Lost my root password

Over the weekend I was helping my brother install SuSE Linux 8.0 and advised him to change the root password to something of his own choosing. Well, ...that was it, the password he says he entered does not fit and the old one I set does not fit either. Now I'm stuck, as I can not remember how to start the system in an anonymous shell so that I can reset everything. Does anyone on this list remember to how to get out of this problem? -William

XDMCP (Was - Using cygwin/Xfree-86 to access Suse)

SuSE gurus, I'm trying to get XDMCP to work under SuSE 8.0 I have not intentionally setup any firewall or ipfilter type of stuff. I have found and commented out the security line in xdm-config (i.e. the DisplayManager.requestPort line), but it is still not working. I used ethereal to get a TCP/IP trace and it is showing the XDMCP UDP request packet coming in, but it shows the SuSE box sending out a "destination unreachable" packet in response. This does not makes sense because I can ssh in, and I have even added my PC into the /etc/hosts file. Is there something else I should check? Is there some kind of default firewall logic that is still blocking this? Thanks Greg >> Yes, that works great. Hmmmm, I am also struggling with this. I have the line commented out in xdm-config. Running 'X -query host1' works when run from a Linux command prompt, so it looks like XDMCP is working alright. When I try 'Xwin -query host1' on the Windows side, I get the grey screen, but also a couple of error messages on the Linux server: Date-Time host1 kdm [6498]: server open failed for 0.0.0.0:0, giving up Date-Time host1 kdm [637]: Display 0.0.0.0:0 cannot be opened This seems to give credence to the theory of setting the DISPLAY variable, but at what point should it be set for the Xwin command to work ? Kernel and glibc upgrade

Hello, I'm running 7.2 and I'm in need to move to Kernel 2.4.7 and glibc 2.2.2 I have down load both packages just needing your advice on how to go about doing this? any written instruction would be great? I'm in no position to lose any data or current configuration. Cheers, ~mn

I'm currently running a LRP packet filtering router (aka firewall) and I'd like to switch to the SuSE firewall. On the LRP box I use the same IP address on both ethernet interfaces (a bit of a hack, I know), and I'd like to do the same thing on a SuSE box. The net is half of a class C, e.g., 10.20.30.128 to 10.20.30.255 (using a phony netnumber as an example.) The default route is 10.20.30.254. The untrusted net is eth0, the trusted net is eth1. Or, pictorially, it looks like this: world--10.20.30.254----10.20.30.253 | eth0 | LRP box | eth1 | 10.20.30.253---Local_LAN Buried in the LRP network configuration script are these routing commands, issued when the interfaces are brought up: ip route del 10.20.30.128/25 dev eth0 ip route add 10.20.30.254 via 10.20.30.253 dev eth0 Can a similar setup be used with SuSEfirewall2? *GRRR* now this is not directed directly at Landy or anything, it's directed at *a lot* of people subscribed SLE, who know who they are. Would you please read and understand http://learn.to/edit_messages It is simply *annoying* sitting on a slow connection and scrolling and scrolling to find out only one line was added. Read it, learn it. It's really simple. And it's doable with *ALL* mailers out there, including Outlook (Express). Silviu, Your question is very non-trivial, so be prepared to work hard on this or to spend some $s. AOL does not honor short time-to-live requests, so any technique that depends on having rapid DNS changes is doomed to failure. If you don't care about users who connect via AOL, then you can subscribe to one of the dynamic-DNS services and use one of the multiple Linux cluster solutions to manage your failover and update the dynamic-DNS service upon a failure. If you care about AOL users: ===== If you are lucky enough to have portable IP address space, you can run BGP in your routers. (Portable IPs are IPs that can be used with any ISP. Very few people have this, but if you have a class-A or class-B subnet of your own, then you do.) The router will recognize the failure and move all the traffic to the remaining connection. Another choice is to get multiple connections from the same ISP. i.e. One from POP A, and one from POP B. Then you should be able to get that ISP to let you run BGP in your router and control which circuit you are using. BGP does load-balancing as well as failover so you get to use both circuits in both of the above. Otherwise, I recommend you find a quality co-location facility you can trust and that rent some space there. Many co-location facilities have multiple outside feeds and have their own portable IP space. That means that they handle the ISP failover situation for you. You just have to worry about keeping your servers running. Again, there are several Linux cluster solutions that can help with this. I think heartbeat and failsafe will both work in this case, and I think both are included with SuSE. FYI: I have a colleague that has worked with several ISPs in Eastern Europe if you need a recommendation for a good co-location facility. All the ones I have used are in the US.
