dvd not detected

Hi All, I have a MSI VIA KM400A mother board with sata support. I have 2 ATA drives connected to IDE0, 2 cdrom drives connected to IDE1 and 1 SATA drive. I am using suse 9.1. The problem is my dvd writer does not get detected. The only way for me to get the dvd writer detected is to boot off the 9.1 dvd from the dvd writer -> boot from hard drive. in /proc/ide i see the links to the hard drives and cdrom drives but the link to the dvd writer is not there. But when i boot off the dvd it will be created. What creates the ide under proc? Upgrading MySQL to 4.1

I'm running a 9.2 box with mysql 4.0.21-4.4, people here need to use subqueries, i recommended using postgresql, because they'll probably need other features in the future, but they want to stay with mysql. I googled a lot looking for an 4.1 rpm for suse, just found the rpms of SuSE 9.3, tried to upgrade my installation with them, but there i enter and infinite list of dependencies (it starts with libmysqlclient.so.12 needed by perl-DBD-mysql). I could force the upgrade, but i don't want to break anything. Any suggestions to upgrade it?, (without exporting - installing mysql.com rpms - reimporting, i would like to use suse' rpms) CI.-

Default file/folder permissions under '/etc' = ?

Hi, I have a friend I pushed very hard to move to Linux and now made for himself (and also for me) an extremely unpleasant situation:( Before I would attempt to fix really _all_ the file/folder permissions he ruined in '/etc' on his SUSE 9.1, would like to ask your opinion please, what I could do. As I understood, he did somehow a recursive chown and changed ALL of the stuff in the above folder to have the owner root:root :((( I wouldn't like to "lose him" and let him return so easily to the dark side! So at first I let SuSEconfig fix the most important stuff on that comp. At second I have all of the official .html pages from the Novell's site concerning 9.1, where all of their .rpm packages are listed with files/folders AND access rights detailed. I filtered out from them all of the lines having '/etc' in their pathnames and having NO root:root as owner. That was a not so huge list and changed 'back' all of that stuff, causing the system working now without Mb-s of bloody error-logs. Is there please a more precise way to get rid of this access-right problem? Would e.g. changing the system's general security-level to a very high level then back help us/me? I have physical access to that system. Thanks, Pelibali

How do I set glib in PREFIX?

Hi gang, I tried to build the source rpm of dillo (Patrick's version also), but I keep getting this error: checking for glib-config... no checking for GLIB - version >= 1.2.0... no *** The glib-config script installed by GLIB could not be found *** If GLIB was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in *** your path, or set the GLIB_CONFIG environment variable to the *** full path to glib-config. I can't seem to figure out 'how' to do what it's wanting me to do. I'm using 9.3 and I know that glib is newer than 1.2.0. Thanks for any help, JB

devices:/ missing on 9.2

Hi! I just upgraded from 9.1 to 9.2. I had 'show device icons' set for my desktop under 9.1, but now they are gone. When I login, kdesktop says that klauncher doesn't know that protocol. Under the kde service manager, devices is gone, too. Drives:/ is there, though. I know that kde 3.4 uses media:/, so how do I tell my desktop to use devices:/ or media:/? Thanks! -Steven

SuSE 9.1 Diagnostics Apps?

I'm suddenly having a weird issue with my SuSE 9.1 box. It is a 1.9GHz AMG processor, but it's acting like it's a 200MHz processor or something. Takes like 10 minutes to boot up and pulling up a webpage via localhost transfers at 30 bytes a second! I'm assuming this is probably a processor issue (it does the same thing booting into XP Home), but I need to track down exactly what's going on. Can anyone suggest a diagnostics program that will show me stats on things like how fast the processor is actually running? I've looked in YAST but don't really see anything that will do it. Thanks! Wireless pcmcia card

Hi All I have a wireless pcmcia ethernet card(OEM 11 MB/s CNET) I have done everything to try and get it to work but doesn't work. Does this mean that it is not supported by linux. Regards Gerald
