Weird output /var/log/messages

Suddenly I am getting output I do not understand from the kernel. It is happening while I am online (firewall running, or not) and I am wondering if anyone may be able to tell me what this means! 2.6 Kernel and LVM

Has anyone successfully upgraded to a 2.6 kernel while using LVM? I upgraded using the 2.6.1 rpm (the kraxel rpm). My mkinitrd was already a higher version, and I installed some LVM2 rpms. When I boot to the 2.6 kernel I am unable to mount any of my LV's. vgscan and lvscan both display everything, but if I try to mount anything I get an error "mount: /dev/Volume00/lvusr is not a valid block device". lsmod shows that dm_mod is running, but I can't seem to locate an lvm module in the /lib/modules/2.6.1-3-default. Can anyone tell me what I am missing and what I need to do in order to correct this? Thanks, Dan Dan

Problems with smbmount command

Hi all. I do have a quite strange and unusual problem. I want to connect to a samba drive within my domain (same network) but when I call the smbmount with the command line: smbmount //myServer.domain.com/drive$ /tmp/test -o username=domain\\user Linux asks me to enter my domain password and the fails with ERRDOS - ERRnoaccess (Access denied.) And I know that my password is correct. When I use the smbclient command with: smbclient //myServer.domain.com/drive$ -U domain\\user and then the same password it works. To see whats really the problem I used another client within my network which runs on Redhat Linux and there it works. ! I guessed that the settings for samba client were wrong but I copied the settings from the RedHat PC (smb.conf) to mine and it still didnt work at all. A difference between these two PCs is that Suse9.0 comes with the samba client version 2.2.8-Suse and Redhat runs on 2.2.7. Does anybody have a clue where I can adust something ? thanks, detlef

ICS between two Linux boxes

I am a recent convert from Mandrake to SuSE (I didn't like Mdk9.1, never mind 9.2) and, unlike Mdk, I cannot find any wizard to help one configure ICS. I can ping both ways but cannot get online w/the client box. DHCP leaves me w/no IP address and, though static works for two-way activity, the internet remains out of reach. Can anyone please point me to the proper How-to? I have already consulted the manual and it seems to be silent on this issue. If it is there, I've been unable to find it. Thanks... ...CH

You can just run a ping job that pings once every 3 minutes (if you found that 3 minutes was the cutoff interval). ping -i 180 -Q 4 <some.remote.ip.address> This uses almost NO bandwidth, fools most provider side cut-offs (due to the -Q 4 bit) and can be started at boot and left to run. My Friend, you made a simple question that made me thing. I found the solution to my problem. Having FTP working was not my final objective. FTP is still not working for non-anonymous logins, but my Informix server is now listening well to outside requests. Informix was up and running but I have used "localhost" in my sqlhosts file when the right one is "<linuxbox>". Thanks for answering my mail. Also, you might make sure that you have the appropriate shell and home directories set up, but you would then see this problem on a Konsole or Xterm. The problem could very well be a bug in one of the login scripts. It is possible that /etc/profile /etc/profile.local are messed up. ADSL and dial up.

Hi I have ADSL with UKFSN set up with the modem set to be activated on boot. I want to be able to use a dial up connection occasionally from the same box. Using SuSE 9.0 is there a simple command I can use to disconnect from ADSL whilst I use dial up and then bring ADSL back after that dial up session ? The ADSL modem is connected via ethernet using dhcp if that helps. Thanks Mike

Unable to login on VT

Hello! I have a problem with logging on my VT's. When I press ctrl+alt+F{1,2,...,6} and enter in "login:" line "root" (or another local user login), the screen is refreshing and nothing happens. Help me recompiling the suse kernel please!

I have try to recompile the suse kernel but i was a pain.. after about an hour of feature remove ( ^_^ ) i am unable to mount root filesistem.. whaaat?? i do the following make cloneconfig make xconfig (and there i remove any thing i'm SURE i don't have!) make dep make clean make bzImage then copy the bzImage in /boot and reconfigure grub make modules make modules_install then reboot ( before rebooting i've try also mk_initrd without any success..) at the boot i see a lot of unresolved symbol and then a reiser_fs unable to mount root filesistem yes i use reiser on my root partition and off course it still in the configuration of the kernel (as module first... then as core..) but ... don't work again... someone can give me a guideline on howto compile this kernel? a kind of make this but DON'T remove this.. etc... if you need special checks on my config i can post it PLEASE HELP ME!! I WANT TO RECOMPILE MY KERNEL ^_^ tnx Andrea

Nvidia Drivers and SuSE 9.0

Also i have problem with "nv" and "nvidia" driver with suse 9.0. Problem with nvidia driver have also when i try in slackware9.1 or if i install kernel-2.4.21 and up... Advice on new H/W to run SuSE 9.0

Due to my old K6/2-500 machine having such problems running recent versions of SUSE (keyboard won't work under X although it is fine in text mode). I have decided it is probably time to upgrade. I already have a spare Athlon XP1800+ lying around so the spec I've given below will use that. Basically I suppose I'm looking for assurance that the thing will work OK. I never used to worry but my recent experiences seem to indicate that SUSE Linux has become rather fussy about the hardware it runs on. I'm going for cheap and cheerful. I'm not too interested in having the highest spec machine. I've been quite happy with the performance of my K6/2 machine. I'm not bothered about 3D graphics either, as long as X works thats OK by me. Seeing that a lot of people are having problems with NVidia cards and that my existing machine also has an NVidia (TNT1) card I thought I'd give a Radeon a try. CPU: Athlon XP1800+ Mobo: Epox 8K9A7I RAM: 512Mb Graphics: Sapphire Atlantis Radeon 9200 SE 128Mb (how about a Radeon 7000, even cheaper but will it work ?) I'll be reusing the case, PSU (400W) , drives (6xHD, 1xCd, 1xDVD) and Promise Ultra-100 controller from my old machine. TIA Sean.

KAMix doesn't display volume control

Hi My soudcard is recognised and works but I can't change the volume. I've tried restarting alsasound and KAMix but the volume control slider is greyed out, in fact it doesn't display at all. I can change the volume in Yast however. Card model: Crystal Semiconductor: SuSE-9.0 Any ideas? Thanks, Steve.

KSCD.

I have had problems with my KSCD here in SuSE 8.2 Linux. It was started every time I have booted my computer up, and as such it has searched for a media in the drive making 100's of lines in my messages logfile. If I had no media in the drive, KSCD did claim about the lack of a media, and this also was repeated a huge in the messages logfile. I did a killall kscd, and went out of KDE. Then this kscd behaviour stopped, and the computer speeded up. But now if I have an audio-cd in the drive, I cannot get kscd to come up. How can I tackle this ?. I don't know if Prime95 is available for Linux. I think is free. It has three tests in its "Turture test", the default one is the third one that focuses on memory. Run it. If you get an error, most likelly your memory is bad. I had a problem like that; the store I got the parts from said they run a mem test and that it was OK but it was not. Is there a way to just ERASE the hard drive completely (and allow SuSE to repartition it, etc.) so that when I insert the installation CDs everything will start from scratch? Hi, Anyone have tried this kernel (2.6.1.-3 from SuSE people - Kraxel dir) on SuSE 9? Anything else required except upgrade of mkinitrd and refreshing modules.conf? PS. It seems kernel 2.6 requires upgrade of alsa from 0.9 to 1.x. I have installed alsa 1.x from packman dir with current 2.4.21-166 kernel, and got loud endless noise from soundblaster which I have been unable to eliminate. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.
