Problem, a two line document takes 5 to 6 minutes to print. I had set the printer up through Yast and test printed, printed right out fine. Anything else I send to printer takes forever to print no matter how small. Anythig through KDE, OpenOffice they have the same result. Printer Epson Stylus Photo 780 USB Cups see's the default as Epson Stylus Photo 780, Foomatic + gimp-print (recommended) Description: EPSON Stylus Photo 780 Location: USB printer on //EPSON/Stylus%20Photo%20780?serial=NC0LL0104171643300 Printer State: idle, accepting jobs. Device URI: usb://EPSON/Stylus%20Photo%20780?serial=NC0LL0104171643300 In the KDE Control Panel Printers the default printer (named normal) is set to fax. All of the other options are empty. If I try to go into KDE printer adminstrator mode it locks up. Usually the default printer is lo something, I have no idea what normal means? It seems I have no printer setup in KDE and have no idea how to get yast to tell KDE I have a printer. I looked in the cups script and port 631 is open and I think that is the port the printer goes out on. Yet I think it goes to never never land and back. I went into localhost:631 printers I have draft draft_gray high high_gray normal normal_gray photo phot_gray veryhigh veryhigh_gray All set with Description: EPSON Stylus Photo 780 Location: USB printer on //EPSON/Stylus%20Photo%20780?serial=NC0LL0104171643300 Printer State: idle, accepting jobs. star acl problem

Hello! Today I started to use star on SLES8. I wrote backup to tape with following command: /usr/bin/star c --file=/dev/st0 -acl -H=exustar ./ But when I try to restore sometimes star can restore acls: backup:/BACKUP/test # star -x -acl -H=exustar --file=/dev/st0 star: current './' newer. star: Invalid argument. Cannot set ACL 'user::rwx,group::rwx,group:belbank:rwx #effective,mask::r-x,other::---' for 'apps/belbank/BACKUP/client/'. star: Invalid argument. Hey Group: I made a mistake. The problem (chroot) I mentioned earlier was a mistake I made. The drive was not clean. fsck.reiser fixed it. The error message coming from bash about libncurses got me. No keyboard on bootup in 8.2. Help!!!

I installed 8.2, but whenever I reboot I get a message that configuration of my drives has been updated, and once SuSE loads, I no longer have a keyboard. The only way I've found to get back into the system is to use the 8.2 installation disc to "update installation." Then my keyboard works until the next boot. Any suggestions? (Using a usb keyboard, by the way) Thanks in advance! -Trent

DES vs. MD5 passwords

I was just wondering why SuSE defaults to using "plain old" DES encryption for passwords, instead of MD5, like most other distros. I'm not a crypto guy. I've been meaning to get _Applied Cryptography_ for awhile now, but I still haven't, so I don't know the difference. I just like using a 10-place password for root. A quick Google search doesn't turn up anything on this. Does anyone know why this is the situation? Does anyone know why I should or shouldn't care? Thanks, dk

8.2 boot.iso

I was testing the boot.iso installation yesterday and was unable to make any headway. Their is a failure at the Floppy IO, during the YAST configuration where it is checking packages. Please fix this. I am currently installation Suse from a friends Personal Edition. At least this way I will be able to see what Suse looks like. However, it's a pretty grim start for what is proclaimed to be one of the better distributions out there. What surprises me most is that this boxen has been used to install everything as a test bed and it is here that it just can't get started. The CD installation is extremely unstable on the XWindow GUI. I'm not sure that I will even be able to finish, but time will tell. I have not tried RedHat on this boxen yet, but I have tried Slackware, Gentoo, Debian with success. -- Men have a much better time of it than women; for one thing they marry later; for another thing they die earlier. -- H.L. Newbie Question: Windows, SuSE, and a Crossover Cable

Trying to get my old Windows 2000 box to talk to my new Linux box with the hope of accessing the Linux box via VMC. Followed the instructions in the SuSE 8.2 version notes for VMC, and started VMCSERVER from root command window, or whatever you call it. Set the IP of the Windows ethernet port to 10.0.0.1, on the Linux box to 10.0.0.2, and while I can ping from Windows to Linux, it will not work the other way. VMC display thing won't work, either. So far I have disabled passwords and encryption on Windows, disabled the various Microsoft networking things, and identified the Windows machine in the routing table on the Linux box via YaST. Still nothing. When I get home tonight I will try to see if the SuSE firewall is the problem. Fumbling in the dark, here... Can anyone help me along to the next step? All e-mail sent to this account from free e-mail providers (including Hotmail, MSN, Yahoo!, and AOL) from addresses which I have not previously cleared, will be deleted from the server.

I recently downloaded the evolution rpm patch for 8.2 and used yast to install it. But it didn't seem to install and evolution remained at 1.2.2 Does any body know if there is a problem with that patch? I have a suspicion that it is a patch for 8.1 and will not work for 8.2 Any comments? -- Cheers, Serge Naggar

NIS/NISplus/LDAP

When I was installing Suse this morning I was greeted with a question about doing remote authentication with these three options. Are there any of these which are both available on Linux and not open text passwords. I think NIS is open text and LDAP is available on Linux, but I don't know about a combination of the two... -- On a clear disk you can seek forever. -- P. Denning

Good morning folks! I've been having an extremely bothersome problem with my machine, and i'm hoping for some guidance - This occured while running vmware. There was an error within that program, and then the system went nuts and crashed. yast says that the external interface if one has adsl is ppp0 and eth0 would be internal but when i do ifcofig -a i dont see ppp0 there is eth0 also my external interface then?

KDE mounting

First, I have to state that I hate automounters of all kinds. To me, they just get in the way. Perhaps this leads to my problem, but, if so, I still need to find a workaround. I'd like to get rid of the icons on my desktop, because all I use them for is to mount my various media. There was a KDE util included in the Maroon Toque distro that sat in the "system tray" and kept track of mounting and unmounting drives. I can't find this in SuSE. Do I need to install another package? Is there a new program that does this, but is called something else? Thanks, dk

ApacheSSL on SuSE 8.0

Hello. I am trying to bring ApacheSSL up on SuSE 8.0. I set HTTPD_SEC_MOD_SSL to "yes" in /etc/sysconfig/apache and ran SuSEconfig --module apache. Now when I try to bring up ApacheSSL I get the following error message: Starting httpd [ PERL PHP4 SSL ] Syntax error on line 1442 of /etc/httpd/httpd.conf: Invalid command 'SSLEngine', perhaps mis-spelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration I have been unable to find an explanation. HELP : tweaking/building NVIDIA from tar

Hi all, As you know, I have a past history of struggling with my NVIDIA card. Few days back, I succeeded in installing my (new) Riva TNT2 on windows in fully acceledated mode. My old card had old drivers CD, which would not work very well with this new card - same model NVIDIA claimed. So I took the new card, installed old drivers, then installed new drivers - that came with this card, and all went fine! Now I have my new card working in windows 98, with full accelerattion, with updated drivers. Now the real problem. I used the nvidia unified installer, and this screws up my display in a big way with constant hangs. I used the installer to install/ldconfig/depmod etc and then manually tweaked XF86Config to load nvidia module. X shows nvidia splash, and then hangs as "enlightenment starting" animation starts. Please review my game plan before I try tonight. Also give suggestions... 1. I shall try disabling "AGP Fast writes" in the motherboard BIOS and check for performance and system stability in both windows and Linux. 2. If this does not work, I shall have to ditch the installer and use NVIDIA_kernel and NVIDIA_GLX tar files from driver-version-4191 [which, I think, is the latest driver which permitted tar/gz sources for part of interface]. These files can be tweaked for two things - - whether the card has SG/SDRAM - whether I want 4x AGP enabled on my Via motherboard So I shall try all these options. MY Questions for you How am I supposed to do the installation. In the sense, first I do the make, make install in kernel module directory, and then in GLX directory. In between, am I supposed to run "ldconfig -v" and "depmod -qa" and at what time and in which order? And whether I am supposed to change something in /etc/modules.conf or will the changes in /etc/X11/XF86Config suffice? I have no XF86Config-4 file on my SuSE 8.2. Is that abnormal? installation from boot.iso

I have run into a number of problems with the boot.iso CD for installation of Suse 8.2. I've managed to solve most of them, they are mainly problems with the README file. The largest being the "linux install=ftp..." statement. It should be changed to "install=ftp://IP_ADDRESS/directory". I'm not certain that this is the only problem, as some of the results have been a little inconsistent. But I've managed to patiently work around each of these in turn. However, all that aside, I am genuinely stuck at one point in the installation process. After the kernel is downloaded, I am presented with a screen to select the language and other installation options. I picked the language, English, and let the installation process select LVM, but drop USB stored devices (I don't have any). At this point, the back-end screens (CTRL+ALT+F3?) brings up an IO Failure on reading the floppy device and everything hangs at this point, for many hours. I never had a floppy disk in there. Didn't think I needed one since I have a CD for the installation. I can't find anything that looks like installation directions beyond this one README file in the ftp directory. Does anyone know if this bug can be worked around easily enough? I'm not really sure how to procede at this point. I'm also hoping that there is more documentation on how to use YAST and Suse in general. I'm more familiar with other distributions (Debian, Slackware, Gentoo) that have more documentation made readily available. I am assuming that I am just not finding it in the right place. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you.

Samba and OS-X

I'm trying to use Samba to serve a filesystem to some OS-X machines. The basic connection works, but a lot of the files I'm trying to migrate have a "*" in the filename. Linux obviously supports that if you handle it correctly. Is there someway in Samba to make it work? Thanks Greg -- Greg Freemyer

Can't boot ghosted harddisk.

I have Ghosted a harddisk (disk to disk) with SuSE 8.2 and Grub as bootloader. The system, on the new harddisk, will not boot and with systems that had Lilo I just booted from a CD and ran lilo. Now with Grub I'm not able to do the same, and reading the SuSE and Grub info has not clarified what to do. Any suggestions Thanks in advance Bo Jacobsen

Since some days I have an error at the address 209.3 from my 256 memory chip. Before running to the computer shop in order to get me a new chip I know that I can reduce the memory use at bootup by just adding mem=209MB. In lilo I had experience in the past that this info could be added in the append line. For Grub I have no idea where to include it. Just adding it in the line for the SuSE boot does not take effect. Somebody knows where to include the info?

cannot access site with web browsers...

I'm getting an error that I've never encountered before... I'm trying to access the 3ware RAID controller web interface on a system that I administrate (on 192.168.203.250:1080 - a local net), but when I enter that address (click on the link), I get an error dialog which says: Access to the port number given has been disabled for security reasons. I get this dialog whether I use mozilla or galeon. I know it's not a server issue, because I jumped onto my mac and was able to hit the port just fine with both OmniWeb and I.E. Therefore, there must be a security switch somewhere that I need to flip. I turned off privoxy for galeon and /etc/sysconfig is told that I have no proxies, so I don't think that's it... Any pointers?

KMail and Exchange WebDAV

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone had tried to use the Exchange2000 connector via WebDAV in KMail, and if so, what it took to get it to work. I haven't found much by googling around, so I thought I'd post here, first. -ronc
