Ext3 problems

Hi Folks: I am aware that without replacing the mk_initrd script, Suse7.3 can't boot a root partition formatted as ext3 during the install. I installed 7.3 and formatted the / as ext3. When the installation reached the error, I booted the rescue system from CD, then copied the updated mk_initrd to the right location. Then I booted the installed system, which worked. I thought for all this time that I was running ext3 until one day I noticed these boot messages: <3>kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k ext3, errno = 2 <4>VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem) readonly. <4>change_root: old root has d_count=3 <5>Trying to unmount old root ... <3>error -16 <3>Change root to /initrd: error -2 However cat /proc/filesystems reports there is no ext3 filesystem support, and /proc/mounts shows the root filesystem mounted as *ext2*. Thus, simply replacing the mk_initrd results in a bootable system, but not one running the ext3 properly. I had to mount the initrd, hand copy in the ext3 and jbd modules, edit the linuxrc script to load them, and finally now I have the root filesystem mounted as ext3. Since Suse 7.3 is old I suppose this is old hat, but I'd be happy to hear about what people think about this, and what might be a more proper way to fix it. Comments appreciated. Open Office 1.0 experiences

I installed Open Office 1.0 last week with no problems. However, when I created my lesson slides for my class on Tuesday, I created html and PowerPoint. I did not really like the html output, but it was ok. The PowerPoint output was horrible. Most of the slides were blank. I subsequently ran Star Office 5.2, and exported to PowerPoint and all the slides came out as expected. Another thing I did not like about OO is that on StarOffice 5.2, I could bring up multiple documents and align them vertically or horizontally on the desktop for easy cutting and pasting. (Normally I create a new lesson but I also recycle some slides from previous classes). Open Office create new windows. Just a minor annoyance. Problems with new NVidia drivers

Hi, Anyone else using the latest NVidia drivers (1.0-2960) noticed problems with dropping from X to the consoles? When I hit CTRL-ALT-F1 for example to drop to tty1, I get a corrupted view of the console. I'm clearly at it, and I could type, but it's well munged! If I hit ALT-F7 it takes me back to X ok... Anyone else noticed this? Error message with KDE 2.2.1 trash (SOLVED).

I got the answer to this on another list, but being the nice guy I am ;-) I thought I would share it with the list: I created a new user, logged in as that user and brought up a console. Logged in as root, navigated to (cd) /home/newuser/KDesktop and then did a cp -r /home/mydirectory/KDesktop. Now everything works! The original message is below for those that can't remember that far back ;-) **Original message: I have a copy of source that I am trying to compile (see: PDF files won't open.) that I am trying to dish in my trash I keep getting an eror message that says: Access denied to /KDektop/Trash/gimp-print-4.3.0/lib/.deps/vasprintf.Plo There seem to be a lot of files in this /.deps/ folder that give the same error message. I realize that this is probably quite a simple problem, but I have never come across this before. Anyone with any ideas? Cheers, Brian

JetDirect EX Print server :Connection refused

Hello, I installed in my network print server JetDirect Ex Plus, however when I query print queu I get mesage : lpq -l -Phplj6p2a Printer: hplj6p2a@serv1 'hplj6p2a printer' (dest raw(a)192.168.202.39) Queue: no printable jobs in queue Status: connecting to '192.168.202.39', attempt 4 at 11:34:10.469 Status: subserver pid 14747 exit status 'JFAIL' at 11:34:11.499 Printer 'raw(a)192.168.202.39' - cannot open connection - Connection refused In printcap the record is : hplj6p4|printer :cm=hplj6p4 printer :sd=/var/spool/lpd/hplj6p2a :lf=log:af=acct :mx=0 :sh :rm=192.168.202.39 :rp=raw What is wrong ? Printer drivers.

Is there someone out there that can explain the relationship between CUPS, Gimp-Print, Turbo Print, etc.? I am using SuSE 7.3 Pro and still trying to get my new Epson Stylus C80 to work. I think that somewhere, I am lacking some information to understand how printing works under SuSE. I need to understand why you need both CUPS and Gimp-Print, why Turbo Print requires Ghostscript, etc. Can all of the above coexist? I do however, realize that some of the above are GPL and others are commercial products, so we don't need to get into that. Is there a URL that will cover this? Cheers, Brian

Don't try to flatter me. I'm Swedish and thus per definition both stupid and modest.The URL http://www.sun.com/software/star/staroffice/6.0/promopackage/download.html as such won't help you, since you need a one-time-only product number. I got my product number as a subscriber of SunONE. Hopefully Sun will be quite generous with promotional downloads of SO 6.0 in the future. I suggest that you go to http://wwws.sun.com/software/download/index.html, download something, register (mandatory) and allow Sun to contact you in the future.
