Anyone have problems setting UDMA settings on Compaq Laptops?

-- Truth: Malice may attack it; Ignorance may derride it; But, in the end; There it is I cannot get the HDD in my laptop (Compaq Presario 3015US Toshiba MK6022GAX). This Drive is a 60GB 5400RPM UDMA5 drive. In Windows it sets to 5 fine but in Linux (I have recompiled the kernel with multiple different options. This is long but please read on and see if anything can be done. In order to get more detailed information about grub I was trying to use "info grub" and got only the information that the command was not found. Somebody know what I am missing in my setup? How do I get info to work?

Anyone know about rtsp protocol??

First of all, I'm running Mozilla-1.4rc1 on SuSE 8.2. Using Mozilla, I'm trying to access a live stream from GUA4DEC. Currently, there is no stream available. However, when there is, I am unable to access it. The link is: rtsp://193.1.31.232:554/broadcast/live.rm I'm able to access other Real media. When I try to access this, I get the following message: rtsp is not a registered protocol This would seem like a protocol of which Mozilla is unaware. My question is, how can I "register" this protocol with Mozilla? Any help is greatly appreciated. Rick

mount cdrom, error: cannot read superblock

Dirty code......(OT)

Ok....it looks like most, if not all of the "dirty code" that SCO has identified is in: JFS, NUMA, RCU, and SMP. I'd like to know if SuSE has taken at look at all this and what do they have to say about it. IBM, so far, has simply make a denial but nothing else. This is not looking good people. I have checked the log file, and for the connections from the local network ie 192.168.1.3 trying to start Xwin, the entry in the log file is UNAUTHORIZED. I can run telnet sessions ok, and the Internet on the PC's is ok (using the linux box as the DNS server). But if I try to start Xwin (Xwin -query MyLinuxBox) Xwin starts but no login, if I stop the firewall it works great?. Also in the /etc/host file I have inserted entries for each pc ( it wont work without these entries even with the firewall off): 192.168.1.3 host3 192.168.1.4 host4 and so on. Up to now I have run this network for about 10 years using SCO (up to 5.0.4), I changed to SuSE version 8 about a year ago, and I have a full range of class "C" addresses, but now "IT" services want them back, but said that I could keep one; so I have to try and get IP Masquerading to work. If I switch off the firewall I loose the ability for the local PC's to obtain an internet connection. Warning: I'm a dumb newbie. I did try to Google (etc.) for an answer to the following, but failed. The last time I read up on these things, it was thought to be better (for the computer, anyway) to leave a computer on all the time than to turn it on and off once a day. Under that assumption, mine's left on. We do occasionally have power cuts, and cleaners and others in this building occasionally unplug things. *Before* this happens, I'd like to have some idea of what it would entail with a SuSE 8.2 setup. Would I be greeted by a join-the-dots exercise ("Linux was terminated improperly; log on as root and run incomprehensibleabbreviation"), or would I be expected to know that I should, er . . . I don't know, um, run fsck perhaps? [Deep blush] I don't even know which file-system I'm using. How would I find out?

The name suse-linux-e generally implies general discussion about all things Linux. I would suggest a new list for technical discussions (suse-linux-tech), and give the existing list over to the politics, legal issues, humor, news, and business discussions that have come to dominate the list. I am concerned that creating an off-topic list is not going to draw very much of the non-technical stuff away from suse-linux-e. mail load and spam/virus checking curiosity

I have a curiosity. O:-) On my home system, where I connect through a modem and download my email with fetchmail, and pass it to postfix + procmail + SpamAssassin + amavis, I see that the system load goes up to almost 100%, and there is a delay in the mail queue of 30..60 emails (from this list most of them, thus, small). And this is a P-IV @ 1800 with 750 Mb ram, not a slow system. What would the impact of that be on a bigger server, say, a business one? Is it worse, or perhaps better, because it is not so concentrated (no fetchmail)? -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

CUPS printing

Since setting up my printer with the CUPS system, StarOffice will not print, and neither will abiword. What do I need to do to get these to work with CUPS? When I try to install other programs (non-related) Yast says there is a conflict with CUPS and LPRNG. Should I do something about this or ignore it? Thanks for any help. Richard

What I did to get VMWare and 8.2 Personal to work

This might be old news but I thought I would post it, because of all the trouble that I had. SuSE 8.2 Personal (standard default kernel) VMWare Workstation 4.0.0 build-4460 First of all, during initial install of 8.2, I chose to install the kernel sources, Unknown to me that the sources are not included in the Personal edition. So I got them from the SuSE ftp site, file name was (kernel-source-2.4.20.SuSE-62.i586.rpm). Once the kernel sources were actually installed, I removed VMWare4 and re-installed it via the rpm. Then I got the error message, "the kernel-source specified does not match your running kernel, no problem so I searched the Support Database and found this: "Symptom When you execute the script vmware-config.pl, some error messages are displayed. Cause The header files 'version.h' and 'autoconf.h' differ from the kernel's current header files. Solution Execute the following commands as 'root' user at the command line: cd /usr/src/linux make cloneconfig make dep clean As an alternative, this approach is also possible: cp /boot/vmlinuz_24.version.h /usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h cp /boot/vmlinuz_24.autoconf.h /usr/src/linux/include/linux/autoconf.h Note that from SuSE Linux 7.2 on, the files have been renamed and must be changed accordingly: cp /boot/vmlinuz.version.h /usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h cp /boot/vmlinuz.autoconf.h /usr/src/linux/include/linux/autoconf.h After doing this, you will be able to run the installation script vmware-config.pl without problems." I chose to use the cp command, and all is now working. Sorry if this is all old news to everybody, I just wanted to try and help those who might be having difficulties.

Samba - mass user entry

I need to add about 1000 users to the system (migrating from Novell to Linux). If I have to add them all manually then I guess that's what I'll have to do but it would save me a LOT of work if there was a script or some other method available for adding mass quantities of users. Ideally, something that would grab the names from a text file, add them to the system and give them a temp password. I have searched google and gone back quite a ways in the list archives and haven't been able to find anything. But your subject says samba I don't know of a way to mass add samba users without writing a script on your own, but there maybe something out there.
