Hi, I installed a wireless card to use my DSL modem through an access point. My PCMCIA card it's ok but when I try to configure a DSL module with YAST, it give me only ethx card available. Why I can't use wlanx ? Thanks Andrea

Total mental meltdown over IPTABLES rules

Hello all! I must have post X-mas mental block or something.. But no matter how i read the IPTABLES pages and MAN's... How the fck do i write a rule to BLOCK a IP on the INSIDE net. That is i want to prevent one machine to use the internet at certain hours. (Kiddies past bedtime) And also, how do i drop the connection if it allready has established traffic out to internet. I tried to flush the iptable but apparently allready established traffic stil got thru.. So. What ruleset do i use to simply disconnect the specific IP? Adding programs to KDE menu

Hi all I remember at least in SuSE 8.0 there was a program that did search the HD and added programs directly to KDE menu. Now with SuSE 9.0 I can't find that SW anywhere.. But I don't remember even the name of it.. Help anyone? TIA Jaska.

Cannot connect some networking product

I face the problem that I cannot connect /telnet to some network product (Printer Server / ADSL Router, etc.) from SuSE Linux. But I can connect from Windows Station. I have no idea about this problem. Is the IP configuration problem in SuSE Linux ? Please advice. Best Regards, Andy

nfs question

I have a really annoying problem happening to my Sony Vaio laptop. It has a Xircom PCMCIA network card. I just loaded 9.0 on it, and mostly things are going well. The problem is that the nfs service will not start on boot. It always (100%) returns a "Network Unreachable" error. To get my nfs to work I have to log in as root and run "rcnfs restart," which works all (again, 100%) of the time. I've looked through /etc/init.d/rc3.d/ (I'm using runlevel 3 to avoid the startup graphics and login screen) to figure out how I could load something sooner, so I would have a confirmed network connection before calling nfs. Logging in as root to manually load nfs is a pain. Any ideas?

external serial modem problem in SuSE 9

Hi there, I bumped into a stupid problem. I can't make SuSE 9.0 system recognize modem on a serial port. I can use this same serial port with a null-modem cable as a terminal for an Ultra5 box successfully. I can use this same serial port to sync my Palm. When I connect a modem (tried both USR 56k and Hayes Accura 56k) whith a straight cable, I got no response in minicom from the modem. Lights on the modem are very strange too. SD and RD are on all the time and minicom considers connection to be online. On hangup (Ctrl-A H) lights blink and then no response again. ATZ (or any other input) returns nothing. Hard Disc as Installation Boot Disc (SuSE9.0)

Hi All I have a slightly weird situation where I am trying to install to a machine (old IBM laptop) which has no floppy OR CD. I tried putting the hard disc in a desktop machine and doing an installation, but even with careful configuration, it got jammed half way through booting. What I was thinking of doing was creating a single ext2 partition on the hard disc and dd'ing the contents of the boot CD (boot.iso from downloaded version). Assuming that I can get it to boot, I can then run a networked installation using a PCMCIA network card. The problem is the fact that this works with the isolinux bootloader. Can anyone tell me any way that I can get this to work? Cheers Matthew Smith

Hi All, I boo boo. I edited the GRUB conf file in YaST and now it won't work. I tinkered and tinkered but finally just did a fixmbr with mt XP CD so I could boot to something. I tried booting to the SuSE fix but didn't know enough about Linux commands to do what I wanted. Before I did any tinkering it booted to a grub prompt: GRUB> Tried many things here but no good. I even booted with Knoppix 3.3 and found the file I think I needed to fix but it wouldn't allow me to. Didn't have permission. Anyway, I want SuSE back .................. Help Thanks Russ

Using dvd burner on Windows machine

I've successfully mounted a DVD burner which lives on the W2K machine across the room from my Suse 8.2 machine, but I cannot get K3B to see it. I mounted the dvd burner to a mount point which I made, /media/windows/dvd and when I try to point K3B at it it says, "Could not find an additional device at /media/windows/dvd" Can anyone help? Actually, I took a look at the page. I also have the same difficulties here. Since I usually SSH into a gateway box then ssh in to the servers from outside it normally wasn't an issue and was back burnered. This is what fixed it for me: # To disable tunneled clear text passwords, change to no here! PasswordAuthentication yes #PermitEmptyPasswords no I un-remmed the PasswordAuthentication yes and it works perfectly with putty and telneat. And then put them back together when I'm done editing? openoffice mime types

I clik an OOo file in 9.0 and get it unzipped when all I want to do is edit it. I have a ticket open on this with SuSE but get the standard reply like I used to do with red hut pizza. I have daily YOU's. Is there a cheap and cheerful solution to solving this on a 20 box lan? And if I *do* have to enter every box (ssh or WHY) what should I do? My college director say's hel'll help me if he knows it's the latter ;-) Please help. Steve.

Haia I'm using SuSE 9.0 and KDE. I want to try Gnome and at the Log-in screen I tick "Gnome" but no Gnome comes up. The KDE splash screen appears. Hi I have suse 9 running (gnome desktop) on a T21 thinkpad. unfortunately I cannot get any connection with my palm, even after setting a link from /dev/ttyS0 to /dev/pilot. ssh problem with passwd on SUSE 9.0

I assume sshd works in general for SUSE 9.0? I have just tried to use the ssh daemon for the first time and it is not working for me. In /var/log/messages I'm getting: "Dec 29 14:23:23 david sshd[20290]: Failed password for root from::ffff:10.0.1.100 port 1995" What else should I check? FYI: With both boxes I can connect as a normal user via the console and sux to root. No problems, so I know I have the passwords right. Thanks Greg -- Greg Freemyer

I had heard great things about the orinoco cards, and actually I don't recall ever seeing a post on "why won't this thing work?" for those cards so that is probably a good way to go. I am personally using a linksys v.3 card, which I did get to work, however I had problems with the prism2 drivers and had to use the ornioco ones (I'm running 8.1 prof. on a vaio laptop) so I guess that'd be another reason to go with the orinoco card. I have already to set the 192.168.1.1 as the getway with no success as far as the ip 192.168.1.1 is not pingable (from a networked winpc). The WinNt which acts as a file server owns the 192.168.1.2 Any ideas? I'm looking for a tool (free to use) for making incremental backup of some directory on my personal webserver. I've made a bashscript lunched via cron using tar, but tar is not realible as a backup solution..
