Strange DNS error.....

Hi, I am getting a strange DNS error - this does not happen all the time - Every now and again when I am browsing the net I get the message "Cannot find server or DNS Error" when I know for a fact that the website I am trying to reach does exist. Check my /var/log/mail log file I am also seeing that when sending out emails, my MTA (sendmail) is rejecting a portion of emails with the message "host name lookup failure" - again I know for sure the hosts it is trying to connect to exist. I don't use an ISP so I am keen to try to work out why this is happenning - anyone know why how I can track down why this is happenning ? Sorry if this is a bit off the subject of Linux... Dan

Compiling

Hi list: I have a problem compiling the kernel. I was replaced de symlink linux -> linux-2.4.10.SuSE with linux -> linux-2.4.17 Then I do a make xconfig, make dep , make clean, make bzImage , make modules and make modules_install. All rigth but there is no kernel in ./arch/i386/boot to copy to /boot Know somebody why? Thank you, Martin.

Help! How can I convert a PostScript file to a Graphic or Vector PDF?

Hi everyone, I have a problem, which I thought I had solved, but apparently did not. :-\ Okay here it is - I had a Microsoft Publisher document that needed to be transferred to someone who does not have MS Publisher. It seemed the obvious way (to me), was to save the Pub doc to PostScript format, then convert it to a PDF file once safely back in Linux. However, whenver I try to convert my PS file to a PDF, large chucks of text disappear. It seems to me my options are either to turn the text into vector images inside the PDF file or to save the PS file into some kind of graphic. However, I have no idea how to do either. printer problem

Hi! I tried printing through Nestacpe but my printer started blinking "low on ink" although it's not. I don't need to be able to print through Linux. my problem now is that everytime I start Linux it tries to print the document. How can I empty the printer queue? - tk

How to generate a module.conf file?

Ok, I'm not sure how this happened but I think that when I tried to install the SBLive drivers form the creative opensource site may modules.conf went bye bye. Now I did a cloneconf and make dep, then make modules and the mod install. Then mk_initrd and lilo. When I run lsmod It actually shows the right mods now. This happened this morning when I first booted my sys. The nvidia kernel drivers wouldn't load. I solved this, after figuring out that they actually worked correctly, by the line /sbin/modprobe -k NVdriver in the init.d/boot.local file. Promise Ultra100 TX2

Hi all! Im on my way to buy a new DMA-100 controller card to my computer and found the Promise Ultra100TX2. My main purpose is to expand my computer from 4 IDE harddrives to 8. Could this be possible with this controller under SuSE 7.2 or 7.3 ? Does it also work "right-out-of-the-box" or do i need some specific drivers ?? I searched the Promise Webbsite, but didn´t find any thing. If anyone knows, i would be happy :-) Thanks in advance /Richard K

'Mail' and proxy server

Hi, On my machine I have KMail setup and working fine via a proxy server for SMTP and POP3. My problem is, is that I have a number of perl scripts, that use 'Mail' to send emails. This works fine for local emails (me@myserver), but has problems with remote ones (me(a)yahoo.com) The initial error was 'unable to resolve DNS...', which is fine as I don't have a DNS server on the machine. I 'fixed' this by adding the domains of the email addresses I want to send (only 5-6) to my hosts file pointing to my proxy server. The problem I am stuck on is that my proxy server is rejecting the send attempts because the 'sender' is me@myserver rather than me(a)myISP.com. Does anyone know if you can pass an account name and password to 'Mail' as a commandline parameter, or think of another solution? Fried SuSEconfig or yast in 7.3?

Hello, I just made a brand-new installation of 7.3 and one of the first things I did after the install was open yast and set all my favorite 'rc' settings, one of this is DISPLAYMANAGER=console. Upon rebooting, however, it cam up as xdm in init 5. Looking at /etc/inittab I discovered that SuSEconfig had not changed inittab at all. So I changed it by hand and rebooted. That worked, but in order to test yast, I set DISPLAYMANAGER back to kdm and rebooted - again, /etc/rc.config had the right setting but inittab was not changed. This greatly worries me - if it's broken I'm going to have to re-reun the whole installation - I don' want an install that's broken. It would appear to me that it's SuSEconfig that's hurt - anyone have an ideas what I could try before reinstalling? want a text login

I'd like one of my machines to boot to a regular text login. How do I set that up? It's nice that they give me KDE2, a really enjoyable environment, but this machine is just a server and a place to keep gigs of files and I've grown tired of waiting for KDE2 to start up so I can get to a command line. (I've read through some of the SuSE support docs and a faq or two.) I can't believe how long it's taking me to make the crossover to Linux /unix commands. I'm used to being in control and something of a 'power user' in the dos world, for lack of a better term. This is taking forever it seems. I can't even do the simplest things, like I want to see a listing of just directories. ls *. doesn't do it. I know I saw it explained in some book or manual somewhere.

Hi There ARE Mplayer rpms available, I have seen them myself while browsing. I would recommend you DO NOT use them for two reasons. 1) The Mplayer homepage states it is illegal to create/distribute binaries due to license issues With some of the codecs used. 2) Mplayer requires manual copying of libraries (win32 codecs and codecs.conf file) along with the libav codecs Into the Mplayer tree and your root tree before compiling. And also it must have pre-installed things like dvddecss and dvdread etc. Thus, you would more than likely get a rpm that installed but didnt run properly or at all due to the missing libs. Download the progs and the docs and have a good read before trying to compile mplayer, Its well worth it. I myself just used a highlighter to mark the important parts and went from there. Two gotchas though .Look out for the correct divx4linux package, there are two, and one doesnt have the install.sh required to install the library (the one dated 08) the one dated 25 does. And also libdvdread can be a pain to install, just keep make && make install ing it until Mplayer picks it up. This shows up when running Mplayer for the first time on my system.
