As I recall, when I installed SUSE 10 on my laptop I chose "English-UK" as it's close to what's spoken here in Australia. Now I find software thinks I'm in the home of fog, AKA Britain, whereas I'm really in the home of sunshine, aka Perth. The language selection is tolerable, though I'd rather an Australian dictionary (for example) if one exists, so as to have Australian words such as dingo, barramundi, quoll recognised. What really bugged me was starting gnucash and finding it want to use pommy quids instead of Aussie Royals (alright, we didn't call the rowals, but we nearly did. Really) aka dollars. Strange Disk problem

My DVD seemed to be broken, so I replaced the device. I was also having problems updating from YOU, so I ran system repair. After the repair, I was able to complete YOU updates. The only thing repair seemed to do was clean up some dependencies with OOS and some references to USB. don't recall exactly. Anyone know what is going on?

How to set monitor peramters at boot time?

Hi, I am trying to use the 10.0 live eval DVD, when X starts up half way through booting I get OUT OF RANGE on my monitor. My monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 753s and my graphics card is a RADEON 9250. How do I set the scan speeds of my monitor so I can configure linux? Thanks

copying directories backed up with storeBackup

I was performing some maintenance on our server, and find myself somewhat stumped. I replaced the HD I used as a backup. It had 10 days worth of "daily" backups using storeBackup, and used up ~21GB on the HD. I know it uses hard links and maybe some other 'niceties' to shrink the size of the backups (like bz2). I just wanted to transfer the contents of one to the other. I used rsync -avz /mnt/ /data1 (/mnt was where I mounted the old HD, /data1 is where the backup drive is mounted.). It backed on days worth, which took about 21GB, and I killed it when it was maybe halfway through the second days worth as it had gone to ~25GB. Obviously, I missed something. How could those backups take 21M on the old drive and a lot more on the one I was copying to. Is this making any sense to anyone? I thought rsync would make a "mirror" copy, but obviously not quite. What would copy those storebackup directories so that they would be the same as before, with its use of hard links and all (I'm guessing the hard links might be part of my problem, but I might be way off. Thanks again for the previous help. That went so quick, maybe another one? I'm looking for a simple way to strip the first 8 characters of every file in a directory. This one has me confused, I admit. I know it can be done... just not sure how. Thanks in advance. -- David Crouch

SuSE 10.0 Gnome panels on big desktops

I've got SuSE 10.0 running nicely on an AMD-64 box with an ATI X800GTO graphics card. I'm using the ATI provided drivers to run "One Big Desktop" across two 1280x1024 monitors. I run a similar set up on an older SuSE 9.2 box as well. On the 9.2 box the top and bottom panels expand across the whole desktop (2560 pixels wide) but on the 10.0 box they will only expand to cover one monitor (1280 pixels wide). I've looked in the configuration database but I can't see anything abot this. Is there an easy way to make them expand to full desktop width ? I know I could run a separate panels on each monitor but that seems like a messy solution to me. Peter

SuSE 10.0 netdaemon and netapplet

I just put 10.0 on a new box which has both ethernet and wireless interfaces. I don't want to be able to mess about with the networking as a user, so how do I disable the netdaemon and netapplet (which seems to assume I would only ever want one or the other but not both interfaces up) ?. Peter.

raid5 degraded mode; trying to diagnose

Hello, I have been trying to figure out how to fix my raid system, SUSE 9.3, linux 2.6.11.4-21.9-default. A hard reset put my raid in unstable state, almost same errors as http://sumo.genetics.ucla.edu/pipermail/nelsonlab-dev/2004-August/000150.ht… except, sda1 seems to be the problem. md: kicking non-fresh sda1 from array! I did mdadm -A -f /dev/md0 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 and then /proc/mdstat shows the 2 disk raid active, but I could not mount it, mounting /dev/md0 hangs. If the raid is ok in degraded (missing 1 drive) mode, shouldn't I be able to mount it? Also, another strange effect before I had the guts to run any real commands was that I could only run one mdadm command; all commands after the first would hang. Because of this I could not reboot, I have been doing soft resets and booting a livecd ever since this problem occured. The next potential step after mdadm -A -f is mdadm -a /dev/md0 /dev/sda1. Since I really don't know what I'm doing, I thought I'd ask for help and I kind of value this personal data, I don't really want to risk losing it. I'm considering paying to get some help in debugging this remotely ... Exim with ClamAV on SuSE10

I'm setting up a mailserver using Exim4 and ClamAV on SuSE10. I've installed the ClamAV and Exim packages from the DVD, but it seems there is a slightly permissions issue - these packages obviously don't work together straight out of the box :-) I've tweaked /etc/clamd.conf so that clamd is now listening on the LocalSocket /var/lib/clamav/clamd-socket and I've tweaked /etc/exim/exim.conf so that it's trying to talk to clamd (and I've tweaked an Exim acl to ask it scan messages), and that's fine except that clamd doesn't have the right permissions to read the messages in /var/spool/exim/scan. I get errors like this my exim log: malware acl condition: clamd: ClamAV returned /var/spool/exim/scan/1EipSV-0000Jr-6C: Access denied. ERROR I'm a bit wary of randomly tweaking the permissions on /var/spool/exim/scan to make this work - what's the best way to do this? Can I add the clamd user to the mail group? Looking in /etc/passwd there seems to a user called vscan but it looks like it's for Amavis not ClamAV - or am I missing something here? Thanks in advance for any help... James

[SLE] Grub Error 16

Here is a quick one I came across today which I ended up using deductive reasoning over the Internet, Grub error 16. Cause: /boot existed on partition that spanned past the 127 GB mark on older P4 system. Solution: Explicitly set up /boot on small partition (32 MB in this case) below the 127 GB mark. Other symtom(s): LILO errored out when LILO install tool was run. --Jason Snyder--
