Why won't 9.3 see my DVD-RAM drive

Dear All I have just completed an ftp install of 9.3 x86_64 with a full YOU update. Hello All, Sorry to interrupt you. I have been facing a wierd problem on same kernel version (2.6.5-7.97.smp) but running on different machines 32-bit and 64-bit (which can run 32-bit also). I found that every process running in this kernel version has a virtual address mapping in /proc/<pid>/maps file as follows <--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------> ffffe000-ffff000 ---p 00000000 00:00 0 <--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------> You can find this vaddr mapping at end of maps file. on a 64-bit(uname --all == 'Linux host 2.6.5-7.97.smp #1 <time stamp> x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux) machine which is running the same kernel, I try to write the contents of the virtual address on to file with (r = write(fd,0xffffe000,4096) ). The write on this machine is successful. But if I try to write the same segment on 32-bit machine (uname --all == Linux host 2.6.5-7.97-smp #1 <timestamp> i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux). The write on this 32-bit machine fails with EFAULT(14), but if memcpy to a buffer from this virtual address seems to work fine i.e if I do 'memcpy(buf1,0xffffe000,4096)' it write perfectly the contents of this virtual address segment into the buf1. I had a hard time googling about this I could'nt find any information on why this happens. May be some mm hackers may share some of their thoughts. Really appreciate your inputs on this. (I though that since write is a syscall the issue might be with the kernel the thus skipping the glibc details)

Clipboard without KDE

Hi all I'm setting up an old laptop. It doesn't really have the umph to handle KDE or Gnome, and because it's a laptop I don't really want a mouse based environment anyway. So, I installed Ion3, which I've used before and very nice it is too, but the only thing I can't get to work with it is some sort of clipboard for cutting and pasting between applications. Anyone have any ideas on how to cut and paste between two terminal sessions? Ion3 does run an X-server, so it should have all the facilities of X, which *should* include a clipboard, but I can't get it to work. On a semi-related note, is it possible to have a clipboard without X? For instance, between two virtual terminals on boot-up (Alt-F1, Alt-F2 for instance)? TIA. jalal

SuSE 9.3, SSH broken?

Extremelly annoying problem, ssh connections fail with this error: Received disconnect from 140.xxx.xxx.xxx: 2: bind: Permission denied I get this error connecting to a dozen machines or so. Anyone knows if kdepim3-kpilot 3.4.1-3 works fine? The first days of KDE 3.4.1 I've upgraded KDE 3.4.0 to 3.4.1 except kpilot because seems that have a problem with the memos sync: «Some critical bugs in KPilot have been found: The memofile conduit will eat all previously synced memos; in addition, category names will be broken because the last character of each category name is removed. [SLE] : To SuSE people who builds the "kernel of the day"

Hello, I use to build once a week the kotd for SuSE 9.3. I have never problems with the SL93-BRANCH. But with the "i386" branch, the last kernel I was able to run is dated June the 20th. With newer kernels my USB hardware and Network card are not detected. I've upgraded mkinitrd, udev and hwinfo as told in the read.me file. Can you try to tell me what I've forgotten or where I'm wrong ? If interested I've modified the bootsplash patch which works now with the "i386" branch. Thanks in advance for reply. Michel

Search text box will not take focus in YaST:Install and Remove Software

When running Yast "Install and Remote Software" the search text box will not take focus. So, I cannot type anything into the search field. I have tried right clicking, double clicking and so on, but it will not take focus.

Mapping Mouse Buttons

Hey list, I'd like to map mouse button combinations to commands/scripts. Does anyone know of a way to do something similar to xbindkeys but for the mouse? Reason: I just installed 3ddesktop [1] and would rather not have to hit the keyboard in order to activate it. Suse 9.3 disappearing Nics

I am rebuilding an old redhat 7.1 firewall box the hard drive failed. All other hardware remained the same. Anyway setup 9.3 fully patched no problems. Go to setup the second nic card and problems start. Everything seems to have worked both card installed and configured. However if I reboot the system both nics drop. They still show up is yast as being configured. "ifup eth0" and "ifup eth1" both say ERROR: Interface eth0 is not available. If I do a cold boot they both come up correctly. I figured it had to be something with plug-n-play in the bios. I have tried both pnp enabled os and no pnp enabled os same results. What else can cause this. I am so confused.
