1) maybe it's a good idea to tell us why apt-get doesn't work (errors etc etc
2) manually is also simple:
rpm -Uvh
ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/projects/mozilla/1.1/8.0/mozi…
a-1.1-0.i386.rpm
Just for your information: RH is not offering any rpm's for Mozilla so far as
i know.

Hi all,
Recently a friend of mine bought a 40gig drive, that his
bios couldn't detect. He was quite happy to run it in 33g
mode for now, and partitioned his disk as follows with
partitionmagic 7 for dos:
2gb - win98 - fat32 primary partition
4gb - win2k - ntfs primary
extended partition:
8gb - linux - ext2 logical drive
18gb - data - fat32 logical drive
200mb - linux swap logical drive
6gb of empty space remains until he gets a new mobo (his
current one's BIOS is the newest for it, and there's no
space for a new IDE controller)
This is roughly what my setup looks like, and it works
fine. He installed win98 and win2k, then ran SuSE 8.0
setup. SuSE saw the 6gb open space and tried to make a
swap partition in it. The the YAST2 hang.
Upon rebooting, the 18gb data partition was gone. I ran
partitionmagic to see if I could undelete it. pm told me
the partition table was "bad." With hard drive mechanic I
managed to restore the partition table, but the data
partition was still gone.
I read in one of the howtos that there is a way to
ressurect a missing partition. Make a new one over it and
then run a command (dumpe2fs or something like that) to
rebuild the filesystem.
This is only for ext2 though, so my question:
Is there such a util for fat32? I tried all the disk utils
included with SuSE 8.0 Pro, and only gpart saw the missing
partition, but it wouldn't do anything more.
Thanks
Hans

Greetings all,
I'm trying to install some packages off the cd, which has worked flawlessly
before and now I'm getting the following messages. Packages.rpm does exist,
in the indicated directory and I'm not sure why I'm having a problem.
Running stock SuSe 8.0. Any ideas? Note: I'm not trying to install bash,
but rather the kernel sources. Bash is of course already installed....
Thanks for any help that might be offered,

I setup VNC server on one machine and VNC view on the other through NFS
TCP/IP network. Can get the VNC viewer to connect, but all I get is a
black screen. The appears to be because VNC server is working with
display 1 when I need it to work with display 0. That is, I want to see
the same display on my computer that is on the other. Does anyone know
how to set this up?

In the old days (SuSE 7.1) if you wanted linux to start a service at boot time you just included i.e: START_NAMED="Yes" in rc.config.
I'd like to start named this way under SuSE 8.0, but so far no luck. Does anybody know where should I include this in order to have named start at boot time (or any other service)?
Thanks in advance.
Patrick.
This is bizarre. Sometimes the machine will boot just fine and gets through
"Starting hot-plugging services". Sometimes it boots up and gets to:
[net pci usb
and just hangs and I have to cold-power cycle the box. About one out of
every 5-8 boots it'll make it all the way through. Now, if I disable USB on
the motherboard, (Soyo Dragon Ultra KY333), it'll pass it with "failed", but
since I don't use any USB devices I'm not as concerned. However, it worries
me that this section will only work on occasion. Any ideas? I can't see any
boot log after the box hangs and I have to reset it, so I can't tell what
its issue is. I've tried enabling/disabling Plug-n-Play, etc., to no avail.
If anyone has any clues on this I would be forever in your debt.
Thanks!

Hi!
I have Suse 8.0 Pro. I use KMail as my email program. The mail and folders
are in my home directory in the Mail directory. Is it possible to access
all my emails in the folders from anywhere? Can I install a web mail
program that can make it possible? If yes, which one?
Thanks
I have been wrestling with this problem for a while and I need help.
With the computer 'idle', the available memory on it drops from around
471MB to 284MB in about a day or so (I use free to check the memory as
well as gkrellm). This happens consistently, even if I do not start X.
I have tried several things including replacing the NVidia card with a
Radeon 7500 (suspecting drivers) and running a different kernel (2.4.7).
I am considering reinstalling SUSE altogether or checking out a different
distribution. I desparately need some suggestions.
I want to install Oracle8i and Oracle9i but would like to get this
resolved first.
My current configuation:
Dell 4300
512MB RAM
Radeon 7500
SUSE 7.2
XFree86 4.2.0
kernel - 2.4.16-4GB
Let me know if there is any other configuration info you need.
Thanks in advance!

Wolfi:
A while back, in answer to my plea, you gave me detailed instructions on how
to setup an IDE DVD-ROM. Only this afternoon I tried it, and got a rub. When,
after all the preliminaries, I clicked on Xine, it opened, showing the gui
above the name in the middle of the screen. I clicked on the DVD button and
nothing happened. It occurred to me that it might be because I had setup the
link as /dev/hdc /dev/dvd, when the cdrom is set to /dev/sr0. I went back to
Konsole and changed the link to /dev/sr0 /dev/dvd. I got back to xine and it
came up, but *without* the gui! So, I can't test whether the DVD plays or not.
How do I get the gui back?
Thanks!

I'm having trouble both ripping from a CDRW using grip and using cdrecord
as a standard user. I know this is a common problem. What's the best way
to fix this, though, other than doing these things as root?
