I'm looking into migrating from the 2.4 to the 2.6 kernel under SuSE 9.0. Since it comes with it I'm assuming there really isn't too much difficulty to do this. Are there any caveats or problems in doing this? My main problem however is the potential security vulnerabilities and/or just plain improvements. If I move to the out-of-box 2.6-pre kernel, will suse have newer version available from the online update tool? How about just for getting a stable release of the 2.6 kernel instead of the 2.6-pre? Even though I'm doing this just on my desktop, I still like things to be stable. I'm not much into having a half buggy system to work on. Anybody know anything about this? Thanks. -- David M. Running fine here on a 2.6.3 vanilla kernel from www.kernel.org. Make sure you get the latest modules-init-tools also. -- +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ + Bruce S. I didn't try kraxel kernels nor the included kernels in the SUSE pack but I found interesting reading the README and KNOWN_PROBLEMS on SUSE ftp in kraxel directory somewhere here: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/kraxel (by memory, could be wrong). SUSE 9.0 should be 2.6 ready with the exception you should upgrade mkinitrd. I had just 2 minor problems: 1) without lvm support compiled in the kernel SUSE lvm script try to access the CD at boot and won't go farther. 2.4 kernel series didn't show this problem even without lvm support. You've to disable lvm script with yast 2) mouse module doesn't autoload. I still didn't thought an elegant way to load it at boot without interfering too much with SUSE init scripts Remember to run generate-modprobe.conf that should be all... I remember ;)
