I have reloaded the /usr/sbin/postfix and I'm unable to forward root and john mail. It's possible I'm having problems with the domain name and aliases? So, when I send and e-mail to john it's john@domainname and it's possible that I have to put that in the /etc/aliases? NVIDIA setup

Hi all, A littbe bit of help from those who have experienced it. Those who have read my emails in the past, might remember that I lost the fan on my VGA card some time back and did not know it. First it resulted in corrupted desktops on Enlightement. [Some part of video ram was burned, and when accessed, did not do well - and I could not relate this to the fan as I did not open my box then]. Later the graphics on VESA/x11 with mplayer start getting screwed randomly. That is when I noted that it was a problem with the fan. I manually replaced the fan - but probably the damage was done. I have already ordered a new NVIDIA card [exactly the same model - although the card is old, we get it in India, cheap and genuine]. I downloaded the driver installer from NVIDIA's site. It detected the [broken] card correctly and installed drivers/libs for it. HOWTO says to use sax2 after being done with the "installer" and I did that - to enable 3D support. When I test the configuration without 3D support, I can configure X and save settings. When I enable 3D, the test server gives nothing but a WHITE screen and the machine hangs. My deduction - the card is really screwed and the best is to replace it. My questions - Can I simply plug in the new card [same model] and retry sax2? Or should I plug in the new card, run installer again, and then try sax2? Are there any issues with running the NVIDIA installer twice on the same machine? building a Linux PC (a bit OT)

Hi everybody. My home desktop PC is finally beginning to die - the hard disk is failing, I want a faster processor, etc, so I've decided to build my own. I think I'm up to this - it'll teach me a lot, and, for financial reasons, I can pirate some stuff from the old one and gradually upgrade. Having had a good look around at various sites, I have some ideas, but I'd appreciate some input on components. My preference is for AMD, probably an XP 2100+ processor, and I'd like serial ATA, but I can't find much info using that in Linux (I'll be running SuSE 8.2 Pro and have seen Adam's post also). This will be a home machine, will need to do a bit of gaming (for my daughter) and I'll probably have to dual-boot with Windows XP, which I'd prefer to put on a separate drive. On looking at motherboards, I thought the Asus A7N8X was probably a good bet, but I think someone on this list has some problems with it. problems upgrading

I made the mistake of trying to upgrade from 8.1 to 8.2 instead of a clean install now I am paying for it :-) I host a domain at home on my cable modem connection, 8.1 was working fine I had an imap, pop3, ftp, and webserver running. I was using UW imap server, and postfix for smtp. After the upgrade postfix is still working sort of. It is accepting mail for users but not for any aliases. And Imap/pop3 just refuses my username/password as incorrect. And /var/log/mail is full of these errors May 7 10:04:17 www imapd[6149]: imap service init from 24.116.41.132 May 7 10:04:27 www imapd[6149]: Command stream end of file, while reading line user=rob host=24-116-41-132.cpe.cableone.net Any ideas? DNS Question - advanced RTFM question

I run a BIND server with a number of cnames and A records. A few of these hosts have dynamic IP addresses. What I want to be able to do is to segment my main zone file such that some of the A records are in separate physical zone files: For example: main zone file for domain is: foo.bar A subsidiary zone file might be fubar.foo.bar containing just the A record for fubar, and the appropriate serial number/expriation times et. al. Right now, fubar.foo.bar is a CNAME for hxx.xx.xx.xx.cablemodem.net. In the future, I want to allow those hosts to check their own IP addresses, when they detect a change, upload the new ip address to the server, and a cron script on the server will update the zone file and restart named. I could easily do this now with the main zone file, but my partner is nervous about that since we run the risk of trashing the main zone file. Yast text mode and printers

I'm trying to set up a printer in Yast (SuSE 8.2 Pro) on a server in text mode (why would a server require X?). According to the documentation, I should be able, at the command line, use the command "yast2 printer" and go from there. However, (don't you just hate lines starting with THAT word?) I get the message "no such client module printer." On my workstation system, I can type the command and get yast in text mode with the printer module no problem. How yast missing this module for the server and how can I fix it? Mark

What does the evaluation CD gives you?

I was just wondering about the SuSE evaluation CD. I've never used it, and since I'm at the end of an expensive connection, downloading it to have a look isn't a great option for me. What does it give you? Does it give you a complete-ish SuSE environment running purely from CD (and which could be used as a rescue disk in a pinch), or does it require an amount of hard disk space, and give you a limited SuSE installation on disk? I've always assumed the former. NTFS problem on 8.1

I've come across a problem while helping out a customer. I'm trying to recover most of a vital email file from an IBM Travelstar that's broken. It's reporting "sector not found" just over 100Mb into the file. The plan was to read all the accessible sectors and write them out to a new disk. I have a C program that will do this, using lseek() and read() to get each block in turn, skipping the blocks that return an error. The trouble is, the kernel never returns when it hits the bad sector. The machine's not in front of me at present, but what I'm seeing in /var/log/messages is four or five times it logs the "sector not found", then it resets the drive, then it tries again. Because it's stuck in the kernel I can't kill the calling process even with -9. It's not just my program, because it does the same when using the cp command. 1. Is this a bug in ntfs support? 2. Whether it is or not, is there anything I can tweak to make the kernel return an error to the calling program instead of looping for ever when it hits the bad sector? copying suse installation to hard drive

hi, i want to copy the suse linux 8.1 installation files from the ftp server to my windows hard drive so i can do an SMB install on my other (3) machines. what exactly should i copy from the ftp server? the entire i386 directory or just the i386/8.1 directory? thanks...
