Compiling and installing a kernel

Hi, I am running 10, and I had a couple of questions regarding compiling a new kernel. 1.) Is there any way to just compile a default kernel. The reason is that I don't know what all is compiled in my current version and don't want to take any risks. 2.) Will this screw up my rpms? I think the kernel was installed as an rpm.

SSH issue

Well, this is not really a "huge" issue, since it doesn't prevent me from SSHing into my server; it's just one more button I have to press. I just installed SuSe 10.0 yesterday on one of my servers and things are working pretty okay (I'm about to get Samba going for a PDC, if I can). I have, however, discovered something interesting. I try to SSH into my server from my desktop, and I get the message "Enter Your Authentication Response" and a text box to enter my password, which is all fine and dandy. But when I hit OK afterwards, another box appears, stating (once again) "Enter Your Authentication Response." This time, however, there is no text box into which I may enter a password, so I simply hit OK again and I'm into the system. Anyone know why this is happening? -Myles

Argh, after a period of perfect w-lan connectivity with SuSE 9.3, 10.0 causes agony again. After the system update, wireless didn't work. I then installed the ipw-firmware package; after configuring the w-lan interface it worked fore a few hours until I rebooted. Since then, the wireless connection has gone. I tried to install the latest ipw2200 and ieee80211 versions, but neither compiled. I then reinstalled the original SuSE 10.0 kernel modules (via system repair), rebuilt ipw-firmware from the src-package (as I picked up in a SuSE mailing-list), but still, no connectivity. At this stage, I just don't know what's wrong: kernel modules, firmware, or network setup. And it all worked so nicely with 9.3! Any help would be greatly appreciated. openSUSE @ FOSDEM 2006

Hi everyone, the sixth Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting (commonly known as FOSDEM, [http://www.fosdem.org/] will take place during the last week-end (25&26) of February 2006 in the city of Brussels, Belgium. It's an annual 2-day event hosting talks, tutorials, and stalls for the free software/open source community. It is organized by volunteers at the Université Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium. Access to all parts of FOSDEM is free, but donations and sponsors are welcome to help fund the event. As you may have already noticed (because Pascal blogged about it), we will have an openSUSE 'DevRoom' (Developer Room) @ FOSDEM and most likely a booth as well. Therefore, we are in the very early stages of preparation and would like to team up with you to organize the openSUSE @ FOSDEM event. To start off, we would like to get your opinion on what topics, presentation, talks, tutorials, etc. you would expect from openSUSE @ FOSDEM? And if you would like to deliver a presentation, talk, tutorial? The ultimate goal would be to have presentations distributed equally amongst community members and SUSE / Novell employees. Here are some possible topics, that are basis for discussion far: - presentations + openSUSE in general (what happend so far, what's up next) + openSUSE build infrastructure + SUSE Linux 10.1 - highlights and features - dicussion + SUSE Linux 10.2 - dicussion / plans for the future + Usability and Documentation - tutorials + packaging the SUSE-way + using the build infrastructure + LIVE CD construction + Customizing SUSE Linux That's it for the moment, we are all looking forward to a lively discussion and a great collaboration. Hi, Does SuSE have any plans to keep their Java packages for SuSE 10.0 up-to-date with new releases from Sun? We're currently falling a little behind, still being at 1.5.0_03 while Sun has released 1.5.0_06. Randall Schulz

I am not sure .. Are you using KDE? If so, then I will hazard a guess that you have the rpm gtk-qt-engine installed. If so, try uninstalling it. I had the same problem with the GTK build of CVS Emacs under KDE, and removing that rpm solved it. The price you pay is that you don't get the KDE window styles with Emacs. But the colors work. (This issue was reported to the CVS Emacs bug list some time ago, but to date hasn't been fixed.) If this solves (or rather, works around) your problem, feel free to post it to the SLE mailing list, so that it might help others. Problem during Update

My system is: AMD K7 1200MHz Athlon 266MHz MSI-K7T-266-Pro VIA-KT266 socket-A GEFORGE-2 MX-200 32MB AGP + TV-Out LG CDRW 16x10x40x DDR-DRAM 256MB NEC ZIP drive DVD drive PHILIPS TRUST AMI MOUSE Serial During Update from SuSE 9.0 while CD2 was in the drive the monitor image disappeared and the mouse did not move anymore. After a restart the following CD's worked well, while the mouse did not work; the monitor worked well. At the INTERNET test I could move with the keys to 'no test''but after that the test ran and failed, as my connection should be made by hand, which I could not at that moment. Proxy Settings

Hi All I'm having trouble getting my SUSE Linux 10 machine to connect to the internet on our LAN. I'm looking at trying to use YOU to get my system up to date. Via YAST-Network services, I went into the proxy and configured my proxy settings there. Authentication on our proxy works using NTLM. I've tried all the different syntaxes to get it working i.e. \\domain\username; domain\username etc. but when ever I try the "test proxy setting" it fails. I'm able to connect to the internet via firefox which does not use these settings but Konqueror uses these settings and also fails. Anybody out there in a similar work environment been able to get this working? Thanks Stephen
