I have seen recent references to SuSE on the powerPC but have searched in vain on Novell and opensuse for a version. How to upgrade mysqld to >= 5.0 in SuSE 9.2 prof ? How to make this transition safe? (backup) I use for mysql a different machine, than for www, .... but use also on www a local version of mysql for some tasks. After KDE Patches last night from YOU no desktop

All, Last night there was some KDE security patches pushed down via YOU on SuSe10. After rebooting my machine I am able to login but on the desktop there is no task bar and my original desktop and everything is gone and I can't do anything. I was wondering if there is a way to see what the last patches that were loaded by YOU via command line and to back those out. SuSe 10 has been great to me and allowed me to switch totally from Windows and I have been enjoying it. With all the work I put in I would hate to have to reload this machine for this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Question about 'net connection/sharing

Hi gang, My girlfriend recently got satellite internet. Her daughter of course needs to use it also (as will I soon). I thought a router would be the thing to use for all 3 of us to hook into to use the 'net, but a friend here said a hub/switch will be just fine. Which is better? Which would allow all 3 of us to be 'online' at the same time the best (meaning, which/what would try to even out the bandwidth we use if all 3 of us were online at one time?)? Is the switch good enough? It seems to be working well enough for the two of them as it is, but I'm just curious if there's something that might be any better. libgtk error after upgrading from gnome supplementary

problem with NFS? OR problem with firewall?

Hi, I've got a problem with NFS that appears to only affect AMD64 machines, i.e. those running 64 bit linux. Everytime these boxes boot up and try to mount NFS drives from our SLES9 server, they are presented with "Server reports TCP unavailable, reverting to UDP". Whilst on other occasions I see a message saying that "NFSv3 is not available". So the first question: is this a problem with configuration of the firewall on the server? Does it matter whether NFS uses TCP or UDP? (I'm no networking expert) On booting up, the 64 bit clients present you with the login page, but users (whose home dirs are on the NFS mounted drives) are unable to login, because the NFS mount commands have been backgrounded. I either have to leave the machine for 10 minutes, before trying to login, or log in as root and issue the command (mount -vat nfs). Second question: why is the initial connection to the server so slow. The next problem is that whenever I try to copy a large file from the NFS mounted home dir to a local disk, the performance is abysmal. I.e. it took 5 minutes to copy a 100Mb file. Last question: what could be affecting the performance of NFS to make it practically unusable on 64 bit linux, but absolutely fine on 32 bit machines. How to move installation to another disk (inside same computer)?

Hello! I have 10.0 installed on a large (but old) disk. Now I have another same sized disk and a (old) smaller disk as well. What I'd like to do is to move the installation from current drive to the smaller drive and then set up the 2 large drives with mirroring (for data). The guestion is, how can I move everything from one disk to another when they are of different sizes? (Equivalent of what Norton Ghost does I guess.) I think dd only works with same sized disks, right? I'm thinking that I should create partitions on the new smaller drive. Boot with SuSE-live (or knoppix) and then as root, just "cp *" from old partitions to the new ones. And then physically move the disks around inside the computer. But I do not think that the new disk would boot. So I still need to... what, boot the SUSE installation and let that try to fix the installation, or? There must be a easier way... -- HG.
