How many machines for 8.2 Pro?

We recently had a question about making copies of 8.2 CD's to give away not for profit. I have a similar, and perhaps ignorant question... I purchase the SuSE 8.2 Pro boxed set from SuSE. I installed it on my system from the DVD and I'm very happy with it. My nephew, a college student, is going to be buying a system I used to use at work and I'm wondering if I can install 8.2 Pro on there also, or if that's contrary to license. I found and read the license, and it mostly deals with mods to YaST2 and stuff like redistribution. I'm just wondering how many machines I can legitimately put it on. I know the GPL and probably SuSE allows for an arbitrary number of systems, but there is still a question about the software like MainActor and any other proprietary software. Is there someplace on the site that covers questions like this? Thanks!

gcc3.3 and 2.95.#

Hey Group: I am running SuSE8.2 with GCC3.# and it seems that every program (except ytree-1.77) fails to compile. About every one of these were done under SuSE8.0 without a headache. However, under 8.2 no luck. Galeon and Mozilla problems under Gnome

Hi Just installed SuSE 8.2 on a Dell Inspiron 7500 laptop. Nothing special about the install just the Default packages plus Gnome and some console based utilities like mc. When in Gnome I am trying to use Galeon and it just spawns new copies of itself until I either cancel the root process or the system runs out of resources. Okay I think, try mozilla, but this does not start at all - it appears to create several mozilla processes which sit around for 10 seconds or so apparently doing nothing and then they end. Anyone got any Ideas? Proftpd 1.2.8 RPM (or src.rpm) for SuSE 8.2

Hi, I'm planning to use broadband (cable modem). My ISP suggests Motorola SURFboard SB5100 (http://broadband.motorola/noflash/sb5100.html). The broadband link will be shared by 4 users (laptops), and we plan to use private IP for all 4 of us. Is this possible, or is it one of us must use public IP? Successful upgrade from 7.3 to 8.2

A couple of weeks ago I upgraded my Athlon XP workstation from SuSE Linux 7.3 to 8.2 using the upgrade tool on the Installation CD. It went smoothly and I made some notes on my experiences. ********* Good news ********* These things are fantastic :- Scanner ====== My UMAX 2200 USB scanner was recognized by sane (xsane) right out of the box. Joystick ======== My Saitek X45 USB Flight Controller worked right out of the box. No configuration at all. It was even calibrated nicely. Spamassassin ============ Now that SuSE have packaged this, it is well worth the little bit of effort to get it configured and running (but be careful with procmail) wvdial ====== Users can no longer use the wvdial command to go online with PPP. But no worry, qinternet is a great new tool (that uses wvdial behind the scenes.) 3D == XFree86 4.3.0 now installs drm 3D graphics on my ATI Rage Pro 128 card out of the box. So actually I needed to comment out the 'Chipset' option in my XF86Config because it was not compatible with the chipset strings in the new driver. ATI's fault imho for having dozens of different chipset ids for identical model numbers and functionality. (3D still locks up the card occasionally - at least with Racer set for lots of effects - the racer default - so if you have an ATI Rage 128 and prefer rock solid reliability, don't play 3D games and use the frame-buffer which has 2D acceleration afaik. I reduced the resolution, fog and fx settings in Racer and it works like a dream now.) sound ===== alsa 0.9 has a more sophisticated mixer for my Turtle Beach Santa Cruz than alsa 0.5, and is reputed to give much better support overall. I look forward to playing with it (it still sounds nice.) The machine no longer mutes and zeroes all the sliders on reboot, instead restoring the prior settings. And no more worries with missing modules (unlike a recent 2.4.18-SuSE kernel on 7.3) *************** Quite good news *************** And here are some steps on the learning curve (nothing too difficult):- Local mail relay - sendmail versus postfix, and procmail adventures =================================================================== I fixed a few problems with sendmail but was stumped by a mail loop it caused (mail bounced back to itself.) I gave up and replaced it with postfix. Unlike sendmail, it does not call the procmail mail delivery agent by default. There is an /etc/sysconfig/postfix option, POSTFIX_MDA, to change this. procmail gave me a little more trouble -- with my large mailbox. Again there was an /etc/sysconfig/postfix option -- POSTFIX_ADD_MAILBOX_SIZE_LIMIT which I needed to increase. SuSE's manuals no longer recommend using a mail server on standalone machines, and it is not covered by the installation support (purchase Advanced Support if you need it.) So I am pleased it still works for me. ** spamassassin - be very careful when installing this with postfix or sendmail, especially if you already use procmail - there is an old rule from the analog world "always read the directions before using power tools" - there is a thread last week that I started which delves into the consequences :-( Printing -- cups versus lpd =========================== YaST2 didn't seem to know that apsfilter should be replaced by lpdfilter (neither did I as it wasn't mentioned in the upgrade section of the manual - it is in the printing chapter of course.) Even with this done, lpd still wouldn't print so I switched to cups using the yast2 printer switcher. After running the switcher, YaST2 immediately ran the Printer Configuration Tool, which appeared to hang on "Initializing CUPS server..." 9% but /var/log/cups revealed the problem with tcp_wrappers Oddly, putting cupsd : ALL EXCEPT LOCAL in /etc/hosts.deny did not fix this (I guess I do not understand hosts.deny fully.) But putting cupsd : 127.0.0.1 in /etc/hosts.allow woke up YaST2 again (I did not restart YaST) and it made a fine set of print queues automatically (nice to see it using the stp drivers out of the box for my Epson Stylus Color 600 - the uniprint drivers that yast chose on 6.3/7.3 were great but the stp drivers from the gimp-print project are fantastic.) I could not print from my Windows laptop until I noticed that YaST2 didn't make a raw queue by default, but a few keystrokes in YaST2 made one. lilo ==== I am sure this is my fault. My /boot and root are both on IDE logical partitions. YaST didn't notice that lilo was installed on a logical partition (not recommended), and tried automatically to install lilo on the extended partition. This didn't work. Rerunning lilo from within YaST, this time specifying MBR, fixed this in seconds. ********************************************************************** Hope this is interesting for those following on the upgrade trail . I am really pleased with my updgraded workstation (which is also a simple print server, sshd server and masquerading router.) No time yet to review and comment on all the upgraded applications and libraries, but you will probably only here about those when I need help :-) David

Psion Handhelds

Hello! I am a proud owner of a Psion Handheld (series 5mx pro). Unfortunately, they are not sold anymore and nor software updates are made anymore. Short question: How do I transfer the data on the Psion (the language of the Psion is EPOC) to Linux? It is mostly adresses and schedule date, I have found no software or tools. I do also appreciate indirect help (where to look, who to ask) a lot. Thank you! Tobias

RPM pre and post install scripts

I thought there was some sort of pre and post install scripts that could be run when installing RPM's. Specifically, I installed the mod_frontpage RPM, but the stanza to activate the module in /etc/sysconfig/apache didn't get added. I wound up installing the apache_contrib RPM, and suddenly that stanza showed up, allowing me to turn on the extensions. I would have thought there to be a script that appended various sections onto the existing config files, but I don't see anything like that when looking "inside" the RPM with Midnight Commander. Perhaps the installation process actually just replaces them, but I don't see an /etc/sysconfig/apache file in the apache_contrib RPM either. My question, then, is how does this work? How does the process of installing the apache_contrib RPM wind up editing /etc/sysconfig/apache? Furthermore, why doesn't the mod_frontpage RPM have this same feature that would add the section it needs? (Why is it left to the apache_contrib RPM?) Thanks and regards, dk

tcic and i83265 pcmcia problems

I was wondering if anyone knows a way to force 8.2 to use i82365.o for pcmcia instead of tcic. It looks like a change from previous versions, 8.1 would work. TCIC always fails during install with the following message in VC3: PCI bridge probe: not found. Intel PCIC probe: not found. Databook TCIC-2 probe: not found. insmod tcic using /modules/tcic.o /modules/tcic.o: init_module: No such device I didn't get any replies to my first message, so i'll try again.

Sound system produces constant screech

I have a SB Live that I've been using for some time now without major problems. I'm not sure exactly when this started, but sometime in the past month or so it started producing a very loud screech that begins as soon as the sound modules are loaded. Have others seen this? STH

OpenOffice segmentation fault

Following a reinstall of 8.2, I cannot get OpenOffice to start - the terminal window on the first start complains of a segmentation fault. I tied uninstalling it with YaST and then replacing it with the latest version (1.0.3) tarball. On running "./install --prefix=/opt" it returns to the prompt after a second or two, with no messages, and no installation has taken place. Interestingly enough, I downloaded the StarOffice 6.1 beta the other day and it won't install either.The installation window comes up for a couple of seconds, then disappears. Any suggestions? disconnecting users from VSFTP

Desktop Intrusion Protection

My desktop Linux system (Suse 8.1) is connected to a DSL line with a fixed IP address. What is the best way to protect my system from intrusion? Would it be the SuseFirewall? What about Snort? Is Snort basically a reporting tool or can it too be used to block intruders? Thanks Matt

And unfortunately this cannot be changed while the machine is running - you have to reboot and set the right parameters (at least the last time I checked). Check your /boot/grub/ment.1st file. You'll see some kernel parameters and one is something to the tune of vga=761 or vga=0x317 Change that to vga=5 (most monitors support this) and if this doesn't work, remove the vga= line completely - this will throw your monitor into normal 80x25 character text mode. Not the nice imaged background SuSE provides, but at least you'll be able to see the kernel messages.

rsh, rlogin, etc.

I want to allow access to the r-commands to my system from any other system on the local network. I have xinetd.d/rsh and xinetd.d/rlogin set to only allow access from 192.168.0.0/16 and I deny access from router, in case someone faked access from my router address. Anyway, I used to be able to have: + <userid> in my ~/.rhosts file and I could access from any other machine, provided: my userid is the same on both client and server machine, and that machine is on the local (192.168.) net. However, having installed SuSE8.2 Pro, I can only get password-free access if I have the host's *specific* IP address in the .rhosts file. This can be a pain because of DHCP issues... Anyone still use these servers and able to give me some help with this? I have checked the permissions and the ownership of my ~/.rhosts file and it is as it should be. I've read the docs and they indicate that what I have should work w/o a password. Any help appreciated. -Michael

ISDN dial-in server configuration

Hi, I'm trying to set up a SuSE 8.0 machine as an ISDN dial-in server. The (few) documents I found seem to indicate that a working dial-out setup is necessary for this, so I tried to configure one. I installed SuSE Linux 8.0 Professional on a Pentium III computer with a Winbond compatible ISDN card. The card is recognized and testing with minicom indicates that it's working. I configured a local provider we have in-house, running in a Cisco 3640. However, when I try to use kinternet to connect to it, it doesn't work. When I choose "Dial in" in the menu , nothing happens. The kinternet log says: ------- SuSE Meta pppd (smpppd), Version 0.73 on rabanada. wwwoffle not is running Selection of interface/provider "ippp0"/"pop-mg" succeeded. Starting connection. (2003-05-26 07:24:26 BRT) ------- Messages in /var/log/messages, /var/log/localmessages and /var/log/isdn.log appear normal. Running the command suggested in Yast2 for manual dial gives me the following: rabanada:/etc/isdn # isdnctrl dial ippp0 ippp0: No such device Running ipppd by hand tells me: rabanada:/etc/isdn # ipppd Sorry - this system lacks PPP kernel support. Check whether you configured at least the ippp0 device! I don't have any experience with Linux (I have Solaris administration background) so I don't have any idea on what and where to check what's going on. The ISDN documentation I found on the Net is mainly in German, and I seem to miss some common knowledge in Linux to follow the ISDN4Linux faq. I'd appreciate any pointers to documents or any help on how to debug this. Sound server fatal error

I installed suse8.2 with ' Normal Setup' on dell dimension 8250 with sound card [SB Live! Value]EMU10k1X. I used Yast to configure the sound card. the sound funts were saved in the directory /usr/share/sfbank/creative/ by "Install Sound Fonts" from the original Soundblaster driver CD-ROM.
