Suse 9.3 w/NFS & NIS Client

Have Suse 9.3 on laptop running NFS & NIS Clients and a SuSE 9.3 server running NFS & NIS Servers. It has a strange problem after booting up that I would like a solution for. When I open Konqueror, the directory for the server shared directory does not show up. If I close Konqueror, open the terminal, cd to root director and do an ls, the directory is there. I then Open Konqueror again, and the directory is there and can see the files on the server. What is causing this that I have to open a terminal window and do a ls in order to get Konqueror to see it? Art

Evolution 1.4.6 in Suse 9.1 memory hog?

MIDI not working

Hi all, Most of my sound system is working great, but it seems that I don't have a running MIDI system. I'm looking for MIDI to generate audio output through my sound card, I'm not looking to drive external MIDI this way (at least not right now). I've tried to set all the volume levels I can find to max, but I might have missed something. How do I start debugging this? keyboard in gnome

It seems lately that more often than not, my key board is not available under Gnome (9.3 install). I'll go into evolution, read and press the Delete key to see that the mail is not deleted, trying to use Yast doesn't work as I cannot input the root password. Going back to the log in screen I can use the key-board accelerator keys to change session type and log in under KDE with keyboard. Seeing as KDE is still a dog on my system, and Gnome has acceptable speed, I'd prefer to use Gnome. Any ideas as to what the problem is, and how to fix it?

problem with TV module

i can't configure my FlyVideo Lifetec tv card (card no.54) and tuner (no.5) on my SuSE 9.3 pro box. YaST gives up trying to scan channels, saying (may wrap): sh: "card":"54", "tuner":"5": syntax error: operand expected (error token is ""card":"54", "tuner":"5"") hoping that YaST had written the correct config lines in the correct places and was merely failing to scan, i tried 'scantv' and 'scantv4', but no go. no channels are detected. same with xawtv and xawtv4. the same card is working beautifully under winxp. using a GPL-ed driver and a player called DScaler, i was able to generate and use a config file and channel list under windows, but i don't know how to convert it to the xawtv format, or whether it'll be of any use even. on a previous mandrake 9.1 box, too, i was able to get it working by adding these lines to /etc/modules.conf: ================================== alias char-major-89 i2c-dev options i2c-core i2c_debug=1 options i2c-algo-bit bit_test=1 alias char-major-81 bttv options bttv card=54 fieldnr=1 gbuffers=2 options tuner debug=1 type=5 pal=b ================================== however, adding those to /etc/modprobe.conf.local on SuSE generates error messages from modprobe. i am using the correct video norm (pal) and input type (television), and the appropriate frequency table (europe-west), so those aren't the problem. does anyone have useful ideas? - t. -- cogito, ergo es.

IP network camera recommendations please

I'm looking for an good value (read: it can be a moderately expensive up to about £400 but must provide good 'bang for my buck') network wireless ip camera that I can set up and use with SuSE Linux 9.3/FireFox. There are a couple of cameras I've found that appeal to my needs, including: - D-Link DCS-5300G - Panasonic BL-C30 - Intellinet Wireless IP Network Camera but all apart from the last one only seem to support Internet Explorer only web management. The biggest worry is support for web browser management under Linux. Most of these cameras require IE as they use ActiveX controls, but the intellinet one can utilise JAVA, and says it specifically supports Linux based browsers. OTher features I'm looking for are e-mail notification, ftp upload of images/video and motion detection to trigger recording. Pan/tilt/zoom would be a good bonus. I need ftp upload because I'll be using this to monitor the inside of my flat, specifically the front door and hallway, and I figure if someone does break in they're going to take my computer kit and rip the camera off the ceiling (and probably take that too) which would make saving the images to itself or similar useless (I can upload to a friends ftp site). Has anyone purchased any of this type of camera, and have an opinion? Reviews and forums are sparse, especially regarding Linux support. Cheers, SteveC

I did it... but for example I don't understand meaning of all symbolic links in /etc/alternatives My suggestions are: 1. implement some switch JVMs script into distro or 2. write some documentation which symbolic links are necessary to change.
