Can anybody recommend a good disk imaging pacakge so I can back my laptop up? Something like Norton Ghost that I can boot from a floppy and make a backup over the LAN would be great - I have Ghost 2002, but it doesn't handle Reiser file systems. I've tried partimage but can't get a bootable floppy that will work with my NIC (realtek 8139) Commercial software is fine, so long as it's not *too* expensive ;-) sjb

Trust Photocam

Anybody know what cfm is? The site is running a Microsoft webserver so I'm guessing it's something from them. Both Mozilla and Konqueror want to run realplay instead of showing the page. Nick

Booting Problem

I have linux installed on a system that was formerly Windows and I am having problem booting straight with LILO. I always have to be at the console to type "Esc" for the system to skip to LILO, otherwise, the system will just be rebooting since there is only residue of Windows application left. How can overwrite the booting process to that only LILO boots. Thanks

No sound with SoundBlaster Live 5.1 PCI card

I installed SuSE 8.2 on my desktop that has a SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 PCI card. It appears to be detected correctly (using the EMU10k1 driver) and the mixer settings are unmuted and at reasonable settings, however I'm not getting any sound. Remote Dialin with pppd & mgetty

Hi All I am trying to set-up a remote modem dialin to a SuSE 8.2 system so selected remote users can access the Internet through the Linux box. Now as usual I am having problems in getting this functioning. First I uncommeted the mgetty line in the inittab file & reloaded it, so now the modem answers. Now I want to configure the dialin. By putting my username & password in Kinternet on my remote system I get the following when I try to login. pppd: CONNECT 57600 pppd: --> Carrier detected. VIA8233 Sound chipset

having a lot of problems regarding sound in SuSE - i have an on-board VIA8233 Chipset (VT8233 is the SuSE driver) on my Asus A7V8X-X motherobard. I was able to play sound in XMMS - but NOWHERE else - and then i tried updating my driver - and now everything in my system is trying to use a VIA8235 chipset (this is not what i have) even XMMS - and nothing works now..... i am trying to play sound through ALSA - is there another way i can get my soundchip working? i read that the VIA chipset has a few problems on the ALSA project home page. Has anyone had trouble with this before? I'd also like to get system sounds working - is this an ALSA issue? or is it still my chipset? [OT] Stuttgart

Hi everyone, This is complete [OT] for a lot of people so please send the replies "to me only". We will be moving to Stuttgart by the beginning of September and I need recommendations for couple of things. 1) DSL connection: Which provider gives Static IP with no restrictions on setting a web/mail/ftp servers. I am using a flatrate ADSL in Turkey so I am looking for a similar service with no restrictions on the traffic amount and type. 2) Since I have never been to Stuttgart before and our friends in this town are average Microsoft users, I also need suggestions on computer hardware and software shops, that are knowledgeable and trustworthy, the last thing I want to hear is how secure is Windows software even with default installation. Software repositories

Just got finished installing SuSE 8.2...very nice. I was wondering if there was a repository such as apt-get in Debian or urpmi in Mandrake for SuSE packages that I could use. I have found usr-local-bin.org in the archives for some packages that I want, but wanted to know if there was something to address other software as well as helping with dependency resolution. Is the mcs.anl.gov mirror coming back?

I was downloading 8.2 from ftp://mirror.mcs.anl.gov, but it's been nonresponsive the last couple of days. I tried switching mirrors, but the timestamps are different, and I don't want to screw things up. Is it experiencing technical difficulties, or did it just go away?

I have also had frequent sound issues with my sound. Is your card running through ALSA? If yes - open up Alsamixer and bring the MAster, PCI and Surround volumes up to around 74ish - this made mine work (the 74 setting is cos it sounded better) If that doesn't work, try changing the driver your system is using - like try using aRTS or OSS - pretty much you have to play around with it untill it works. I tried editing .Xdefaults...no help. I booted into Gnome and they work fine there. When KDE starts up, I get the cursor I want for a brief second then it goes back to the original. Most of the icons appear except for the main cursor...e.g., I'm in kmail now (because I can't get Evolution 1.4 working correctly) and when my cursor moves over the menu, it switches back to default. Some of the icons show up all the time...which is correct, and some are the default icons. Can't figure it out for the life of me. Recovering Data on ext2

Is it possible to recover raw data which has not yet been overwritten after a partition has been reformatted. I accidently re-formatted my home partition and it is now my root partition but still has quite a bit of free space on it. If anybody could tell me what utilities could read the free space for any fragments of data, it'd be much appreciated. I have lost a lot of emails and I would like to get them back even if it is only in raw data format. Trouble is now, I don't have a home partition. I only have a root partition. Therefore I cannot unmount my root partion (SuSE has an annoying habit of doing this). I wouldn't have erased it if my mum hadn't been shouting at me at the time. new install problems, yast2 failures.

A. my screen flickers constantly, with random garbage shooting across as lines. Looks like a too high screen resolution setting but this is NOT fixed by choosing a lower setting! the graphics card and monitor are correct in sax2. B. Yast2 goes into infinate sleep <defunct> when i try to use it to select packages that aren't installed. It upgrades just fine and I've already done so. I'm using SuSE 8.2, installed 6-12-03 and updated 6-13-03 using Yast2. I'm using a Pentium 400mhz machine, 8 gig drive, realtek nic, and ensoniq ES1371 sound card. C. oh yes, the sound card refuses to install. I have the same problem in all other linux distro's and i've tried 12 others. Time to buy a different card? The only thing I've successfully done is a manual update to qt3- 3.2.0 which was the only recommended fix for yast2 problems that i could find on the internet. thanks!
