Older motherboard dilemma

It took me only seconds after I installed SUSE Linux to see that my desktop machine is too slow to support it properly with KDE. This is a Supermicro P6SBA motherboard with a 350MHz CPU. It was, of course, blazingly fast when I bought it, but that was then, while this is now. A review of suitable MB/CPU combinations operating at speeds that I hear people talk about shows me that they would make an unsupportble dent in my finances. But I might be able to swing a faster CPU for the existing MB. The fastest CPU available for this motherboard runs at 800MHz. I don't think I have a problem with the speed at which applications run. What is on my mind is the responsiveness of the desktop: it takes forever for windows to even show up on the screen. Solution: [SLE] Search text box will not take focus in YaST:Install and Remove Software

Ok, I found a 'fix' to this. http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2005-Jul/2394.html What happens is the focus is retained by the left-nav bar when the Install and Remove screen appears. Clicking in the textbox does not set focus. So, what I do is tab until it reaches the text box ( takes a few tabs) Then it works ok. Sounds like Suse has a bug in their gtk programing (if that's what Yast uses).

How do i create a circle in GIMP?

Sounds basic, doesn't it? I need to know how to create both a filled and outlined circle and square, with different border thickness' like you can do easily with mspaint. I know it's a great program but this function which I'd consider basic, which I can't find, is driving me nuts! SteveC

Compressed Files In Navigation Panel

slp 9.2 + intel 915g + sata

hello all we are trying to install slp 9.2 on a INTEL Original Motherboard 915 GV WBL / 80GB SATA HDD( Seagate make )/ 52X CD-ROM Drive (LG make) /256MB DDR RAM (Simmtronics make ) / 100/1000 Mbps Lan card (Intel make). The installation completes successfully but after restart there is not grub . If we use the SLP 9.2 boot disk and select boot from harddisk it merrily boots into the system. all options have been set to default so assuming the grub is installed on MBR. Any pointers? time zone changed

I just discovered that my clock is showing London, England time. I tried to configure the time zone, but it is already set to Pacific Std Time. Why did this happen? How do I fix it? How to set Preffered Application in suse-9.3

Dear people, I am using the gnome desktop on suse-9.3 and something is bugging me. How do you set the "Preffered Application" on it ? How do you get goobox to rip into mp3

Dear all, By default the install of goobox cannot rip audio tracks into mp3 ( the choice is not active when u click on Advanced to pick format of ripping ). I'm running into issues with kavi2svcd. Sometimes when I run it to convert an AVI to MPEG, it doesn't work right. If I come back to the computer while it is running, and my monitor has gone into powersave mode, when I hit a key to bring it to life ( usually the control key) kavi starts into the mplex mode, but I know it hasn't finished the transcode part, because the mpeg file is way too small ( and I know this for fact when I play it). and once it has completed my computer slows WAY down, and when I run top I see these processes stil running, even after I have exited from kavi: 10399 root 15 0 58264 26m 1312 S 45.2 3.5 21:16.45 transcode 10409 root 16 0 26136 21m 1040 R 43.5 2.9 19:01.80 mpeg2enc 10410 root 15 0 2224 1084 476 S 5.6 0.1 3:38.45 mp2enc see the mem use of these?? 45% and 43% and 5%. any ideas?? -- Paul Cartwright Registered Linux user # 367800 X-Request-PGP: http://home.comcast.net/~p.cartwright/wsb/key.asc

Adding packman's repo to YaST crashes it

Hi, Suse 9.3 here. I tried to add packman's repo (get the server data from susewiki.org) to YaST. After the installation source is added, and I go to Install/Remove software, it opens the window, opens the box for "Retrieving.." and after that it closes both. This is the error I get when I start yast2 from xterm: Command: /sbin/yast2 sw_single & Segmentation fault at /usr/share/YaST2/clients/sw_single.ycp:161 /sbin/yast2: line 207: 24738 Segmentation fault $ybindir/y2base $module "$@" qt -geometry "$Y2_GEOMETRY" $Y2QT_ARGS If I disable the packmans source, Yast starts to work again. I have always used on my other machines apt-get, and when on a new install I decided to use YaST - booom :) Anyone has an idea what may get wrong? Cheers -- Svetoslav Milenov (Sunny)
