Bad blocks on a ReiserFS volume. How to retrieve files?

I have a large hard-disk (120 GB) on which some blocks went bad. Now, it cannot be mounted. Attached is what debugreiserfs says. What can I do; I'm newbie to reiserfs architecture. I thought that ReiserFS keeps copies of the superblock or something, like ext2/3 does. reiserfsck says "error occured looks like hardware problem. bread cannot read block 13271040". That's the actual number it displays. PS I have asked the same question on the reiserfs-list, but it's extremely low traffic. Maybe someone here knows more. Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. Creating a new user for a deamon

Mount Windows NT(NTFS) drive as drive Z: for all users

Adding fonts?

Hi all, Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? print from K-Mail run together

I don't remember seeing this problem on the list. KMail print on screen is clear and most letters are separated. When I print out a mail, some letters, particularly the "t", the "si" and the "sk" combinations are scrunched together with adjoining letters. I am printing to an HP 2200D laserjet. The typeface on screen (and on paper) is a sans-serif font. Even on screen, it is slightly scrunched in spots. "ri" and "ti" and "tt" and "th" are too close together. Suggestions? TNX--doug

Can't open Transcode tarball or it doesn't exist

Hi Folks, I have been trying to get a tarball of transcode to compile on my SUSE 9.2 system. Every pkg I have d/l'd from the sites listed on the Transcode Wiki page: http://www.transcoding.org/cgi-bin/transcode are unopenable. Every one, including the beta versions. Have I made one of those embarrassing newby errors? Konqi Filemgr says : "The file does not exist" even tho it lists it. Is there a location for a transcode I can open and compile? PeterB p.s. screen, mouse, kb lockup

While attempting to stop a video playing on Macro Media Flash Player 7, I managed to lock out everything. I could not move the mouse cursor, the arrow keys and the rest of the kb didn't work, ctl-alt-del did nothing. None of the function keys did anything. (The video was something downloaded from the 'net via Firefox.) I wound up pulling the big switch, as us hams like to say. Is there anything else I could have done? I'm trying to put Linux to practical use, and this is the first time I've seen 10.0 crash, so it's good, but not fool-proof. (If something can be broken, this fool will break it!)

External disk choice

I have a 4-year old DELL desktop with a heavy CRT monitor that I'm going to give away soon . I also have a 2 month old laptop. Both computers run Linux/SuSE. I would like to buy an external disk to save most of my s/w development now residing on my old desktop. But I would like to be able to use it also with my laptop. Both computers have some USB ports so I daresay an external USB disk would be fine .. I'd appreciate some suggestion about a USB reliable, large capacity but portable, external disk or any alternative solution. Thank you in advance. Maura

SCSI RAID recovery

I have a fileserver running SuSE 8.0 with 2 IDE Drives and a SCSI RAID (RAID5). The system boots up to one of the IDE drives, and the SCSI RAID drive runs as a mounted filesystem (/dev/md0). (all filesystems are REISERFS). Problem: The SCSI RAID drive has crashed (won't boot up), and I need to recover it (repair it, through some utility). Further: The software does not seem to want to mount the disks, even though the SCSI BIOS (Adaptec) recognizes the disks, and they are listed as OPTIMAL. I tried to repair the disk(s) (with reiserfsck), but it produced an error message: reiserfs_open: bread failed reading block 2 reiserfs_open: bread failed reading block 16 reiserfs_open: neither new nor old reiserfs form found on /dev/md0 The literature suggested that this error message is hardware related (either a disk is physically damaged, or maybe the RAID isn't recognized), but again, the disks are recognized (and therefore, so is the SCSI Card). I tried to boot up with SuSE CD 1 in Recovery mode, but not sure what to do there (i.e., after the root prompt - just run reiserfsck?). Literature suggests there are plenty of tools to handle disk recovery, and especially RAID support, I can't find reference to them anywhere. The installation of the RAID was trivial (using the YAST2 partitioning GUI window on startup), and yet recovery seems to be a mystery. This can't be right. Does anyone know where there are "decent" and "usable" recovery tools? OR ... does anyone know what "specifically" to do in this case? Can I re-partition without formatting, and recover the existing data? Any help is appreciated - I'm sure I'm missing something "obvious", but can't find "obviously" what to do in the literature, docs, etc. Thank you. Linux Magazine (Linux Pro in the US) has a 4 page review of the 9.3 release in the June 2005 issue, pgs 44-47. "Novell's Suse Linux 9.3 is a feature-rich, and robust Linux distribution. At first glance, the new version does not seem much changed from 9.2, but a lot of work has gone on under the hood. The distribution is definitely good for new users. If you already have Suse Linux 9.x or a similarly recent system, the update is only worth the effort if you are unhappy with your current setup. New machine problems, looking for culprits

A new AMD64 bit machine, new SUSE 9.3, should be heaven. Machine hangs after a few minutes of use, but I can't tell why. I hope someone recognizes a problem part so I can address it. Parts: Motherboard: Asus A8V-E includes: Disk controller: VIA SATA and IDE drives Network: Marvell Yukon 88E8053 PCI-E gigabit sound, usb, firewire on board CPU: AMD Athlon64 XP3500+ Graphics: Gigabyte PCI-Express 6600GT (NX66T128D) Attempts: WinXP: Embarassingly stable. SuSE9.3 (64bit) crashes Fedora Core 4 64-bit crashes Ubantu64 crashes DamnSmallLinux (embedded under XP with QEMU) stable!!! Obviously SuSE is my choice. I keep trying online update, hoping that the system will stay up long enough to complete and that a fix is coming. Any thoughts? Paul Alfille

help for sight impaired people

Some weeks ago I inquired here about assistance for those who have difficulty seeing, as I am one, at present. I am effectively blind in the left eye and have cataract in the right. Some of this may be ameliorated in the future, some will probably not be. Nothing came back at all. The font in K-Mail out-going is about 8 point on my 17" screen, as is the font on the message names for the incoming mail. I have not been able to change this, altho the actual incoming message font I was successful in changing. I do not have access to my Windows machine at present, due to mechanical failure, and this is the only way I have to communicate. Is there no way to make SuSE Linux friendly to optically-challenged users? Please, someone, reply. --doug

PC running (SuSE 8.2 Pro / WinME) bootloader lilo -> grub

Hi List, I have belatedly made the change from lilo to grub carefully converting my lilo config to grub'ese. It seems to work as expected. However, I have a couple of questions which I cannot track down in any off-line source (man, info, howto's etc.) and I am not able to trawl google or list archive with a time-limited unmetered dial-up connection at present. 1. In lilo I always used the boot-floppy option so as not to upset WinME. How do I do something similar in grub? 2. When the bootloader menu appeared in lilo I could interactively overide the default runlevel (ie: boot to runlevel 3 not 5) when necessary. How is this achieved in the grub menu? I will accept a URL to the appropriate list archive entry or web page. NTP set up in YAST is loosing time

Hi, I have used NTP in previous SUSE 9.X, but on 9.3 I used YAST to set up NTP. YASTs dialog says that it will sync to a time server at bootup. In the past I am sure that the local PC was re-sync'd quite often. I rarely ever saw a difference of more than a second between my "Atomic" wall clock or watch. But now I see the PCs time getting more and more 'off' the longer it has been booted. This is irritating and non-intuitive. The systems should stay in sync with the 'official' time servers. One should NOT have to re-boot just to get the clock back in sync. Is the a way to tell the system to regularly 'sync up'? Has anyone out there found a way to keep a 9.3 system time accurate? PeterB

What are people using for anti-virus software? I've got BitDefender running on my machine, but I'd like to find something zero-cost that has a nice GUI so that when I set up boxes for friends and family, they can use it. Regularly (and automatically) updated virus definitions are a must, here. Dave

icewm in SuSE 9.3

I've installed icewm from yast but I cannot seem to access it. Does anyone know how to change the display from kde to icewm? There doesn't seem to be any options in the login screen or the yast sysconfig editor that lists it as a choice for selection. Thanks Eddie

Overwhelming number of emails

Hi I really do not like to complain, but is there a way I can reduce the number of seeminly repeating email. Or can I just receive an email that has the problem then a solution instead of every kind of unsolicited email. Not knowing where the conversation started makes it hard to understand. My next option was to unscribe, which I really do not want to do. I am still using windows because I do not know how to setup my SuSE 9.1 to connect to the internet. I need a step by guide please. I attempted with my motoroal internal modem but when prompted to set up my mail accounts I got confused. I have started reading unix books with the hope to understanding better. Which programming language does Linux use for creating applications? I noticed that the openCD has C and C++ header files, a compiler for C and C++. remote X vrs VNC

While I realize VNC can be used on multiple os's, I saw a snip of an article that POed me. It claimed that you couldn't graphically remotely administer a Linux machine before VNC. I assume it was a newbie (as am I), but one who didn't know about X, or Webmin, and came from a PC Anywhere background. I have used VNC at my brothers, but haven't messed with x remotely; what are the benefits/limitations of either, relating to a Linux installation. Has anyone messed with X remotely going either way from a X.org machine to Xfree or vice versa. Trying to learn from others mistakes before I fiddle TIA Randal
