suse 9.0 installation problem

hi; i am trying to install suse 9.0 over netrwork. i've tried ftp.suse.com besides local ftp servers. but while installing some packages, it freezes and nothing happens. What can be the problem ? any suggestions are welcome. Kenan.

mail attachment from commandline

Hi everybody, How can I mail an attachment with either the sendmail (from postfix) or mail (from mailx) command? The relevant man pages don't mention attachments, but I'm sure there's some fancy piping or something that would allow this. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Strange 'login' behaviour

Hi! I have a strange problem with the "login' command on SuSE 8.2 1. I can log on the console and with ssh with a user errrr let's say 'hector' :-) 2. When log on as root, and I use the 'login' command (either on the console or ssh), I'm not asked for the password and get logged out. I didn't find any error message I searched the whole day in the man pages, in the SuSE db, on internet, but I didn't find anything about login rights or login problems :-( Does anyone have a clue? It's _very_ annoying since I need to have the login command to work to setup a ppp dialin server :-/ -- Christophe Greisberger

migrating to 2.6 kernel

I'm looking into migrating from the 2.4 to the 2.6 kernel under SuSE 9.0. Since it comes with it I'm assuming there really isn't too much difficulty to do this. Are there any caveats or problems in doing this? My main problem however is the potential security vulnerabilities and/or just plain improvements. If I move to the out-of-box 2.6-pre kernel, will suse have newer version available from the online update tool? How about just for getting a stable release of the 2.6 kernel instead of the 2.6-pre? Even though I'm doing this just on my desktop, I still like things to be stable. I'm not much into having a half buggy system to work on. Anybody know anything about this? Thanks. -- David M. 1)Well, I don't have problem #1 below when I'm logged in as root! (I use the same MSN and AIM log ins that I was using under my user account.) Any ideas why this would be? I"m using the same box. Also, MSN never worked on either before I installed the SSL stuff today, so the fact that it now works for both makse me believe I'm using the same build. Thoughs, comments, questions? I obviously want it to work properly under my user account, because having to switch over to my root console just to use gaim seems very excessive and slightly dangerous if any unknown security holes currently exist in gaim. 2)#2 below never works anywhere, anytime for me in Gaim. kopete crash when closing chat window (SUSE's kde 3.2 binary)

Hi, Sometime, kopete 0.8 (included in SUSE's kdenetwork3-3.2 binary) crashes when closing a chat window (MSN or Yahoo chat window). Has anybody who use self-compiling KDE 3.2 experienced the same? 1) This is really weird. I finally realized after much reading (and pain) that I need to get SSL installed to make MSN happy in Gaim. Done. I can now get in MSN (and have always been able to get in AIM). HOWEVER, I've noticed something really weird. If I have both Yahoo and MSN set to log in automatically (with passwords and everything)., I get in AIM about a second or two before MSN. As soon as MSN connects, it totally kills Gaim. In other words, I can't run both. Individually, they work fine, but not together. Very baffled. Thoughts? 2) Okay, I've essentially given up on getting Yahoo to work in Gaim 0.75. A rather fortuitous series of accidents enabled me to catch an actual compromise of a password yesterday. I found some useful information by running the KNewsTicker for the first time ever. That in combination with some other evidence suggested _VERY STRONGLY_ that one of my passwords had been compromised. Fortunately that password is virtually useless to anyone. STH

Printer problem.

I hope someone knows the answer to this, and I suspect that many have the same problem. First, the hardware, which is an Epson Stylus Photo 2200, which will print up through 13"x19, or roll fed. I'm using SUSE 9.0. Printing is GREAT with Gimp, although the preprocess to the spooler is VERY slow. Gimp can work with roll stock or sheet stocks, and has them all listed when you choose what the print is to be printed on. Now, OO, KWord, nor any other application has Super B (13"x19") listed, nor 11"x17", nor roll stock, etc. ALL apps REFUSE to print properly on Super B, choosing to print 8.5"x11". Using Yast to config the printer deffs, there's NO problem defining the printer stock sizes, etc., thus the entire system SHOULD use the same info.....logically anyway. There appears to be something inherantly wrong in Linux, as others on a newsgroup have the same problem. Any solution? Restart your X after YOU X patch or ...

I just had an interesting experience with my system. There is a YOU patch for X, if you haven't noticed. After I applied it, I continued to work in what I had opened (XEmacs). I went to close one of the XEmacs windows (frames for purists) and wham! My X restarted all by itself. I will therefore advise that you close your apps before applying the patch, and restart X for yourself. STH

Strange problem with K3b...cannot change write speed

Last night I went to go use K3b to burn another DVD. HP 3550 Deskjet

I hate this printer!!! I asked the list a few days ago if someone has managed to install this printer on a SuSE8.1 fully patched box. Someone recommeded to use the HP 5550 driver, however, it didn't work for me. I do not care if I can print with it from SuSE. What my main concern is to be able to print from Windows since this printer is available via Samba. Any other ideas? Thanks guys! Chris PS: The printer has a USB connection. YAST sees it but no driver for it. I have already tried and downloaded the hpijs.rpm file, untar it, run ./configure but there is no make file generated as the instructions say.... I hate this printer!

SUSE 9.0 - Only root can mount USB memory sticks?

Hi, I am using SUSE 9.0 and I realised that I can not mount my USB memory stick as a normal user. (The whole system worked perfectly under 8.2...) Here are the simptoms: When I connect the memory stick, KDE shows the icon (/dev/sda1) on the desktop. When I try to mount it, nothing happens, only the "Mounting" window appears and stays forever. If I "su" to root and try "mount /dev/sda1" no reply at all, the command does not exit. On the other hand, if I login as root to the system, everything works perfectly. More than that, after logging out as root then logging in as a nurmal user, the memory stick starts to work perfectly! I would appreciate if someone could give me some advice, Thanks, Sandor Laza

To anyone: Is it possible to get false readings of needed updates when accessing this function? I have already installed on my computer a particular rpm that YAST keeps on saying I need but yet will not install as it claims error in the install stage. What is that supposed to mean??

192 Kernel Breaks VMware?

We know that VMware doesn't (yet?) support SuSE 9.0, but we had no problem running VMware Workstation 4.0 in 9.0--until the latest 192 kernel. In the past, we used to able to update the vmware kernel modules after updating each kernel (and sources), and they would load fine. We did this by shutting down vmware and then going into the /usr/src/linux-2.4.xxx directory, run make cloneconfig and then make depp && make clean. (We already installed the km_vmware package). Next, we'd rebuild the vmware modules from the /usr/src/kernel-modules/vmware directory by rnning make -f Makefile.module and then running make -f Makefile.module install. But when we go to restart the vmware services, everything now fails to load. Any ideas? Thanks! Mark -- ______________________________________________________________ L. You probably need to specify for the MBR to be written to the main drive and not the USB drive. I have ran into some problems with scsi drives installed and IDE as well. My guess is that you wrote the MBR to the USB though and it didn't like that, if you have an internal drive as well? X Font Server configuring in Linux

No response so far, and I give it a 2nd try, as I am sure there is someone with knowledge/experience with configuring the fontservice :; The X Font Server (XFS) is the only way to provide antialiased fonts such as freetype to most X Terminals, according to the "Connecting X Terminals to Linux mini Howto" section 4.5. I have extracted the following two configuring steps, which should be done before starting the font server: 1) Enable the XFS font server to accept remote XDMCP request in the /etc/X11/fs/config file by commenting out the following line: # no-listen=tcp 2) Verify that the X Terminal and X host are broadcasting and listening on the same port. The default port used in /etc/init.d/xfs is 7100. According to the "Linux XDMCP Howto" section 2.6 p.8, etc/X11/XF86Config has to be edited by changing the line FontPath "unix/:-1" to FontPath "unix/:7100" However, I cannot find this line in XF86Config on SJDS/SLES8, only a list of fonts. Should I place this line for FontPath port in front of this font list, or does SLES8 use other config files for this setting? At last, according to the Howto, the command 'chkfontpath --list' should check out what fonts are available. Send mail and Envelope from

My messages from my Linux box are getting blocked by this list, I believe this is because my envelope header is from jshaver@comcast... instead of J_shaver... I am sending the mail from a SuSE 8.1 box (a different computer than is addressed in my other post), where my account is jshaver, my Comcast user ID is J_shaver. My mail configuration is Mutt and Sendmail. How can I set up Sendmail to fix my user name and make it J_shaver? I am relatively new to Linux, and don't know where to go with this.
