KDE -- the missing manual

Hello. I'm a newbie (with Linux in general as well as SuSE 8.2 Personal in particular) and I have a pile of stupid questions. (I hear a chorus of groans.) Before asking them, I'd like to RTFM, but I can't find it. What do I mean? Well, suppose that I use Kbear and can't figure it out. I take Kbear's "help" (or similarly named) menu option. That takes me to SuSE HelpCenter. Nothing there about Kbear, but I believe that Kbear is written for or as part of KDE, so I choose "Application Manuals | KDE". This leads me to a page that says enigmatically "SuSE HelpCenter / KDE / Application Manuals" (of which the last is a link). Clicking on "Application Manuals" takes me to another page that reads in full "SuSE HelpCenter / Application Manuals". No information. I don't yet use GNOME, but "Application Manuals | GNOME" takes me to a page that reads in full ""SuSE HelpCenter / GNOME". No information. "Application Manuals | Manpages" takes me to a blank page. OTOH, the link to "Bash Reference Manual" takes me to a Bash reference manual. What gives? Please KISCIS (keep it simple coz I'm stupid). Thank you!

Go to your (Yast2) control center it's a listed on the "drop up" menu --- at bottom left menu bar of your screen when the control center opens go about half way down to "help" click on that - which should give you "SuSE" click on that --- it will open up a window which takes "administrator' privileges to run click on administrator -- and enter your root password (select everything) it will then load all sorts of good help stuff ---- also read Togan's manual: "Unofficial SuSE FAQ" http://dinamizm.ath.cx/ you can also find things for each package under: file:/usr/share/doc/packages which you can open w/Konqueror man (commmand) usally give good info (if the man pages for a command aren't on your machine yet, google for them) IMNSHO, if you haven't put "pin" (Package InformatioN) on your machine, do so. HI All, I have just got a new Toshiba Portege Tablet laptop. I am wondering if anyone has had any experiences with getting Linux to work on this. I last puchased 7.3 and have not updated since then. NO X after video card change

Sorry for the repost but I did not get an answer so here it goes. My video card, a Matrox G 200 went down and a replacement S3, Savage 4 was the replacement. During booting the new hardware was with the 8.1 version recognised correctly and the XF86Config was changed accordingly with Yast2 in console. After reboot I ended up in console. The grafic login did not work. Console works okay but X and KDE are out of reach. What should I do to get X back? -- ! Not on your life ! NTReader v0.36w(P)/Beta (Registered) in conjunction with Net-Tamer.

My first drive in SuSE v8.2!!

Sorry for the general post, but I just installed v8.2 for the first time. I'm on my Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop, and v8.2 discovered everything automatically except for the ActionTEC internal modem. I've got work to do there, but I was astounded at how easy this product has become. I started using SuSE at v6.2, informally then but alot more seriously now, and I have to tip my hat to the SuSE development team. There was a thread earlier about someone trying to decide on a distro, I can't speak well enough for this platform. In between bites of a steak and a sip of tea, I had the laptop up and running, printing configured to my HP Jetdirect print server, news configured, and KMail running inside of 2 hours. This from a completely formatted hard drive...... Well done, SuSE!!! -Jeff

Printer Problem

Since installing SuSE 8.2, documents sent to my HP Laserjet 1200 have been printed off center, vertically. The paper settings in Open Office are Letter, with margins at top and at bottom. Now, the bottom of the printed content is flush with the bottom of the page! Same problem with Abiword. How do I fix this? -- Dennis Tuchler <dtuchler(a)earthlink.net>

X11 Mouse cursor question

I downloaded some cursors called RedDot. I followed the directions by making a folder called .icons, then making a sub-folder called default. I added a file called index.theme and referenced the RedDot cursors. I then placed a folder under .icons/reddot/cursors which contain all the cursors. It doesn't work. Well, it kind of works. Some places I get them, some I don't. I did the same thing to my office system and they work fine. Any thoughts? I did nothing else other that what I mentioned above. Install Problems

Hi, I would appreciate any help and advice. I am new to linux and have recently installed SuSE Professional 8.2 on a new PC. The install went well and all hardware seems to have been recognised but I seem to have a problem connecting to the internet. The PC is standalone connecting via a dial up modem which was correctly identified by SuSE as Intel 536EP Data Fax Modem and on install I accepted the defaults which all looked reasonable (which simply means within my limited knowledge). The problem appears to be when I attempt to configure mail in YAST2. It asks for the outgoing mail server (I entered my ISP's smtp server name) and then the incoming server name at which point I attempted to enter the pop3 server name of my ISP. My ISP happens to have the same server name for both but this does not appear to be acceptable and gives an error. I have tried all sorts of combinations but nothing seems to work. The KInternet log reports, at best, that: "pppd died: pppd options error (exit code 2)" which appears to be conflicting information, presumably the pop/smtp name being the same. Have I correctly identified the problem or have I completely missed the point? Is there a way around this or do I need a new ISP? This whole mail and internet connection regime in linux has me completely confused and the manuals and online information appear to simply skip over the parts which are causing the problems. Is there a straight forward description of how all this works anywhere aimed at someone who simply wants to use a standalone PC with email and web access? Thanks in anticipation, Angela

can't kill X

I have tried ctrl+alt+x, ctrl+alt+backspace, and killall X as a root user under a virtual console and neither kill X, it just starts up again. I need to kill it to install my Nvidia drivers Does anybody know how to kill it George x

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=3D9944 It wouldn't have to do with Linux if only GeCAD didn't produce a very complete line of antiviruses for *nix mailservers. And they were very good too, I use RAV for postfix on my linux mail servers. Now everything related to "antivirus" in GeCAD belongs to Microsoft. Which I think means death to all the *nix antivirus product line. Even if M$ doesn't explicitly terminate it, who wants to run M$ software on their Linux machine? This is unfortunate.
