Try using xmms, and select the diskwriter output plugin. It gives excellent quality and is really fast.

you could try audacity, it's in the Suse distro since 8.x IIRC ( I know it was in 8.1 and .2 but do not remember if it was in the 8.0 version. It *is* a graphical item tho, rather than commandline... If what you want to do is burn mp3's onto a CD audio, the easiest thing by far is to use k3b, which will automagically convert your mp3's to wav and burn them in one operation.
