[SLE] installation fails or instable system - SL 9.3 / SL 10.0-OSS / SL 10.1 (english + german text)

(german text below) architecture: x86 applies to: SuSE Linux 9.3 Professional, SuSE Linux 10.0 OSS, openSuSE SuSE Linux 10.1 hwinfo: http://www.swabian.net/hwinfo Hallo, sorry for my bad English at first. After about 30 tries of installation (different configuration of hardware/bios/installation-settings), i didn't get a stable system or in most cases the installation failed. On this Computer SuSE Linux 10.0 and previous distributions worked fine before, but i wanted to upgrade to SL 10.1. After the backup of my data, i burned the net-boot-image (SUSE-Linux-10.1-GM-i386-mini.iso) onto cd to do an internet installation. The first 5 tries leaded to a crash of YaST during the configuration part after installing the packets / before the reboot - following message shown: /usr/lib/YaST2/startup/YaST2.call: Line 306: 3309 segmentation fault (core dumped) $OPTFBITERM y2base "$Y2_MODULE_NAME" $Y2_MODE_FLAGS $Y2_MODULE_ARGS $Y2_MODE $Y2_UI_ARGS on syslog: cannot open file us.map.gz.map I could avoid this, as i told my BIOS to initiate my AGP graphics card first. But the installation also failed. Now these configuration steps have all been made, but after the reboot, a complete system hangup (even num-lock didn't work, no syslog entry) occured in different steps of configuration, i.e. before setting up the root-password or network setup. Sometimes error messages like "cannot write to ZYBB device" were shown. I thought that could be caused by the new zmd-stuff (i dislike at SL 10.1!). After not having luck with the installation of SL 10.1, i wanted to install 10.0 again, therefor i installed SL 9.3 in minimum configuration again to download and burn the 10.0 cds. The installation of SL 9.3 worked fine, but the system wasn't very stable, some actions of hardware configuration in YaST lead to a complete hangup without a syslog entry. But the download and cd-burning worked. So I installed SL 10.0 with minimum configuration/text-mode. The installation worked glad. But after that i had an instable system too. some actions in YaST lead to such a hangup. The easiest way to cause that hangup is running BOINC (http://boinc.berkeley.edu) in the step "running CPU benchmarks" this hangup occurs. i can exclude following sources of error: installation media (SL-10.1: internet, DVD-iso (contents in path on /dev/hdb2); SL-10.0-OSS: CDs; SL-9.3: CDs) hardware: videocards, monitors, soundchip, firewire, isdn-card, periphery (modems, printers), USB i ran the memory-check of the SL-10.1 cd about 20 hours, no errors. i don't know what i can do... info: the repair system of the installation cd crashes, when i run it i would be glad if you could help me Paul Neuwirth ---- German text (less detailed) Architektur: x86 betrifft: SuSE Linux 9.3 Professional, SuSE Linux 10.0 OSS, openSuSE SuSE Linux 10.1 hwinfo: http://www.swabian.net/hwinfo Hallo, nach ueber 30 Installationsversuchen (unterschiedliche Hardware/BIOS/Installations-konfigurationen) habe ich kein stabiles System erhalten, bzw. in den meisten Faellen schlug bereits die Installation fehl. Ich habe auf diesem Rechner bereits erfolgreich einige Linux-Distribtuionen, zuletzt SuSE 10.0, betrieben. Ich wollte kuerzlich auf SL 10.1 updaten, ich sicherte meine Daten brannte mir die Installations-CD ohne Quellen (für Netzwerkinstallation). Bei ca. 5 Installationen kam ich auf das Ergebniss, dass bei der Konfiguration nach dem Installieren der Pakete (vor reboot) YaST crashte, mit folgender Meldung: Zitat: /usr/lib/YaST2/startup/YaST2.call: Line 306: 3309 segmentation fault (core dumped) $OPTFBITERM y2base "$Y2_MODULE_NAME" $Y2_MODE_FLAGS $Y2_MODULE_ARGS $Y2_MODE $Y2_UI_ARGS syslog: cannot open file us.map.gz.map dieses Problem liess sich vermeiden indem ich im BIOS auswaehlte, dass die AGP Grafikkarte zuerst angesprochen werden sollte. Mit dieser Konfiguration versuchte ich es erneut, scheiterte aber dennoch. YaST haengte sich bei der Installation nach dem reboot (Konfiguration) auf, d.h. das komplette System stand still, noch nicht einmal die taste num lock funktionierte... es erfolgte kein Eintrag im syslog. Bei der minimalen Installation im Textmodus kam ich manchmal weiter, bis zum abschluss der Installation/Konfiguration, jedoch erhielt ich ein instabiles System, bei bestimmten Vorgaengen in YaST haengte sich der PC auf. Teilweise erhielt ich noch waehrend der Installation Fehler: "cannot write to ZYBB device", o.ae. also irgendwas mit dem neuem zmd packetmanager(?). Es stellte sich dann heraus, dass die rpm-datenbank beschaedigt war. Bei den Installationen konnte ich folgende Fehlerquellen ausschliessen: Installationsmedien (SL-10.1: Internet, DVD (Imageinhalt in Verzeichnis auf /dev/hdb2); SL-10.0-OSS: CDs; SL-9.3: CDs) Grafikkarten, Monitore, Soundchip, Firewire, ISDN-Karte, Peripherie (Modem, Drucker), USB ich versuchte es mit allen denkbaren Hardwarekonfigurationen und BIOS-Einstellungen. Zum ausschliessen von Fehlern im RAM, fuehrte ich den memorytest der SUSE-10.1-CD über 20 Stunden lang aus, ohne dass ein Fehler erkannt wurde. Nachdem alle Installation von 10.1 fehlschlugen, entschloss ich mich es mit 10.0 zu probieren, welches zuvor bereits lief. hierzu installierte ich zunächst SL-9.3 mit textmodus, lud mir die images der 10.0-cds runter und brannte sie. Allerdings merkte ich schon, dass auch SL-9.3 nicht stabil lief. Mittels "BOINC" (http://boinc.berkeley.edu/) brachte ich den PC auch zu einem system hang, etwa 30 sekunden nach der BOINC-Meldung "running CPU benchmarks". kein syslog eintrag. trotzdem wollte ich mein Gluek probieren, und installierte SL-10.0-OSS im Textmodus. I get that log entry many times on my mailserver (Suse 10.1, Courier with Openldap) authdaemond: nss_ldap: reconnected to LDAP server ldap: Exactly each time I click on an Imap folder in the mailclient. [SLE] Any way to force x586 over x86_64 during installation?

Hello all, I got a new processor (Pentium 4, 3.0 Ghz , Hyper-Threading bla bla, 64-bit compatible) and I had to install SUSE 10 again so... This is my first time dealing with x86_64 packages at all! I'm having a hard-time with some applications (that used to work better on their 32-bit version). For example, mplayer won't play wmv9 videos because the codec's are 32-bit.... In order to install MPlayer 32-bit version I have to uninstall more than 8 packages (dependencies for mplayer as well for KDE, and other important apps). I'd rather install SUSE 10 (using all 32-bit packages). Is that possible? I noticed that when I go to YAST I can select a package and then I'll go to the version tab and I can choose the version I want (32 vs 64). I hope there's a nicer way during installation. Linuxant does not support PCI model anymore. Hello I have been seeing this subject fly around but I have not seen any concrete answers. I have tried power management trick along with a few others. [SLE] it's weird: My ndiswrapper can be loaded but ping does not work

Hi friends, I use OpenSuSE 10.1 , LinkSys WMP54G PCI (Wireless-G PCI Adapter) and LinkSys Wireless-G ADSL Gateway (IP: 192.168.1.1). Because I can't find the Linux device driver for my WMP54G, I use ndiswrapper. My ndiswrapper has been installed successfully. and I did : 1. copied the its windows device driver into "/root" ( Rt61.INF , rt61.cat , rt61.sys ) 2. ndiswrapper -i /root/Rt61.INF 3. ndiswrapper -l driver present, hardware present 4. modprobe ndiswrapper 5. and finally configure the wlan0 with yast2 (network device) as follows: - I chosed "wireless" as device type - Configuration name "0" it results wlan0 - Hardware configuration name: static-0 - Module name : ndiswrapper - IRQ : I left it blank - Operating mode : managed - network name (SSID) : linksys - Encryption : Open / disabled - IP : 192.168.1.140 / 255.255.255.0 - gateway : 192.168.1.1 My KNetwork-Manager says that my Linksys WMP54G PCI is connected to 'linksys' and active. but if I do: "ping 192.168.1.1" than I get negative result. And of course I can not go to internet with my WLAN Adapter Card. the SuSEfirewall2 is stopped. It's weird for me. Please help me. Tell me where my mistake. [SLE] PDF form editing

Hi, I am interested in inserting text into the text blocks on a PDF application form ie entering data into those little square blocks they give to write your details into. Is there a way to convert a PDF document to a human readable format, add the required text and then re-PDF the form? I do not have a printer and therefore would need to save the document to a USB stick, visit a friend's printer and print the necessary form, fill it in and then fax it. It would be SO much easier if I could edit the relevant fields, insert an image of my signature, re PDF the document, and then email it. [opensuse] opensuse buttons/banners GIF vs. PNG

Some of the buttons/banners on http://en.opensuse.org/Buttons are in GIF format. Is there a special reason for this? Why not PNG? I thought that according to the discussions on this list some time ago we wanted to avoid GIF files... [SLE] New laptop -- which version?

I've just bought an hp Pavilion dv5234us laptop. I need to keep the installed Win XP for professional reasons, but I want to use suse as the main system. The laptop will be used for electronics CAD, (along with this desktop), documentation, and presentation at client sites. The laptop has an Intel Core Duo processor -- two Pentium cores on the same chip. For this I should install the 32-bit smp kernel, right? I have the impression that laptops need special treatment when installing systems and software.
