Only root access to automounted USB drive

Hi All, I use a SUSE 9.3 distribution that has hotplug installed. When I plug an external Hard Disk, I have only ready only user access and read write access as root. changing the parameters in the file /etc/sysconfig/hotplug does not help: HOTPLUG_DO_MOUNT="manual" HOTPLUG_MOUNT_TYPE="fstab" HOTPLUG_USE_SUBFS="no" even if there are the correct param in the fstab file: /dev/sdg1 /media/usbdisk subfs rw,noauto,users,sync,fs=ext3 0 0 /dev/sdg2 /media/usbdisk_1 subfs rw,noauto,users,sync,fs=reiserfs 0 0 BUT if the filesystem on the USB disk is FAT32 I get a rw access to this !! reading the /etc/mtab show that the submountd does not seem to take into account my fstab suggestions ?? new kernel lost my monitor

when I upgrade via YOU the other day to the new kernel, I ran SaX2 it could not find my Dell M782 monitor. So X would not run ( or is that another issue) ? when I tried to run startx I got an error message saying open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) no such device. what are my options?? I have a Dell Dimension 4400 that has run just fine for SUSE 9.2 an 9.3 up to this point. -- Paul Cartwright Registered Linux user # 367800

Depends on what media you want to backup onto.. For tape backup I'd recomend Arkeia Network Backup Lite edition. It's free for single server, installs via rpms and is very easy to setup & use if you've ever had experience with tape backups before. It also lets you setup scheduled jobs. SuSE 9.3 Dell Inspiron 5150 Overheating

I'm back on Linux as my main box (Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop) -- wiped all traces of WinXP/Dell utility partitions and have SuSE 9.3 Pro loaded on. Yea! (Of course, there is a little Apache/Samba/Folding@Home and SETI Search box as well as the Smoothwall firewall box at home.) I ran SuSE 8.2 Pro (boxed set) on an old laptop before it died - love SuSE! I've noticed some heat build up issues since the change to SuSE: tried using Grip in KDE and the rip and encode got part way through, then SuSE reported immediate shutdown because of heat. Happened two times on different days. I was at home with the swamp cooler on. I haven't checked the laptop's exhaust fans yet. So, I've loaded XFCE 4.2 on and things run much cooler -- verify this with #cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THM/trip_points -- gives max temp allowed then do #cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THM/temperature to report current temp. Fascinating to watch in KDE with Firefox open on a site like Yahoo with lots of animated GIFs -- big spike! Yes, ACPId is running and I have the appropriate options checked in the different window managers. I've heard some scuttlebutt that Dell laptops have issues with overheating. Anyone have any experiences with this? or any further tweaks I can apply. I might be picking up one of the laptop cooling fans that sit under the body -- are these any help? Any problems with the fans being moved to fast from these extra cooling units? TIA -- your comments are greatly appreciated. -*-Bill

apache ip based vhosts and ssl problems

ok, i guess i really don't understand how this works. i have a server (9.3 with all current patches) that i'm trying to do ip based vhosts with and ssl'ifying some of the vhosts. i have this host.org (192.168.1.100) host-devel.org (192.168.1.101) with virtual ips on the interfaces and the hosts/ip's registed in dns. if i don't ssl anything the vhosts work as expect. in /etc/apache2/vhosts.d i have host.conf host-devel.conf with appropriate syntax (at least it works and http -S says its ok). the webserver starts correctly and works as i expect. http://host.org/ gives me the space i expect as does host-devel.org. however, if i copy the vhost-ssl.template file to host-ssl.conf and configure it as: <VirtualHost 192.168.1.100:443> # General setup for the virtual host DocumentRoot "/srv/www/htdocs_main" ServerName host.org:443 #ServerAdmin webmaster(a)example.com ..... httpd2 -S -DSSL reports syntax ok but the server fails to start with rcapache2 startssl and in the error log i get: [Tue Jul 19 10:01:47 2005] [error] Server should be SSL-aware but has no certificate configured [Hint: SSLCertificateFile] i'm obviously missing something quite simple here, but i sure cannot see it. any sanity checking will be appreciated. -- michael

popmail behavior

Why does my pop mail alway loose tract of the last message and download all the files from /var/spool/mail/user . I never had this problem with qpopper and other clients, but evolution is constantly downloading duplicate messages. I have 10 of all the oldest messages.

QT app not linking under Suse 9.2

Hi, I tried compiling one of the examples under the QT lib directory and it compiles fine but does not seem to link. Looks like the gl stuff is not installed or not where it needs to be. Any idea how to fix this. When the panels disappear, the process labeled klauncher has died and or got zombied. Its job is to turn on like a user-space daemon and draw up the panels and then place and populate all the icons, applets and menus. This gogo behavior has been apparent since the old SuSE 8.X versions of GNOME. I wish that the designers of GNOME would write a quick script to check for dead processes and regenerate panels and the desktop. You can control-alt-f1, login as root and then either reboot the computer or telinit from 5 to 4 back to 5. This is however only a temporary hack. I get it a lot worse because Ephinany crashs and then I lose the panels (I use 3) and the desktop icons , which are drawn onto the desktop by Ephijany. If you use KDE two or more times, properly fsck the partitions, GNOME tends to fix itself in a Microsoft kind of way: it keeps a few reboots and then GNOME is back to normal. Until then, use the other window managers and enjoy the change in scenery. Sorry if I am not of more help. This is how I handle it. I am a minority user of SuSE in NYC. I however have been monitoring the list for a month and only have noticed a high level of whining and not enough users trying to help each other solve problems such as this chronic annoyance. I wish they would fix this. I prefer running GNOME over KDE but I like Konqueror image rendering better on GNOME. The new Opera is great also but Dillo is fab for reading newssites when SuSE 9.3 is under load. Good luck, Doctor. Fixed: [was] No sound for Intel 82801

Nailed it. I went into Yast. Found the installed driver. Clicked on Options. There are three settings. The last one is a "fix for buggy hardware". It defaults to "0"; and I tried setting it to "1". Suddenly, I have sound(!) ( I guess a Gateway is considered *buggy* hardware...guess it must be since it was "designed for XP" ;) )

OpenOffice-2.0 from 9.3 on 9.2 possible?

Did someone already tried to install OpenOffice-2.0 (1.9...) from 9.3 on 9.2? Just curious, is it possible?? Or are not all rpm dependencies satisfied. -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless
