Hi all, I thought something of this nature had already been discussed, but I couldn't find anything in the mail archives. It seems anytime I try to open, save, insert files into OO now, the file requestor creates a sig 11 crash. The file requestor window opens and closes in an instant, then the crash. It's not crashing OO and you can continue to work nicely in it, but the file requestor is not working any longer. Partition Table Erased, Machine still running

Hi Folks, I erased the partition table of a running machine. Shame on me. Machine is still running though. There _must_ be a way to get theinformation from the running kernel. As fdisk states: "The kernel still uses the old table" I tried /proc/partitions, but can't seem to get the cylinders right. At the moment I am copying 120GB data over ethernet, which is kind of tedious. Anyone ever recover from this ? Regards Dan

Suse minimal install based on rescue - what to add to rescue to be bootable

Hi, I'm trying to make real barebone SuSE installation that I could use for various purposes - for adding particular applications. First step to overcome is to add things for partition to be bootable. I guess rescue system already includes everything else except kernel and maybe grub. I've done this: umount /disks/rescue2 wget ftp://ftp.solnet.ch/pub/SuSE/i386/9.2/boot/rescue mv rescue rescue.comp uncompress -d -S .comp -f rescue cat rescue > /dev/hda7 mount /disks/rescue2 ls -l /disks/rescue2 Now I get filesystem. /boot directory is empty - I guess that is normal for Suse. But now I wonder: - what do I have to add so I can boot into partition (kernel, grub, ...) and what configuration has to be performed ? - can I install packages to that partition with rpm? How ? - how to easily duplicate image to other computers/disks ? I can post my saga to somewhere if anyone is interested, but don't know where is appopriate place for this Suse minimal-rescue install story ? Thanks in advance, regards, Rob.

logrotate question.

Hi guys, I use amavis-stats to impress the suits (excellent sales tool!). amavis-stats checkes for the log file you specify, plus rotated logs - it searches for .1 and .01 extentions. It doesn't, however deal with compressed logs. Many of the mailservers I have in the field are old P-II boxes with old discs, anything from 1gb up. So large logs become a problem. I was wondering if it's possible to have logrotate compress all logs but the most recent rotated log, i.e. say amavis.log.1 ? How to remote desktop from WinXP client

I have a workstation running SUSE 9.2. I want to access its desktop remotely from a Windows XP machine. can anybody tell me how to do this ? Previously, I tried the following approach: 1. on SUSE 9.2 workstation: vncserver :1 2. on WindowsXP: downloaded tightvnc connect to <hostname>:2 but it didn't work out. thanks in advance ! --Long

9.2 logdigest extended stats

Anyone know why the 'System status' section of logdigest's extended status report is always blank on my 9.2 box? I've stared and stared at the script at /etc/cron.daily/logdigest and for the life of me don't understand why the `procinfo` that is supposed to show up in that section of the logdigest report comes out blank. All the other sections report something, and procinfo on the command line works fine, so what am I not seeing? Hello all. Just upgraded my SUSE 9.2 Pro system from kde-3.3 to 3.4. I use kmail for all my e-mail needs with integrated gpg for signing mail. I've never had any problems with gpg in the past. gpg-agent was set to start when I started my system and it would prompt me for my passphrase when I sent e-mail. However, now when I start my machine I get an error message about gpg-agent not running. Regardless of what I do, I cannot get gpg-agent to run correctly. And, when I send e-mail I get the following error message: You need a passphrase to unlock the secret key for user: (my key ID displayed here) Christopher Shanahan (N/A) This dialog will reappear every time the passphrase is needed. For a more secure solution that also allows caching the passphrase, use gpg-agent. gpg-agent was found in /usr/bin/gpg-agent, but does not appear to be running. For information on how to set up gpg-agent, see http://kmail.kde.org/kmail-pgpmime-howto.html I'm familiar with this howto and I just went through it again to make sure I didn't inadvertently break something. kmail seems to be setup correctly but I still cannot get my system to recognize gpg-agent as running. HP JetDiret.

Hi. I have a PrinterServer HP JetDirect 500x, and its running fine with my HP Deskjet 895Cxi and a Brother HL5040 printer. They are of course parallel conneted to the JetDirect, when I'm in Windows. Before and also in SuSE 9.2 I have set up the printers via the JetDirect PrinterServer, but now I'm unable to do it. If I set them up to print via TCP, I get printing all the time via the Deskjet printer even I have choosen the Brother to be printed on. So the problem is, that the printing is going out only to the port1 where the DJ895Cxi is connected, and there's no switching to port 2, where the Brother is connected. This was the reason why I downloaded the HP software, but it will not work. Online update woes on Suse 9.2

Hello, Very strange things happening with Online update and System update. Although the kernel was updated during the install process, I can't get the kernel source to update nor can I find it. Also there are package and dependency discrepancies with samba, kernel and mailman. I don't want to roll back the packages to earlier versions just solve a dependency problem. On a similar note, I can't find any of *.ko module files under the source directory. Want went wrong? ?Package/Library?Kind of Dependency ?Additional InformationI ? i ?mailman ?needs to be reinstalled?(Version 2.1.5-5 required, 2.1.5-5.6 curre| ? i ?kernel-bigsmp ?is required by... ?(Version 2.6.8-24 required, 2.6.8-24.13 cu| ? i ?kernel-bigsmp ?needs to be reinstalled?(kernel-bigsmp is required by kernel-bigsm| ? i ?samba ?is required by... ?(Version 3.0.7-5 required, 3.0.9-2.3 curre| ? i ?samba ?needs to be reinstalled?(samba is required by samba-vscan)? ? i ?samba-client ?is required by... ?(Version 3.0.7-5 required, 3.0.9-2.3 curre?
