealed how to add a local update mirror after install using rug, I could find no mention of how to specify a local mirror for updates during the initial install of the boxed set of SUSE-10.1. With a lot of computers to install on, this would be most useful, especially since doing an update during the install seems to be the cleanest way to fix 10.1's update bug. [SLE] ksmarttray doesn't reflect true status unless run as root

Hi all, I'm using smart to keep my system up-to-date. Has anyone else found a solution to the apparent need to run the tray app as root? If I click the ignore button, it runs as my user, from then on without bugging me for the root password every login. Unfortunately it doesn't detect new packages. I have to either login to a console as root and run the update from the CLI, or start the smart gui. In the end it makes the ksmarttray app useless or alternatively irritating by requiring root password every login. The only workaround I can think off at the moment is to run it suid, but is this really necessary? Listmates, Sandy in particular After adding: smtpd_client_restrictions = check_client_access cidr:/etc/postfix/client_check.cidr, reject_rbl_client relays.ordb.org, reject_rbl_client sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org, reject_rbl_client list.dsbl.org, reject_unknown_client I can't send mail from Postfix at home to postfix at work. The problem is the "reject_unknown_client" restriction which causes the server at work to reject the message. If I remove the restriction it works fine. [SLE] Security, ssh/vpn into a network

I ssh through a port I have forwarded from my firewall to my internal server. That server is my server with over a terabyte of space on it. Is there a better way to do this with out having a 3rd computer that needs to be on all the time? Thinking of some sort of chroot or vmware for ssh to run in on my server, or even my IPCop firewall. Or using some kidn of Web/SSL VPN . Anyone know of any good open source Web/SSL VPN? I usually only use ssh, web, and VNC remotely. [SLE] suggest me for upgrade options?

Hello. Sorry if OT, I think this perhaps should go to suse-admin list if there is one. The X terminal server has 8 users, load average is #uptime 3:08pm up 5:56, 14 users, load average: 3.65, 3.34, 2.73 (14 users because gnome-terminal users are counted too) CPU: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.40GHz => OS is SuSE 10.1 Harddisk is 40GB 7200RPM with 2MB cache, 1GB DDR memory is installed, averagely 758MB swap space is used. Current biggest problem is the "stun" effect, that is if one user use Firefox to load a big web page (example: a purely text web page of 500KB), all users consoles are frozen, that is, click have no effect, keyboard do not respond, everything looks as if the machine is dead, the X terminals come back alive again when the 500KB webpage is loaded. The purpose of upgrade is to remove stun effect (that's my way of calling it) and to speed up application launch to around 250% faster, because the two are where complaints from. Users complain their X terminal sometimes stun for 10 seconds, totally unexpected. Further launching jedit takes 20 to 40 seconds, they want it loaded in 10 seconds. What upgrade option may solve the two problems? Available options include: 1. add more memory, add memory to 2GB; 2. replace 7200RPM/2MB cache IDE harddisk to 10000RPM SATA harddisk with more cache; Replacement to SCSI is not possible because PCI slots are very limited and happen to have used up. The motherboard don't have native SCSI support. 3. replace the CPU to better one; 4. replace motherboard and CPU, possibly dual-cpu SMP mother board or dual-core CPU. This may evolve replacing memory bank too, as new motherboard uses DDR2 memory. 5. Buy a new machine. The key point is to remove 'stun' effect and launch application faster with minimum budget. Option 5 can be taken only if all 1-4 cannot solve the two problems. The users mostly do the following: 1. browse the web 2. word processing and prepare presentations 3. edit some files 4. chat What do you think is the most feasible approach? BTW, the reason for 'stun' effect I cannot understand. Why the machine 'stun'? When a user load a 500KB webpage, she is expecting to way a bit longer, she should wait for other users, she should get no more then 60% CPU resource and keep other people's console still usable but only slower. I am afraid the system resource is not assigned in a fair way. [SLE] Yast and Zen have different idea about updates?

Hi all, I have noticed a situation in which both Yast and Zen see the same packages, but give different indications about which is the most up-to-date. According to the Zen updater, there is an update available for kipi-plugins. (I know this update has been available for some time now, but I have not updated it yet). According to the Zen details, update version: 0.1.0rc1-19 installed version: 0.1.0_0.1-1.pm.1 However, I have been doing most of my updates through Yast. When I look at this package in Yast Online Update, I see the following versions are available 0.1.0rc1-19 (from the DVD) 0.1.0_0.1-1.pm.1 (from Packman) <-- Installed version According to Yast however, there is no update available. The installed version is the most up-to-date. So I have two questions... 1) Which of these is correct? 2) Is this a bug in either Zen or Yast, or is this a problem specific to the kipi-plugins package. For anyone interested (not a large number I am quite sure), I have included some additional information below which, while possibly related, doesn't really change any issues raised above. ---------------- In Yast Online Update, under Change log for kipi-plugins-0.1.0_0.1-1.pm.1 the first listing is an update to 0.1.0-rc1 in Nov 2005 which seems to indicate that 0.1.0_0.1-1.pm.1 supercedes 0.1.0-rc1. However, according to <http://extragear.kde.org/apps/kipi/> "The most stable KipiPlugins tarball is version 0.1.0-rc2" So this would seem to indicate that Zen got this right in this situation (see below). As a final note, there is another version 0.1.0rc2-11.4 from <http://software.opensuse.org/download/KDE:/Backports/SUSE_Linux_10.1/i586/> which also shows up under Yast but not under Zen because that repository does not seem to be listed when I run "rug sl". I didn't include this in the above since that behavior didn't change if I remove this repository from Yast. I currently have an application that runs Oracle under one SuSE server and Java in-house code in another SuSE server. I was wondering if anybody can suggest a cluster solution so I can have my Java code duplicated in two+ SuSE servers. How about Oracle, can I cluster Oracle to run on two+ servers? I'm getting the following error when trying to add the KDE repository in SUSE 10.1. This same URL worked fine earlier yesterday but quit sometime last night. # rug sa -t zypp http://software.opensuse.org/download/KDE:/KDE3/SUSE_Linux_10.1/ KDE Adding zypp service... 0% ERROR: Could not add 'http://software.opensuse.org/download/KDE:/KDE3/SUSE_Linux_10.1/': Failed to parse XML metadata: Unsigned file '/repodata/repomd.xml (http://software.opensuse.org/download/KDE:/KDE3/SUSE_Linux_10.1/)' I've tried this with the generic software.opesuse.org and at ftp-1.gwdg.de so I'm guessing its an error that is being propagated to other mirrors.?.? Or have I missed the magic of adding repo signatures in rug/zmd/yast/smart/apt? Not sure how to report this to someone that can fix it. Should I bugzila this or what? Heya, since SUSE Linux 10.1, bash always reprints the prompt. SUSE is prone to the same issues (as are all OSs in my experience). Generally speaking, you can get away with minor upgrades.. 10.0 to 10.1 for example, but it's hit and miss. Successful for some and a disaster for others. I usually format / with each new release, and format /home with each major release (eg from 9.x to 10.x) That has worked fairly well..... as long as I haven't gone too crazy with bleeding edge apps :-) BTW, this list has a quirk in that if you simply reply, you do not reply to the list.. instead you send an offlist private email... in case you wonder why.. well it's been hashed and flogged to death here.. and the end of it is... that's the way this list is managed (reasons given include the infinte loop situation where people have vacation responders enabled). So the solution is to either do a reply all and remove the private email address, or use a mail client that is mailing list friendly (eg KMail). Hi All, I just setup a webserver with ftp support. Right now i can from localhost, i can connect and list directory using FTP. Then when i try to connect from remote site with FTP, i can go thru, but i can't list directory using 'ls'. It always show this : ftp> ls 229 Entering Extended Passive Mode (|||15227|) and got no response whatsoever..
