I had to change my motherboard with two Ethernet ports on board. It is the same motherboard! 9.3 vs SLES

Hi guys, We have to setup a server for our company which wil basically be a website hosting server, running apahce2 with php and all the rest, mysql, and postfix. Domains will be as many as the hardware can take. Hardware are dual 3Ghz Xeons, 2GB RAM, Intel server board in a 2u chassis, two 15k rpm SCSI discs in a hardware raid-1, two hardware based gigabit network controllers. The machine has two live IPs, both on the same subnet, both with 100mbit bandwith to the outside world (dunno about the contention, but it's fairly low - expensive hosting facility for high bandwidth availability). The question that I'm struggling with, is which version of SUSE to use. SLES made very good impressions on me, but I will have to add some packages and also upgrade many of the packages that it ships with. Which makes me wonder if it is worth the money to pay for SLES (basically for the support) if I'm going to void the support by fiddling with the internals. Also considering that we have a handful of very capable and experience linux sysadmins. Which brings me to 9.3. I had my doubts, especially reading some of the reports on this list, but I must say, in my experience so far 9.3 is by far the best 2.6 based SUSE distro yet. I have not had a single problem with anything, I have it running on a number of desktops and an ever increasing number of servers. Packages are up to date, enough that I'll have to change very little, and performance so far have been excellent. What would be the merits of taking SLES9 over 9.3 in this case? I do realise that SLES' kernel is probably more optimised for network throughput than 9.3, but will two 100mbit connections actually push 9.3 to it's limits, especially considering the hardware? SUSE thinks I have a laptop, but I don't

in the hardware section, SUSE 9.3 thinks I have a Sony Vaio laptop. When i first installed it, it put the battery icon in the tray. NFS: connection times out

Hi there I have two linux machines. Machine #1: Is a LAMP server. I have setup cron to make a nightly tar ball of the htdocs and mysql data and to keep it in /backup The /backup directory I have exported via NFS. Machine #2: Is a NFS client of the LAMP server and mounts the exported /backup directory and makes a nightly copy for backup purposes. This has been running well for a long time until both machines rebooted for some reason (could it have been a power hiccup?). Machine 1 came up no problem but Machine 2 stopps at "Importing Net File System (NFS)" and finally I get "RPC: remote system error - connection timed out" Machine 1 has a 2.4.21-231-athlon kernel and Machine 2 has a 2.4.21-243-athlon kernel The first thing I thought of was that Machine 1 had activated the firewall again and is blocking traffic. I had looked at it and I believe that the firewall is not running but I am not sure. I have tried to connect Machine 1 from a third linux computer (my laptop) and but I have NOT been successful. Suse 9.3 behaving strangly

Greetings I can't put my finger on this one! I load plenty of PCs and my dhcp is working perfectly (Fedora suse9 9.1 9.2 etc even a gentoo box and a centos box, With 9.3 it takes a good 10 minutes after boot-up before the system finally gets an IP address from the server. I have tried disabling the Susefirewall but it does exactly the same.. Any ideas as to what could be causing this. Please note that it is not one PC I have lots of them doing it? All were loaded manually (one by one) Thanks Chadley

Screen corruption - faulty hardware?

Hello all, I'm currently suffering from the following problem: At a certain point in time, the screen will start to shake a little bit, becoming worse, and then start to corrupt, and will eventually lock up. This can take as little as a few seconds to a few minutes. This is independent of the OS. I've tested the RAM, have tried it with a different PSU, and a different graphics card: no luck so far. About all the test mails to the list

There doesn't have to be 15-20 mail with 'test' or 'is the list down' There is an archive at lists.suse.com/archive. If there hasn't been a new entry there, odds are the list is down. There is a test list, which you can subscribe to at test-list-subscribe(a)suse.com - if you can't, odds are the list server is malfunctioning, or you will get an error message explaining what the problem is. There is an admin, who doesn't always monitor this list, but whom you can make aware of any problems at suse-linux-e-owner(a)suse.com, assuming it's a local suse-linux-e problem, or ml-admin(a)suse.com if it's a general list server problem.

SUSE 9.3 - /dev/lp0 not working

Folks, I'm having trouble getting the parallel port working with SUSE 9.3 (for a HP LaserJet 4L printer). I've tried the available settings in my BIOS. This is on a Sony GR290 laptop, in a triple boot with RHEL 4 WS and Windows XP. Printing through the parallel port works fine under Windows XP and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 WS. A lsmod reveals parport_pc 38212 0 parport 33864 1 parport_pc Yup, lp is missing. I try a modprobe lp which temporarily gets lp in the lsmod list, with lp 11076 0 parport_pc 38212 0 parport 33864 2 lp,parport_pc But it disappears when I try the YaST installer. For some reason, the CUPS interface isn't working as expected; the root / root password doesn't seem to get into the associated admnistrative interface. Perhaps a hint here could help too. Server Sizing

Hi. I'm going to install a Server with the following software: IBM UDB2 8.1 IBM Websphere 5.0 Peoplesoft Enterpriseone 8.11 almost all this software goes in /opt we have an internal Raid 1 with 1406GB, and an external FC Raid 5 with 280 GB we plan to have this mount points / /opt => apps space + 100 GB for databases /var /home => mounted from another system but for a production system with 50 - 100 users how many space is recomended for: /var /srv /usr at this moment we have only one mount point / with 20 GB and have base system installed autentifying agains an SLES 9 with ldap any recomendations? mkinitrd just work with suse kernels

Hi folks, I'm building my own kernel, but had problems when running mkinitrd to create the ramdisk image... it only detects the rpm based kernels, not the one compiled by myself. Does anyone have an idea of what's wrong?? SuSE Watcher question

My SuSE Watcher icon generally shows orange, and I frequently get dialog box that it is unable to connect. This is on SuSE 9.3 both at home and at work. At work, I am behind a firewall, and although my proxy settings are correct, there could be something blocking it. I checked SuSE Firewall settings, but I did not see any settings that might affect SuSE watcher. Hi guys whats up? I have 2 hp laser printers into my network...the first one is hp 4550, the secund one is hp laserjet 5. eth0 down after running YOU

Hi, newbie here :-) I have SuSE installed on my laptop as a dual boot option. I recently ran Yast Online Update for the first time. After the Update completed my eth0 is down and I am not online anymore from SuSE. Any ideas why this happened? I don't know how to get eth0 running again, any suggestions? Regards from Denmark. Dan
