Black screen when previewing avi files

Hi, I was trying to preview some avi files from the web page of our lab: htttp:rfierro.okstate.edu/marhes/multimedia.htm and I can only see a black image and hear the sound of what is happening, meanwhile when I connected from a windows terminal I was able to see the image. Does someone has an idea what is happening? Thanks Jose

Kernel Compilation Problem

Kernel process works fine until I issue make modules_install then I get the following: depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.20JARED_2.4.20.4-062803/kernel/fs/reiserfs/reiserfs.o depmod: reiserfs_permission_locked Can someome give me an idea about what's happening here? -- "Turd Ferguson. New xfree update and MPlayer

Hi, a couple months ago, I posted in this list that MPlayer playback is too slow using "-vo xv", which made me use sdl at the expense of the image quality. With the new update on xfree86-server, this is resolved, as long as the MPlayer gui/menu is not used -- perhaps it's the animated text, but I've tried with another skin without the animated text, and it still slows down the playback. Upgrade to SMP kernel

At the time of (YaST based) installation, my server had a single CPU (though dual capable) and got installed with k_deflt. (btw,shouldn't the SMP board been detected and k_smp installed? should/could I have done sth specific to have made this happen?) Now that I have installed the second CPU, what is the most straightforward way to go about upgrading the system to a SMP kernel? Would simply uninstalling k_deflt and installing k_smp via YaST do the trick, or is there more that needs to be done? Tx in advance, C- __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! Move SuSE 8.2 from hda to hdb - Grub Problem

In the past I was able to install a new version of SuSE in hda and then copy it to hdb, modify lilo.conf and fstab and rerun lilo. I'm trying to do the same thing but I'm using grub (default boot loader). I have no problem copying the filesystem from hda to hdb. The problem comes in modifying the grub files correctly. I know that /boot/grub/menu.lst contains information required by grub and /etc/grub.conf is somehow used. ==== lines in menu.lst I have questions on ====================== color white/blue black/light-gray default 0 gfxmenu (hd0,2)/message timeout 15 <<<------ old entry ------->>>> title SuSE 8.2 kernel (hd0,2)/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda4 vga=0x31a hde=ide-scsi hdelun=0 splash=silent showopts initrd (hd0,2)/initrd <<<----- new entry ------------>>>> title SuSE NEW kernel (hd1,0)/vmlinuz root=/dev/hdb9 vga=0x31a hde=ide-scsi hdelun=0 splash=silent showopts initrd (hd1,0)/initrd ================================================================== I want to have /boot as /dev/hdb1 and / as /dev/hdb9 ===== lines from /etc/grub.conf ================================== root (hd0,2) install --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 /grub/stage1 d (hd0,2) /grub/stage2 0x8000 (hd0,2)/grub/menu.lst <<<- this line wrapped quit =================================================================== I assume all I have to do is change (hd0,2) to hd(1,0) in the above file. Can anyone please get me started on the migration from hda to hdb. This is a notebook pc with the following specicification : Intel Pentium 4 2.4 ghz, 256 mb ddr ram, 30 gb hard disk cd-rw/dvd-rom, nVidia GeForce 420 go graphics Built in modem (softmodem, hence useless for linux) Built in LAN Bundled with WinXP SuSE 8.2 professional installed "out of the box" and on first sight only the modem was not recognised. This is not a problem as the pc has two pcmpcia card slots and a pcmcia modem card is available if necessary. Regards. LW999

New printer (Please help).

Haia I just received a HP all-in-one printer psc2110. The whole setup instructions are just for M$ and Mac ofcourse. Can I just connect it and let SuSE 8.2 do the rest? Because it says ""Do not connect before instructed"" or is this just related to the M$ cdrom. Help please. -- Greetings from /bill at 169 west , 19 south. My holy cow is a penguin.

Nautilus vs SVG themes

Hi folks, I just noticed something 'interesting' about the SVG style themes and Nautilus. I discovered the problem with the Nuvola theme in the gnome-themes-extras-0.1-SuSE.ulb.2 rpm, but it appears to be affecting any SVG themes I have installed. If you in Nautilus go to Edit -> Preferences, in Views, tick 'Use Compact Layout', when you open a Nautilus window, Nautilus will 'hang' and start chewing CPU like there is no tomorrow. Killing Nautilus will put you in a vicious circle as once it restarts, it brings up a window. Not using 'Use Compact Layout' seems to cure the problem. Non-SVG themes are not affected AFAICT.
