find service pack installed

hi all Can anyone guide me how can I find the service pack installed in SLES9 box. for me /etc/SuSE-release and SPident -v is not giving me any information or might be I am not able to understand. on SPident -v update 2 means SP2 ???? How to? - Doing a clean install from multiple sources simultaneously

This question seems quite similar to lots of other questions I've seen, but I believe this is different - I have the SUSE 10.0 GM DVD with me (both on disc and as ISO on HDD) and I've downloaded KDE 3.5 and OOo 2.00. For some reasons I would like to do a clean install after wiping my root partition (home is separate). But I don't want to install KDE 3.41 which came with SUSE 10 (IIRC). Same goes for OOo. Or will you just say "install whatever comes with SUSE 10.0 and then upgrade from your local RPMs"? Shriramana.

Loading onto USB devices: Any Developments?

I use SuSE 10 and XFCE4. I just loaded 16 MB onto a usb device and it took a very long time. I know that this is a bug that Novell is working on. Cyrus IMAP - Non-local passwords

Hi, I'm setting up Cyrus IMAP on Suse 10.0. I found out how to set up mailboxes using cyradm, have 2 set up so far. One is the same name as a normal login user, and the other is not a login user. Cyrus accepts the login password of the normal login user. How do I set the password on the non-login user to access this user mailbox only? Also, how do I set Cyrus up to only accept connections over imaps (port 993)? Many thanks, Jim Flanagan

SUSE 10, wireless and default routes and such

This is on a laptop. How wireless interfaces work on non-portable computers is, I think, a different matter altogether. I installed SUSE 10 while disconnected from my LAN and all was well. Wireless cam up on boot, I got IP address etc, updated resolve.conf and set routes and life was good as far as those things go. I then reinstalled, while attached to LAN by wire and air, and now I can get an IP address, but the other things don't happen. I've used find and grep and vim till I'm blue in the face and I don't see what to change. Yast doesn't give me any options that I can find, and I can't find any likely references to resolv.conf or the various interfaces I've used. Please tell me, what do I change? The most desired behaviour is this: If wire is plugged in, it's configured with IP address etc, routes are set up and resolv.conf is reconfigured. If wireless is plugged in, it's configured with IP address etc, local routes are set up. If wire is not plugged in, then all routes are set up and resolv.conf is reconfigured. If two (or more) wireless devices work, the fastest is configured with default routes and resolv.conf is reconfigured, if there is no wire. Just for the moment, I will settle for wireless working as my primary interface (as it is).

SuSe 10.0 - System Hanging on Install

Hi everyone, I'm a relatively new Linux user, trying to install SuSe 10.0 (I'm installing SuSe on my brother's recommendation). I downloaded the ISO files, burned the images to CD, and started the fresh install. I got through installation setup on disc 1, but when it reboots (with disc 1 still in the drive), and I choose "boot from disc" to continue the install, the system hangs after starting the HAL daemon (I don't get into any graphical interface). I tried restarting without the disc, which worked fine...until I got to the next step of the install, where I was instructed to insert disc 2. When I do that, the system hangs completely. Can't switch to another console, ctrl + alt + del does nothing... The support portal lists a possible fix, telling me to manually eject the CD and that SuSe will detect it and instruct me to re-insert the disc. This does not happen for me. Even after going through emergency CD removal, the system remains hung. Please help! -Myles

Hi experts, I'd like to ask for a bit of help with using id3v2. My mp3 files have names in form 'author_author__song_name.mp3' and don't have id3 tag at all. I'm trying to get author and song name to id3 tag from file name like this: ls *.mp3 | xargs -n1 -i basename \{\} .mp3 | xargs -n1 -i id3v2 -t `ls *.mp3 | basename \{\} .mp3 | awk -F__ '{print $1}'` -A Greatest_Hits_80s -g Pop {}.mp3 This does not produce what I would expect and title is "author_author__song_name" instead of "author_author". When I try ls *.mp3 | xargs -n1 -i basename \{\} .mp3 | awk -F__ '{print $1}' or ls *.mp3 | xargs -n1 -i basename \{\} .mp3 | awk -F__ '{print $2}' I get author or song_name as expected. Setting up redundant file servers

I've set up a Linux file server for the municipal offices of my town (as a volunteer consultant and Linux evangelist). It's working fine -- Samba makes it look like a Win machine to the rest of the world. But now I'm interested in setting up a second machine as a redundant backup to the first one. The intent is that if one goes down, the other one will take over with little or no lost data and the shift will be imperceptible to the network users. What software should I be looking at to accomplish this? Paul

Occassional freezing on open suse 10

Hello, I've been using open suse for a couple of days now, and I feel there are some stability issues on my PC. The PC locks up occasionally when logging in or out of a KDE session. The mouse curser moves, but no access to keyboard, and I cannot switch to a terminal using alt-F switch. I also found the system locked up after I let it running overnight, only see a static picture of the screensaver on, with no response. I have applied all the latest updates. My hardware is AMD 2800, 512 MB RAM, Nvidia2 based graphics card, and a Maudio 7.1 sound card. I wish to believe this a hardware problem, but XP runs smooth on this machine. Is there any way to lookup cause of crash in any log files after a reboot? Thanks, Shibu

workaround for /dev/pilot that's out to lunch?

Hi All, I find that after a few [days, uses, lunar cycles??] my /dev/pilot device stops appearing when I hit the sync button on my palm cradle. Sometimes it's the palm itself, and a soft reset fixes it, but much of the time the only cure is to reboot my SuSE 9.3 system. That's rather a nuisance. Curiously the rest of the USB system continues to work. I can't tell if this is something to do with udev, the USB system (unlikely) or something else but it's certainly a pain. Can anyone tell me if there is a way to restart the USB/udev parts of the system so I can perhaps kick /dev/pilot back to life without a full restart?
