Updating Sendmail and Apache

I come from a UnixWare background. Running SuSE 7.3Pro with 8.0 now ordered for April delivery. Would like to use Sendmail 8.12.2 and Apache/mod_ssl 1.3.24/2.8.8 but there are so many tie-ins via rpm with Gnome and KDE and whatever that I was wondering if it is possible to cleanly remove the SuSE distributions and replace them with compiles from the source organizations? I gather I'd lose some functionality. Has anyone done this in the past? I even thought of using the rpm -U to update instead of recompiling, but SuSE rpms are not found where others commonly are - if they are available at all. FWIW, I am really rather impressed with the SuSE distribution. Overkill maybe, but then I don't come from a Windows environment and never did!!! Any insight would be appreciated. Are ATA/133 drives going to be supported out of the box in SuSE 8.0? Pleeeeeease? :) I would love not to have to compile my own kernel in order to use my 160G hard drive. -tara

My 8.0 Question

Hello all! If this is stupid, please forgive my ignorance. I have been using SuSE since 6.3 and *love* it! It has been noted that Yast will not be in this release, but Yast2 is taking its place entirely. My only concern is to the ability to use the ftp site as a valid update/installation source. Yast did this exceptionally well, however I have not yet figured out: 1.) If Yast2 can do it!? 2.) If #1 == TRUE then HOW??!! :) This is pretty much my only concern for 8.0! (not that it would stop me from getting it... ;) ~T. I'm out of my mind right now, but please feel free to leave a message.

Why can't we order SuSE Linux from the website if you're living outside Germany??? SuSE has a nice website, which promotes their SuSE Linux , SuSE Linux Database server, SuSE Firewall,... perfect business solutions...;;but you can't order it through the website! Isn't this quite stupid? Lexmark Z11 Printer in SuSE 7.3

hello all, Can anyone please tell me how to get a Z11 printer to stop printing off the page on the bottom? I tried adjusting the margins and all but I just can't see to stop it from blurring at the end of the page and messing up at the start of the second. Any Ideas? Thanks, Scott

Actually I have the application (3c5x9cfg.exe) if you need it. It's on 3com's website, but it's a hassle to find. I can send you the disk images and you can open it from there. I just sys'd a floppy from an old dos box and copied the cfg util over. I have a box with two 3c509 pnp cards in it. Had to disable the pnp to get it to go, but 7.3 handled everything else fine. Do you have WindowMaker 0.65 installed already? If not, rpm it from the CD's, then try the ./configure && make && make install bit from your 0.80 directory. New kde3: can't build kdebindings3

Has anyone here attempted to build the kdebindings3-2.91-2.rpm package in the beta release of KDE 3 (SuSE version, of course)? It depends on several libraries that I can't find: libkfile.so.4 is needed by kdebindings3-2.91-2 libkssl.so.4 is needed by kdebindings3-2.91-2 libksycoca.so.4 is needed by kdebindings3-2.91-2 The ".3" versions of these are provided by kdelibs (from KDE2), but the ".4" versions aren't in kdelibs3 and I can't find them anywhere else either. RPM is a fine system, but one problem with it is that when you're missing stuff, you're told what you're missing but not what package it's in. Unless you have an archive with that information, you can search in vain for a long time. Paul Abrahams

SuSE 7.3 local CD install using DVD mounted over network for YaST2

I have a 7.3 box that is exporting the install DVD under /cdrom to the local LAN. I have another box that was installed via CDROM, because I get tired of fiddling around w/ boot disks. Now I want to change the installation sources to the DVD mounted via NFS. I go thru the steps to do this, but it never 'takes'. I can change the settings, Save&Exit, and come right back, and the settings I entered are gone. WTF? If I enter the settings, and select Next/Continue, it gripe a couple times about the install disc not matching the original disc 1, but gives me the option to skip it. How the heck do I get this straightened out so that a) YAST2 will retain the changed settings for the installation sources b) YAST2 will quit bitching about the DVD id being different from the CD1 id Thanks, Monte -- All right, breaks over. Hi; I've been having fun all day.:-) After opening up my PC and seeing the amount of dust thats built up over the year, I gave every thing a complete clean out (even removing the motherboard). I even used the Vaccum cleaner to clean the case out. Once I came to put back the ide cables I realised that I could have both of my hard drives using the ATA100 connectors on my Asus A7V motherboard. The final drive arrangements are as follows. 40Gig hd on primary ATA100 (master) 15Gig hd on Secondary ATA100 (master) DvD rom on primary ATA66 (master) cd -rw on secondary ATA66 (master) This solves my origional question below. Also I removed my Windows partition and am now running my system Windows free. Mine came with only 1Mb and under heavy load i.e whilst RTFM in SuSE 5.2 (remember then ?).I was guilty of felling the equatorial rain forest in kernel 2.0-pre9 or so. Try and find the 4 Mb upgrade which I think slots neatly in. And more importantly, avoid using very thin sheet like 80g. You will have to unassemble the unit, to clean out the mess. I did that twice. KDE 3/Adrian RPMs

I've installed the KDE3 rpms from Adrian and have experienced a problem which doesn't allow me to open with KDE3. KDE2 work fine here, however. In general the message states that it can't find and/or make a network connection with ".DCOPserver-xxxxxx__0" (what happen to the ":" in the message as in ".DCOPserver-xxxxxx_:0"?). Any thoughts are appreciated!!! Anthony
