Hi guys, As many of you surely know, I've been having a lot of graphics card problems. At first I thought it was the nVidia driver, as I had the same issues with four different cards. But when I replaced it with a Radeon 9250, I got the same problem (but only after a reboot though). Then I figured out that if I disable apic and acpi at boot, the problem went away. For a while. Now, I have to boot into runlevel 3, delete the .ICE-unix and .X11-unix directories, do startx as root, and then only start xdm before I can work. If I don't, the following happens: X starts, I get a quick flash of something, much like what you sometimes get when changing resolutions, and then the screen just goes blank, and eventually goes into DPMS mode. For what it's worth, in Windows I have issues too, sometimes after a reboot the screen looks like what those old VGA screens use to look like when you try a too high resolution on them. Only thing is my screen switches off if you try that, so that's obviously not what happens. Anyway, by this time I'm really starting to suspect the motherboard, because I know the graphics card (all five of them) checks out fine. Cannot change KDM greetings

It's easy and intuitive to change the KDM greetings for the default KDM theme. But the same thing is impossible for the SuSE KDM theme (SuSE 9.3). This very nice KDM theme looks like a GDM and the default bootsplash graphics, but I cannot change the greet ings. The settings in the Control Center and YaST sysconfig editor have effects only if I use the KDE's default KDM theme.

Background Image for Every Console

It's very easy to enable the background image of the the verbose bottsplash for every console on Gentoo Linux. What's more, I can, after having downloaded other themes, have a different theme for every console. I only need to modify some config files. How can I enable the same thing in SuSE Linux (9.3)?

ServerTokens Directive Apache with SLOX4.1

Hello: I am trying to reduce the amount of information given out when someone tries to Banner Grab for Version information. I read that "ServerToken" directive in httpd.conf file will limit the amount of information given out. First off I didn't find the "ServerToken" in the httpd.conf with a search. So I added it in the Global Setting section (where I found it on RedHat box). Set it to "ServerToken Prod" or "OS" or "Min" no quotation marks of course. I found "ServerSignature On" changed it to "Off", restarted httpd, and then ran "HEAD / HTTP/1.0" and it still comes back with HEAD / HTTP/1.0 200 OK Content-Length: 720 Content-Type: text/html Last-Modified: Wed, 11 May 2005 20:16:21 GMT Client-Date: Tue, 31 May 2005 04:49:32 GMT 404 Not Found Date: Tue, 31 May 2005 04:31:44 GMT Server: Apache/2.0.49 (Unix) PHP/4.3.9 # How do I get rid of this an say something else Content-Length: 1335 Content-Type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1 Client-Date: Tue, 31 May 2005 04:49:33 GMT Client-Response-Num: 1 Proxy-Connection: close X-Cache: MISS from firewall.domainname X-Powered-By: PHP/4.3.9 # How do I get rid of this and say something else I guess my question should be what controls the amount of information given out ServerTokens, ServerSignature, or something else? And to configure these items do I make my changes in the httpd.conf, or httpd.conf.SuSEconfig, or in /etc/sysconfig/apache? Which file and variable controls what gets displayed. I have made changes to SeverTokens and ServerSignature in httpd.conf and httpd.conf.SuSEconfig, and HTTPD_SEC_SAY_FULLNAME directive to "no" in /etc/sysconfig/apache at different times and then restarted the httpd with rchttpd restart, and then did the "HEAD / HTTP/1.0" from the command line and I always get the above with no changes. 10 GIG partition not big enough to contain a minimal instalation

Subject says it all. I am trying to install SuSE 9.3 Pro. I tried to install 9.3 on a 4 GIG, then made room for 7 GIG and finally on a 10.6 partition and still get the above message. Something is wrong here. I have libranet 2.8.1 and can install a minimal system on a 400 MEG partition. Any suggestions, still want to try 9.3. You can download libranet 2.8.1 at libranet.com for free and it is a debian system, which uses apt-get, a better system than rpm. I know you can get apt-get for rpm, don't want to start a flame war. jozien

32 bit software on 64 bit

Hi, I have Dell powerEdge 1850, with dual processor 3.6 GHz, I bought SLE 9.0 and used the x86 CD when installtion starts i got a message " you are installing 32 bit software on 64 bit computer" to my knowledge the specs are for 32 bit I continued the installtion with no problem...but should i use the EMT64T( i tried it did not give this message but there alot of errors loading modules I will install oracle on this server... any suggestion?? Yet another Sound Trial (YaST) 2

Like many on this list, I can't get sound properly configured with 9.3. Searching google has not provided anything helpful. Hardware is as follows: Asus P4T533 with onboard AC97 Audio Controller (disabled in the BIOS) Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live Platinum 512 MB RAM SuSE 9.3 installed on IBM SCSI Drive LOTS of other hardware I believe irrelevant. For the record, all this works as advertised under Win2K, so I'm assuming, for now, no hardware problems. It also worked on earlier releases of the 9.x series. KsCD loads automatically and plays, even identifies the correct CD and track in the system tray, but gives no sound over the speakers or headphones. Ctrl Cntr | Sounds & Multimedia | Sound System | has enable sound system checked and auto_suspend checked with a 5 second delay. Neither test sound nor test midi produces anything audible. | System Bell gives a tone set at 600Hz and 200 msec duration but I believe that is being output on the system speaker. Ctrl Cntr | YaST2 Modules | Hardware | Sound | shows two different sound cards as being configured: [0] CM18738-6ch-MX as running (this should be the P4T533 onboard AC97 audio controller which is disabled in the system BIOS. This card has the master vol set at 70 and the PCM volume at 48. Test of these settings gives no audible output. All the other settings are at 48. Since I have it theoretically disabled in the BIOS, this is what I would expect. But since it is theoretically disabled, I'm a bit confused as to why it is even showing in the list and showing as running. [1] CT4760 SBLive! as running and the card I want to use. This card has the master and PCM vols both set to 48; the other 24 options are all set at 50 or higher. I believe this would allow the sound to be heard if it was being output at all. As in card [0], test of these settings gives no audible output. This holds true for both user and root which I believe is not what others have reported. Not sure at this point how to proceed. One thought was to delete the sound card [0] definition leaving only the current SBLive! option but I haven't tried that as yet as it seems like something disabled in the BIOS can't be running even if 9.3 says it is. Am I wrong in this assumption? For what it's worth, I can't get sound in my Mepis 3.3 distro either. All 3 distros reside on their own SCSI drives and do not talk with one another. Is this possibly a KDE related problem? Since one (Mepis) is ver 3.3 and the other (SuSE) 3.4, I was discounting this as a likely problem candidate. At this point any suggestion greatly appreciated. dave -- David C.
