Vim kidnapped my bash editor - pls help me get (u)emacs back

Hi, How does one force bash to use emacs (or uemacs) for editing, in Suse 9.2? (I mean in a KDE's konsole window.) A while ago I installed some VIM and emacs packages and uemacs; among them kvim. (Kvim I later uninstalled.) Now, for some reason, when I try to edit anything and type in bash for example 'edit myfile', the editor that starts is vim 6.3. I have read respective paragraphs in several Linux (and bash) books & docs and tried these commands in command line: EDITOR=/usr/bin/uemacs export EDITOR VISUAL=/usr/bin/uemacs export VISUAL FCEDIT=...etc ..and also in this form: export EDITOR=/usr/bin/uemacs And done this: set -o allexport And this: shopt -o emacs and set -o emacs ..to no avail. It is vim that starts every time. The above stuff I have tried first as a user, then also as root. I have also made in my home dir a .bashrc file and entered the export EDITOR=/usr/bin/uemacs (and so on) there. AND in my home dir's '.profile'file, before the "test -z [etc]" line there . Reboted, even. No help. in /etc I have (as root) made a file 'bash.bashrc.local' and entered the stuff there, too. So Where should one put these preferences (and the noclobber thing and the command to prevent CTRL-D closing the konsole window, and the possible commands for the prompt to automatically show pwd) ..in order them to work? The 'set' command tells that my shell is bin/bash, and that (!) my editor=/usr/bin/uemacs (and that the same editor is used for visual and fcedit). The uemacs editor does work, when started with the uemacs command from a console. A while a go I changed my login name in KDE - could that have made some mess? If I remove vim (=uninstall it) the 'edit foofile' command does nothing. The command 'shopt -o emacs' produces this response: emacs on whether I run it as root or in a user's terminal. Thanks on any hints on this supernaturalish thing! I'd like to learn vim but do not like a gun being put to my head this way... DW / Mike

FATAL: Error inserting fm -- invalid module format

Dear All, We were developed a block device driver on linux-2.6.x kernel. We want to distribute our driver as a RPM Binary. We are using the SuSE 9.1 with 2.6.5-7.71 kernel. We build the RPM file using the fm.ko file on SuSE 9.1 with 2.6.5-7.71 kernel where fm.ko indicates our Block Driver module. When I try to run the RPM file on a different kernel version it has given the following error message. FATAL: Error inserting fm (/lib/modules/2.6.4-52-default/kernel/drivers/block/fm.ko): Invalid module format As I know the error message indicates that I compiled the driver under 2.6.5-7.71 kernel where as I am trying to insert the module in 2.6.4-52-default kernel. My question is: Is it possible to compile and build a .ko file with out including the version information? (i.e. I want to build a RPM file using fm.ko file which was compiled using 2.6.5-7.71 and to run the RPM file on a different kernel versions.) We are not very sure of how to achieve this. Kernel Woes: Comments, Please!

I am running two different machines, a two-year-old Gateway 300L business system and an HP Pavilion notebook I use for a network station, on occasion. This note concerns multitudinous ppp problems which, I believe, can be traced right down to the kernel. Both machines are currently running SuSE 9 Pro, though I have tried v9.1 & v9.2 on both ...with disastrous results. Details follow. It seems that both machines run ppp without problems unless and until upgraded --whether completely, or just the kernel. Even a kernel-2.4.21-266 upgrade causes all throughput to cease when connected to the internet. This is the case, also, when either box runs 9.1 or 9.2 'out of the box'. Upgrades within those two versions are no help. The only difference between SuSE 9 Pro and SuSE 9.1 or 9.2 is the fact that out of the box installations of both do not completely break ppp but the throughput is extremely sporadic compared to SuSE 9. Even getting e-mail is an extremely_lengthy process. In the latest test, I upgraded the kernel-2.4.21-99-default to kernel-2.4.21-266-default on each machine and, when I connected to the internet, there was a connection but absolutely no modem throughput. Attempts to get e-mail, surf the web or any other web activity resulted in errors rather than loading or downloading anything. The file, resolv.conf, contained the proper parameters, same as any stock installation of any of the three versions. The evidence is conclusive. I have been conducting these tests since SuSE 9 Pro was released on CD-Rs/DVDs, on through the next two successive releases. I believe that any kernel beyond v2.4.21-99 is broken. I have run the tests several times, with the exact same results. The tests have also been run using the exact same modem & setup parameters for that modem. Remember, I'm taking about two different machines from two different mfrs, and the exact same results using both or either. SuSE 9.2, Emacs and AltGr

After installing SuSE 9.2, Emacs doesn't handle the AltGr key very well. If I want to perform an incremental forward search for the string '$' in the buffer by typing "C-s $", the search is aborted when I hold down the AltGr key to get a dollar sign. Emacs seems to think the AltGr key is not just a modifier. I haven't heard either that XFS behaved strangely on non root partitions. The fact that I had to replay the log on the non root raid5 partition stems from the fact that the system would freeze in the middle of file transfer. Again, root raid was causing this, not raid5 on data pool.

I can give you the voodoo 3 video card that was in it, but I would have to mail you the drivers. (not available anymore - except that maybe some nvivia drivers might work) Has some ram - I think 128, but got some extra just before I traded the boaard out that is supposed to be compatible. I would just leave the processor on the board with the fan on it. Will check it out tomorrow for you - getting pretty late here now. I would probably want some of the old stuff that is not available anymore. Music & maybe some of the old radio shows. You are the only one who knows the value of the mobo vs your disks. phpPgadmin 3.5.1-Postgresql 7i.4.5-Suse9.2

I have a postgresql database (1 tablell, 20 columns, 4000 line items and 9 views) which I can connect to from a windows machine using either OO.o Base or MSAccess using ODBC or I can connect from the windows machine with Pgadmin3. (I have not been successful at installing Pgadmin into Suse 9.2) I can also connect using Webmin from either machine. I am not able to connect via phpPgadmin at all. I get a Login error. Iset the extra_security_logon = false in the conf.inc.php that was suggested by one email on the web, no success. There was also mention of mofying the /etc/phppgadmin/apache.conf file, but there is no such animal on my machine. It is running the default Apache2 webserver. Has anyone installed phpPgadmin on Suse and gotten it to work and if so, please let me in on any secrets you may have? I have spent the whole day trying to get this to work and searchg the web with no success. Art
