Probably it is ok to remove nullOK? Unable to Download Patches

SuSE patches existing versions of the software as not to break deps by other software on the system. The updated version of SSH for the SLES would be 2.9.9p2 but a patched version..since SLES is based on SuSE 7.0 and that's the same version of OpenSSH. I know it's confusing and I'm not sure I like it, but it's how SuSE does it. It's been a major topic on the SuSE Security list for the -ast few months. ::think we know. The more I know, the more I know I don't know . . . As you can see by the date below. These packages were posted on Aug. 13th which is a month after the major OpenSSL bug that people are still talking about. No matter how many versions of Slapper or what new tools come to exploit the SSL problem. SuSE's patched it...or at least they've patched to the current known bug set. I would suggest having him subscribe to the security list and if he is even the slightest bit worried that he doesn't know what he's doing. He should post. They are really good people on that list and as long as the question is security related. They'll help him. As far as information on YaST2..on that version of SuSE I never went near it. It was to new for my tastes and often didn't work as well as I would have liked. I stuck with yast1 in this case. You should have information on that version in the system. tomcat 4 strangeness....?

Hi, I have two servers -- one running tomcat 4.1.10 with SuSE 8 and the other running tomcat 4.0.3 on RH 7.3. I am seeing a strange thing with my java apps being served up on SuSE and I really want to make SuSE the production platform, so I am hoping I can get some help. Does anyone know of issues in 4.1 of tomcat vs 4.0? Is there an issue with SuSE? Is anything fixed in 8.1 of SuSE? The problem is fairly simple -- on a secure link of tomcat, certain web pages get served up with part of previous pages. In other words, as you cycle through (and this is all java, no apache, just tomcat serving java and xml) pages, some of the pages bring up old pieces of previous pages. If I restart tomcat, it fixes itself for a while. The strange part is, on the lower version of RH and Tomcat, it does not occur. I just don't want to start down grading haphazardly until I get a better handle on it. And no, there is nothing in any of the jakarta logs to indicate an error. thanks Kat

Having another Linux installation on another disk

I have just installed another disk, sdc, on my SuSE Linux 7.3 system. I have installed Red Hat 7.3 on it, since I need to test some software I am writing. I need to be *absolutely* sure it works with the libs that come with RH7.3. After the RH7.3 installation, I restored my lilo, so that the system booted as before, and the RH7.3 installation was just lying there on sdc. So, how do I make lilo understand the new situation? The new disk has been partitioned as follows: sdc1 /boot sdc2 swap sdc3 / I intend not to let the two installations "see" each other, but I temporarily mounted /dev/sdc1 on /newdisk and ran /sbin/lilo with the /etc/lilo.conf below. This didn't work. I can boot to SuSE 7.3, but when I try booting to RH7.3, I just see: Booting Red Hat 7.3......... and nothing more happens. Something must be wrong with my /etc/lilo.conf entry for the new installation, but what? Is it that just temporarily mounting the /dev/sdc1 and running /sbin/lilo won't work? After update Glibc rpm problem...

Hello, I have updated the glibc (glibc version 2.2.4-75) library's on my SUSE 7.3 system in single user mode. After the update I even run the command /sbin/ldconfig ls -l glibc* -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 7626435 Aug 11 12:14 glibc-2.2.4-75.i386.rpm -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 10943302 Aug 11 12:14 glibc-devel-2.2.4-75.i386.rpm -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 9245569 Aug 11 12:15 glibc-profile-2.2.4-75.i386.rpm At the moment everything works file, but only the rpm program won't work anymore. GRIP and CD Ripping

Good Morning all I trying to make MP3s from CDROMs. IM not sure what program to use (which is the most popular)... IVe found GRIP online and included on the install cds. My problem is GRIP reports "no disk detected" There wasnt much in the grip docs except "the user needs access to the device" Ive changed perms in the propertices but still dosnt see the CDROM. Linux CD-RW Driver?

Has anyone seen any drivers for the Creative CD-RW RW4224E? My SuSE 8.0 system is recognizing it as a SCSI device....which obviously is incorrect given its a IDE device. go into Yast and there is a run level editor, if httpd (apache) is installed you'll see it there, be sure it goes on for run levels 3, 4 and 5. If it ain't in there try #which httpd. If you have to install it new be sure to use updated openssh if you use ssl. there's a write up about why at openssh.org. yast2 installer - ftp dosent wotk

Hello I just finish dowing a ftp install and forgot to install the gcc compiler... So as root i tried to install it using the same ftp (internal) and i always get: "Error pakage ftp:192.168.0.1/suse/8.0/suse/d2/gcc-2.95.3-219.i386.rpm returns a errorFile not found...." So i tried to connect using Konqueror and i could and the file is infac there any one know what could be whrong? Im using SuSE 8.0. Thanks Christiasn

Hey Dirk, run a man personal-firewall query and see what you find on Suse 8.0. zilch. matter of fact search every help doc suse.com has on the web and see what you find too. zilch or next to it. personal-firewall blocks all incoming connections... and that is about it. likewise run your normal iptables commands on see what you find on suse 8.0. zilch. no normally I don't run Suse Dirk hope that is OK with you. Unfortunately Photopaint seems to require more. I've got WP8.1 up and running, installed all the stuff needed for that. But Photopaint won't install. The installer runs, installs but exits prematurely, giving some error that I didn't understand and can't remember now. Yast online update

Hi People, I am new to this very impressive and helpful list. I have a Yast related problem. I own Suse 8.0 and last night I was using online update but lost internet connection. But the update module didnt stop, even though I clicked "back" and "abort" keys, so I killed it(probabaly a few times). Now it doesnt start. I reinstalled this module from CD but nothing. It initiliazez and then disappears. There seems to be something wrong with the "/etc/suservers" file but I couldnt spot it... any ideas? cheers -- Baris Erbas

Corel Photo Paint

Since I got SuSE 8.0 (about two months ago), I've been battling to get Corel Photopaint up and running. I have both the deb and rpm versions, neither work. I've done all the stuff suggested on Corel's website (although I suspect that's way out of date), to no avail. I even tried jumping through all the hoops that makes it work on RedHat 7.x - no go Has anybody gotten this to work in SuSE 8.0? Any ideas? Player for video CD

I know that I have worked with video cd's but after some reorganising and reinstalling my computer I do not remeber which program worked. I seem to have a memory problem ;-). Could somebody help me with the names of programs that work? -- NTReader v0.36w(P)/Beta (Registered) in conjunction with Net-Tamer.

Sax2 is bad + nVidia

Forgive me for this wild accusation. Ever since I first started using SuSE 8.0 Pro, I've been trapped in a horribly flickering 60hz display. Sax2/Yast2 detects my monitor correctly my name and model ("LG Studioworks 55V"), but the refresh/scan rates are detected incorrectly, and never twice the same. So I fix that by hand, but I'm still only getting 60hz refreshrate, even in 640x480. Even specifying a different monitor - a 19" just for kicks - didn't get any better results. Eventually I gave up and ran good old xf86config, copied the font and anti-aliasing lines from the old XF86Config file, and now everything is fine. Just thought I'd share this because I see a lot of posts about Sax2, most of them along with nVidia. Maybe Sax2 just isn't very good at configuring displays that are connected to nVidia cards? I must be very lucky, becuase I've never had any trouble with either of the four nVidia cards I have (two AGP TNT2s, one PCI TNT2, one AGP GeForce2. No problem installing and getting the drivers to work, no problem with the performance. In fact, in games like Quake3 and Wolfenstein these cards consistently perform better in linux than in windows in the same game. In Wolfenstein it's the difference between not being able to play the game and being able (celeron 500...). So maybe nVidia isn't all that bad. Yes, I agree it would be nice if they provided opensource drivers, but at least all their cards are support almost as soon as they hit the market. Oh, and by the way, I've been drooling over the ATI Radeon cards for a long time now, I'm really a fan. But when I buy that ATI card it's going to be whatever is at the top of their line. And if ATI hasn't sorted out this driver business before then, I'm going to have to use that other OS a hell of a lot more than I'd like to... Well as a for instance, I generally use access.conf (/etc/security/access.conf) to define who can and cannot login to the system either locally or remote... I can edit the file but the system ignores it.. doesn't work on suse8.0 and it's a big problem... the machine cannot go online unless certain criteria, even in hosts.allow are defined for my users. We've been hacked too many times previous, I make certain changes to my redhat /etc files for security, mostly learned 'em from bastille and the like, and they work. Except on Suse8.0. any suggestions? This system is only half secured without these files being tailored to my specifications exactly. What about hosts.allow and dey? if changes to access.conf are ignored how do I know for sure that the rest aren't going to be equally ignored? SuSEconfig only works with certain files, how do you get it to update the rest for it's memory? truthfully, i like the idea of Yast, it can disable unwanted changes real nice, but actually configuring the machine with out any specific instructions as to how to control yast is a real headache. you look in the book and it talks plenty about kmail... like that is such a mystery... I guess that's the question. right now yast is controlling the system. I need to move it out of the way, configure the system properly, then get it back in place and working according to my rules, not it's own. We'll be hacked within 2 days if I put that thing online as is.. Hello All Ive been away from Linux for about a year but I made it back and purchaced and installed SUSE 80 professional. Its a very very nice looking system. My problem is that I seemed to have screwed up the sizing of partitions. I have lots of free space but somehow managed to make / too small (go figgure) ;-) I dont know what I was thinking... is there anyway I can fix this (reclaim space from another partition)?? I have nothing on /work If I have to re install I will but would rather not the /oracle_store is on another drive and I have no data on it... When I first loaded the system it wouldn't find the usb mouse... so I added modprobe <usb-ohci> to rc.local or wherever, it went in ok because that file is controlled by yast and Suseconfig can pick it up, but as for the rest of the /etc config files, yast seems to be overlooking them, and actually hate to say it, but ignoring them completely.

No not trying to change root files as user. Trying to change root files as superuser root. Hello, I have some problem with Procmail (I use Postfix/Fetchmail/Procmail/Mutt). Normally my /home/user/.procmailrc file is configured to distribute e-mails to different directories according to sender. Yesterday it stopped distributing mails in different directories and all mails were sent to default mailbox /var/mail/user I want to check .procmailrc with vi and I have error messages: E297 erreur d'écriture dans le fichier swap. E297 writing error in swap file. when I open the file If I want to modify the file (instruction :wq in vi): erreur d'écriture - système de fichier plein. writing error - filesystem full. I remember I captured audio files (.wav files) before the problem occurred and I had a 220Mb large file in /home/user (/dev/hda9) directory. I deleted this file and the vi errors disappeared. ==== But Procmail keeps not distributing the files in the different directories like said in .procmailrc and the messages keeps being distributed in /var/mail/user (not in /home/user/Mail and MAILDIR=/home/alain/Mail in .procmailrc config file). Problem solved permissions of .procmailrc were changed from rw------- to rwxrwxr-- and I fixed it. Alain I have some problem with Procmail (I use Postfix/Fetchmail/Procmail/Mutt). LiLo and a Memory mix up

I know that my second memory (unbuffered DIMMs)stick, -one and two are both 64 MB-, is failing at 127,3MB. Wanting to buy 258MB I found that for the moment the supply of those sticks is interrupted and I have to live until there is new stock with my slightly imperfect memory. I have two questions. First: If I request KDE the use of my memory the information I am given is that my total physical memory is 126.45.as Linux found some more bad memory during booting? Or else where is the 1.55MB which is not accounted for? Second: If I want to exclude the bad part of the memory for use I heard that this could be done by inserting mem=127M in my Lilo.conf. I did and after running lilo I got following info: "unrecognised token mem at or above line 18 in /etc/lilo.conf" What went wrong. Hello, Here somme add-ons: If I check /var/log/messages or /var/log/warn I have the messages: Sep 28 23:16:21 portable procmail[1634]:suspiciousrcfile"/home/user/.procmailrc" man procmail: Suspicious rcfile "x" The owner of the rcfile was not the recipient or root, the file was world writable, or the directory that contained it was world writable, or this was the default rcfile ($HOME/.procmailrc) and ei ther it was group writable or the directory that contained it was group writable (the rcfile was not used). But the owner of files in /home/Mail/my_name is well the my_name with permissions rw------- and directory /home/user//Mail is drwx------ and in .fetchmailrc I have: poll mail.gminformatique.com with proto POP3 user cassandre there with password xxxxxx is my_name here <====== Other point: I have "no space left to finish writing /home/alain/Mail/reception_folder If I see man procmail: No space left to finish writing "x" The filesystem containing "x" does not have enough free space to per mit delivery of the message to the file. But I have 217Mb free space in /home. Thus it is not really a problem of free space (free inode?). Automount Drive at Startup - How?

My PC boots Windows 2000 and SuSE Linux 8.0. To share data files between the two operating systems, I use a separate FAT32 partition (/dev/hdf6). When I boot Linux, I'd like this partition to be mounted automagically, so that all users on my home network (all of two machines) can access files on this partition. I tried changing the parms in fstab to "auto, user" and "auto, users", and while this mounted the drive on boot, it made all the files read-only. Any ideas on how I can do this? Problems with serial port/suse 8

Hi, I have tried plugging my palm into the port (the palm works, as they always say, under a windows machine (a different one, not on this box)) and it is not recognized. I went into hwinfo and don't see the port listed. Perhaps that was a stupid place to look but it's where I looked... Can anyone give me some ideas about how to tell (a) if the port is working and (b) to troubleshoot the connection process? Thanks in advance, Nick

Hi, I want to install SuSE Linux PPC 7.3 in a Firewire hard drive connected to my iBook (Dual USB). My iBook has only OS 9 and OS X. I found an article in the knowledge base at http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/olh_ppc_sleep.html The article says I need to modify my /etc/modules.conf and add lines: pre-install ohci1394 modprobe ieee1394 pre-install sdp2 modprobe ohci1394 My question is how I do this when you boot from the installation CD. Booting from CD takes me directly to YaBoot and have no chance to modify the module.conf file. I would appreciate your help. Thanks.

"Blood-forming stem cells from adults make blood," primary researcher Irving Weissman insisted to UPI. "They don't make brain; they don't make heart muscle or any of these things." Such smugness from a scientist who should know a single study never proves anything. As it happens, a report published in Nature Medicine in November 2000 showed that such cells when injected into mice rebuilt liver tissue. A minor co-author of the piece was named Irving Weissman. Weissman's sureness was just for show. Indeed, "The Stanford paper is the one at odds with the bulk of the published literature," Indiana State University biologist David Prentice told me. While nobody knows yet just how capable non-embryonic stem cells will prove, we know they will be extremely useful because they have been. Ever hear of bone marrow or umbilical-cord-blood transplants? It's the stem cells in the marrow and blood that makes them work. They've been used therapeutically since the 1980s and now some 70 different diseases, primarily forms of leukemia, are treated with them. True, these comprise direct infusions rather than the next step of "reprogramming" the stem cells outside the body to make them into various types of mature cells. But there's tremendous progress here, too. As of last year, over 30 different anti-cancer applications alone involving non-embryonic stem cell therapies on humans had been reported in peer-reviewed medical literature. Over 100 non-embryonic-stem-cell experiments in animals have shown success against a vast array of diseases. The very newspapers that now pooh-pooh adult stem cells were only days earlier reporting on the almost-miraculous cure of a Dutch child afflicted with "bubble boy syndrome." His immune system was worthless. But it was restored when stem cells from his marrow were removed, cultured, and injected back into him. Even if blood stem cells were worthless for tissue, we'd still have other types of stem cells that have been cultivated not just from marrow and umbilical cords but also from placentas, amniotic fluid, skin, brains, spinal cords, dental pulp, muscles, blood vessels, corneas, retinas, livers, pancreases, hair follicles, and even liposuctioned fat. Catherine Verfaillie and her co-workers at the University of Minnesota's Stem Cell Institute recently published a report in Science's main competitor, Nature, suggesting that a certain type of marrow stem cells may give rise to almost any type of tissue in the body. They have isolated them from the marrow of mice, rats and people and so far have transformed them into cells of blood, the gut, liver, lung, brain, and other organs. Yet time and again a single study like the Stanford one is shoved forward to show that non-embryonic-stem-cell therapy is the biological version of cold fusion. Why? Some of the media coverage may reflect sheer ignorance. But Science and Weissman know better. They're both part of a deliberate disinformation campaign by those who see embryonic stem cell research and non-embryonic stem cell research locked in mortal combat. The worse the non-embryonics look, the stronger the case for using embryonic stem cells. With every breakthrough in non-embryonic research comes the need to turn up the screech knob on the disinformation box. That's because while the government can make grants on a whim, venture capital flows towards success. Thus almost all capital is going to non-embryonic research. Those working with embryonic cells are desperate for government funds. It's hardly surprising, therefore, that Dr. Michael D. West, head of Advanced Cell Technology in Worcester, Mass., told the AP that the Stanford study indicates "stem cells from the bone marrow will not be a practical source for many cell types needed" to treat disease. That is, it wouldn't be surprising if the AP had told you West's company does research with embryonic stem cells. Just as a 30-year-old panhandler will claim to be a Vietnam vet to shake money out of your pockets, those desperate for funding are obviously not above misrepresenting research to keep their labs running. But whatever the promises of embryonic research, the actual applications are coming from non-embryonic stem cells. The miracles they have already performed are but little compared to those of which they are capable. We dare not let that progress be hamstrung by the politics of pork. -- "And God said, let there be light ... Hi list, I'm trying to create an encrypted file system on a file. I use the description in http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/jsj_crypto_filesystem_mini_howto.html but I can not make it work. I run the following commands dd if=/dev/urandom of=/tmp/cryptfile bs=1024 count=20000 # No problem losetup -e twofish /dev/loop1 /tmp/cryptfile # No problem Password: When I write a password and press enter, the losetup command replies with the message below and I can't get any further: ioctl: LOOP_SET_STATUS: Invalid argument Any ideas I run SuSE 7.3 and have tried different kernels (the present is 2.4.19-22). SuSEFirewall2 port forwarding

Hi, I'm using a linux gateway box that does masquerading with SuSEFirewall2 using iptables. Masquerading works fine, but I'm trying to get it to forward port 80 to my webserver but it DROPs the packets instead of forwarding them. I've set the "FW_FORWARD_MASQ" in /etc/sysconfig/SuSEFirewall2, but it doesn't seem to work. I checked the /var/log/messages, and tcp 80 packets are DROPped. Please help. SuSEfirewall2 setup...

Dear all, Well I have sent a message in the past and got no reply. Thought I should give it one last try just to be on the safe side... I have a SuSE 7.2 Box set as a DHCP and SAMBA server for a small network with 3 other PCs running Win9X. I have managed to get Squid also up and running so they can log on the internet whenever the server is connected. The problem is that they want to be able to connect to other services such as mirc winmx etc. I have tried some scenarios that are outlined in the SuSEfirewall2 EXAMPLES section and have read the FAQs but have managed nothing! Can someone please help me?? Can someone please tell me what to do? What do I have to configure? Thank you soo much in advance for your help!! Chris

brand new Suse 80, sound works on login, and testing in YAst2. If I insert a cd KsCD starts "playing" but no sound. If I look at KMIx everthhing looks ok, Ive moved every setting on and off, no sound any ideas? thanks rob -- The more we disagree, the more chance there is that at least one of us is right.

Hi I succeded in upgrading kde with 3.0.3 version rpm packages simply NOT installing before the 3.0 version - the problem was the same as in the object: that stuff disappeared after upgrading rpms -. This time I had all working fine. I had some problems after installing the very last version of nVidia modules so I installed again the previous version from a non-graphical terminal. I restarted X and... AGAIN! all those things had desappeared ! >:( Only icons on the left remained. WHAT the hell has happened? Am I suppose to do anything else after I install rpm's upgrade? Please help me or I'll soon need some psichiatric cure :) Blackimp

The gtk interface is now the default interface and the wings interface is just supported, but not developed anymore. For this reason I build the gtk version rpm only. Sharing apt-get downloads

Suse 8.0 This may have been covered before. It revolves around configuring apt-get so that more than 1 PC can be upgraded with the downloaded rpms. My solution thus far is to copy the rpms from /var/cache/apt/archives from one PC 1 to PC 2. Apt (Synaptic front end) looks here first when doing an upgrade or installation. This worked ok when I updated to Mozila 1.0.1. I guess that I could use a program (rsync?) to keep these archives the same across a local network. I have also played around with the /etc/apt/sources.list file. Apt will read a URI in the sources.list file in the form rpm file:/some/directory But some other detail is needed on the end of this or Synaptic will spit the dummy. Can anyone suggest what this should be ? Do I have to use something like rpm file:/some/directory base usr-local-bin funktronics packman-i386 packman-noarch update kde gnome gnome2 mozilla ximian extra security ? The /var/cache/apt/archives will have a mixture of rpms in it. Brian Marr

Stupid question...how to unhide hidden files???

I can't seem to unhide my hidden files in Konq on 3.0.3. I had them hidden but suddenly (I don't think I chose to) they appeared. Now when I click on the menu item "Show Hidden Files" to unhide them and close the program and reopen it, they're still there. Ugghh! I even tried saving "File Management" setting. Nothing. Help! how to enable multicast in 8.0

Hi, I'm trying to enable multicast routing in 8.0. My network interface is eth0, ip acquired via dhcp. I've created files /etc/sysconfig/network/routes and /etc/sysconfig/network/ifroutes-eth0. Both contains the same content: ### 224.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 240.0.0.0 eth0 multicast ### AFter that, I do "ifdown eth0" and "ifup eth0". However, the multicast is still not enabled, because when executing "route", I don't see output similar to this: === BASE-ADDRESS-MC * 240.0.0.0 ...etc... === (note: those are taken from another computer running 7.2). Hey all, Don't know if anyone else here has gotten and used the newest Sax2 utility to configure your display yet, but you will probably be pleased. I had just updated all the XFree86 files this week and ran across a new build/version of Sax2 also. I updated the XFree86 files & Sax2, but forgot to run Sax2 to set up the new configuration files. Later this week, when my display seem to be deteriorating, I surmised that it was due to the new files and not running Sax2. I was right, but when I started Sax2 up, I was very pleasantly surprised. It is so much more intuitive now and a nice new look. Don't know if this is SuSE's or someone else's, but it is good! Nice job & congrats to the makers/developers of Sax2! Today, I was surprised that I can't email the list! I can *download* from, but not *send* to! That is, *using* KMail; if I do it using Mozilla, it's fine, but not if using KMail! If I couldn't mail *anyone*, I'd think of some configuration problem, but no, I can email anyone *except* <suse.com>! I checked and rechecked the address, though I've been using KAddressBook for a long time, and I didn't change the address there. It can't be a question of permission, because I haven't changed anything; the permissions I have today are the same as of yesterday and before. I sent a test message to the list using Mozilla, and it went fine; the same message, with the same address, using KMail, no go. I get this error: Sending failed a SMTP error occured. Command: RCPT Response: 501. This system is not configured to relay mail from <gilsonr(a)cityisp.net> to <suse-linux-e(a)suse.com> for 64.159.72.36 The message will stay in the 'outbox' folder until you either fix the problem (e.g. a broken address) or remove the message from the 'outbox' folder. Note: other messages will also be blocked by this message, as long as it is in the 'outbox' folder. The following transport protocol was used: smtp://mail.cityisp.net:25 I know what "64.159.72.36" is, but where did it come from? More to the point, how do I change it (if that's what I have to do). I used YAST2 to resize the partitions. I have used the previous version of suse and resized my partitions quite a few times using yast with no problem at all. I really do not care wether df shows the correct amount but what I can do to find out what happened. LVM takes no responsibility for updating your filesystem (FS) structure. If you are reducing the size of a Logical Volume(LV), you need to first use a FS specific command to reduce the size of the FS and make sure that the end of the LV is truly empty, then use LVM commands to shrink the LV. Trying to get the SuSEfirewall2 up and running!!

Dear SuSErs!!! Well I managed to get SuSEfirewall2 installed on my SuSE7.2 box but I have a new problem to face. I managed to get the squid proxy port up and running but since the linux box is a server for 4 Win9X PCs, I need to get them to work with mirc, winmx etc. Problem is I have spent about 6 hours on the server, read all the FAQs and the example files that come with it but managed nothing but "thin-air". Can someone please give me a solutions to this since I have the whole network inoperable till now!!! Thanx a lot in advance!!! Chris PS: I have the configuration file attached so someone can give me a better grip of the problem and the changes that I need to make.

Ever since ftp.suse.com was moved from California to Germany, YOU updates for me in the U.S. have been very much slower and sometimes will stop in the middle of downloading the patch list or updated rpms. This is very frustrating as I am now rolling out more SuSE boxes than ever, at home and at work. Are there any plans for a north american YOU mirror or is there one that I don't know about? Joystick + C-Media OnBoard + SuSE 8.0

Hi, I can't seem to make my joystick work. Following the steps in the joystick doc from the suse help center doesn't help, it seems to be out of date. I manage to load these modules that may be related to the joystick: input gameport joydev adi All modules above are loaded with insmod (input is load at boot, automatically, I think). Trying jstest /dev/js0 (or js1, js2, js3) gives me: jstest: No such device My hardware is a C-Media 6 Audio Channels, on board on a Soyo SY-K7V Dragon+, Athlon processor. Kernel 2.4.18-4GB (SuSE 8.0). The C-Media works (the audio, I mean) perfectly otherwise. It's modules are already loaded. I'd appreciate any help I can get! A.

SuSE 8.0 and FLUXBOX window manager..

I tried to install this nice looking windowmanager to my SuSE. I downloaded, compiled and installed it just fine, but I cant get it running. So far I've tried/done: I added fluxbox to LoginManager (and now I see flugbox in login-screen in a checkbox), but it never occured to me is there something else to set in Login Manager (I now run KDE and login is also KDE) I've tried to edit .xinitrc and .xsession in my homedorectory. I have added elif test -x /usr/local/bin/fluxbox; then WINDOWMANAGER= /usr/local/bin/fluxbox -aa to both, so that there would be something to catch if I select flugbox. I also have created .flugbox directory to my homedirectory and it includes files init, menus and keys... When I start my box it goes to login screen and all other desktops work, bt if I select fluxbox, screen goes black and then it returns to Login-screen. Anyone, any ideas how to proceed... I downloaded apt, apt-devel and synaptic from http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm/apt-0.5.4/ When I tried to upgrade everything depended on everything else it seemed. I'm running apt-0.3.19CVS-20011212 with Synaptic 0.16. That combination seems to be running fine, but I would like the new options in Synaptic. Hi Have just installed the (excellent) dynamic dns software from dyndns.org and am now able to serve webpages without memory constraint :-). It works fine but: I have a perl script: /sbin/ddclient and a startup script: /etc/init.d/ddclient I did a /sbin/chkconfig --add ddclient I have to type /etc/init.d/ddclient start:stop:status to interact with the deamon. As a newbie of 3 years I'm sure that this is not the way to do it. Could anyone point me in the correct direction? SuSE 8.0. Thanks, Steve.

Mysql-Max + RAID5 + Reiserfs

I set up a new server last weekend on a Dell poweredge 2300 with a megaraid raid controller configured for raid5. The install was uneventful and I took the default partition formats (/boot=ext2 /=reiserfs). However, when I tried to run mysql-max with innodb table support, the mysql service would crash with a signal 11. I didn't have a lot of time to troubleshoot it since I had to have it restored and ready for operation the next day, so I removed the mysql-max package and left mysql with the default table backend, and it started and ran fine. Does anyone know of any strangeness with the combination of Mysql with Innodb + RAID5 + Reiserfs that might cause this? webserver with dynamic IP problem

Hi everyone. I don't have a fixed IP but if I leave my computer on, I can use it successfully as a webserver. The problem is if I need to reboot. No one can find me since my IP has changed. Is there any workaround to this? SuSE 8 with the default Apache setup. Thanks, steve.

Crashing on System Halt.

I use Suse8.0 and since I installed the Alcatel drivers for the Speed Touch USB ADSL modem, in the manner suggested on the suse site (http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/configSpeedTouch.html) I have suffered irregular system crashes just after the "Sending TERM signal to all processes.." I would guess that its a kernal problem, and I would make a new one, but Im a bit lost as to what I would need to keep the modem happy. Any ideas? -- Richard Fletcher, Sheffield, UK.

I use fluxbox in 7.3 and had to do the following... 1. in /usr/X11/bin create a link to your fluxbox executable, e.g. ln -s /usr/local/bin/fluxbox /usr/X11/bin 2. Add the fluxbox to the login manager sessions 3. Add fluxbox to /usr/X11/bin/wmlist You've done step 2 already - so I guess step 1 would probably help. Not too sure if wmlist still exists for 8.0, but if it does, it should be added there also. Hello, I am a SuSE Linux 7.2 Personal user and I want to create a LiveEval CD to test 8.0 and decide whether or not to migrate to a 8.0 actual install because I am not satisfied with the support 7.2 gives to my DSL card (a D-Link DFE-538TX). Thus my question is: 1 - What files shall I put into a CD? liveeval-8.0.iso ONLY? Or should I add any other files like bootdisk, modules1, etc? 2 - Can I FTP and burn liveeval-8.0.iso into a CD using Windows ME? I ask that because I don't have internet access through SuSE 7.2 (because I've had problems having my ethernet card recognised). 3 - Are there any special steps to make the CD bootable? 4 - I understand that the .iso file has to be FTPd as a binary one. I hope that is correct. Can this FTP transfer be done using Windows ME? I have tried lots of combinations of the above and neither worked. My last resort was to find some help in a list like this one. In my honest opinion SuSE has done a very poor job as to supplying information in their www/ftp site on how to burn LiveEval disks. I am trashing away CDs after CDs because nothing that I do works. lost LVM after update

I am using suse 8.0 and lately updated my system using YOU. after updating i created 2 folders in home 1 called backup and the other called local where i keep subdirectories for downloaded software and other items. I then tried to delete them but could not for some strange reason. I later went to lvm manager to reduce the size of my partitions because most were 12% or less but after saving the changes the original values were still showing on kdiskfree. needless to say after i logged off as root the system just plainly STOPPED. I then rebooted and a whole bunch of error messages came up too many file systems mounted. At least i managed to to get to a prompt and logged in as root. the LVM directories /var /opt /home /usr are empty my other directories seem o.k. I went through the installation process of suse8.0 and the lvm manager correctly shows the size that i changed the partition but.. the starting cylinder is the same for all partitions. What do i do?????????? I have just about had it. It is a good thing that I have (sorry guys) windows running HARRY

Hi all I've used the fetchmsttfonts utility and downloaded the necessary fonts and followed instructions as stated in http://dinamizm.ath.cx/generalx.html. It looks like everything has worked but I cant get Opera or OpenOffice to use the fonts..and when I run xlsfonts | grep ttf I dont get any result. If I just run xlsfonts I'm not sure if I can see any trytype fonts or not, at least I cant find the term tryetype in the list. Does anyone have any help or hint for me? Thanks Thomas

you can get them on apt-get. http://apt4rpm.sourceforge.net/ you need .0.5.4 because the other version doesn't play well with YOU. Hello to all, Probably this subject has already been discused, but I would like to answer if it is legal to copy SuSE's CDs (I own SuSE 8.0 Personal) to a friend (actually my brother)! What about the commercial packages, like Star Office 5.2? The licence of YaST2 claims that you cannot copy and sell the program, so you can copy it without charging for it. Is it right? The SuSE's site says that you can install Linux to an unlimited number of computers! But is it legal to copy the CDs? Thanks
