Sounds like you didn't run the command as root plug in the camera and turn it on (my camera and computer both make beeps) open a shell su your root password /sbin/fdisk -l (the letter L) that should do it

kdeglobals - anoying behavior

Grettings all! I have a file: /home/user/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals it's permissions keep getting changed to owner root and when it does so it makes the desktop settings change. I looked in various scripts and can't find what is changing the permissions on this file. I notice other files in that same directory keep getting their ownership permissions changed as well, however the file I am concerned about is kdeglobals since it has to constantly be manually changed back to the user's ownership and then the user has to re-start kde each time. I only noticed this because the Default Language was changed and the Clock was in 24hour format (when I know I set the language to US and the clock to 12hour.) thanks for helping. -- Leave the Constitution Alone. http://members.osb.net/phil

TrippLite UPS Interface Problem

TrippLite Support has not responded to my email messages, so before contacting the TrippLite CPO, I am hoping someone out there on this Linux list has had success with the serial (DBD-9) interface from UPS to SuSE 7.3. With the ups monitoring software installed and TrippLite BC PRO 850 UPS connected, my system shuts down within seconds of entering: rcups start I am using a 9-wire cable that connects the same pins (straight-through) on either end. I have tried genericups type numbers of "4" and "5". Further, due to no answer from TrippLite Support, I attempted to do some reverse engineering. I disconnected the UPS from 110v, and monitored resistences and voltages on the unit's DBD-9 connector. I expect there are contact-closures on the other side. It ran my computer and CRT 40 minutes before the low-battery indicator lit up. Through the whole process, pins 3,6,7,8 indicated near-zero resistance together and connected to ground. No changes occurred through the power disconnect and discharge sequence! Your help appreciated. It seems like a good unit, and I would hate to have to return it to the vendor. ... I have searched the TrippLite web site, without success. I have attempted to locate the active power-fail pins by taking ohm and voltage readings... The technical information would be a big help. Finding the Font Folder (Help, Please)

I am using S.u.S.E. 7.3. I need help with locating the "font server" and with installing the AbiWord font folder there. After installing the current AbiWord calling it up, I received a warning that there is a problem with the font path. AbiWord's Help/FAQ said I must add the AbiWord font folder to the font server's configuration (the text of the FAQ is set out at the end of this message). I looked up "fonts" in the manual and could not make out where to go or what to do when I got there. Please help dj tuchler _________________________________________________________________________ Unix Font Warning For AbiWord to function properly, it needs to add its font folder to the X collection of font folders. If your X setup is such that the responsibility for the fonts is entirely shifted on a dedicated font server (i.e., RedHat setup), AbiWord will not be able to do this automatically, and a warning will be displayed during start up. To get around the problem, you have to manually (and permanently) add the AbiWord font folder to the font server's configuration, please see your distribution's documentation. Once you do, you can turn the warning off by clearing the Show Unix Font Warning check box on the Preferences Schemes tab of the Preferences dialog. You can stop AbiWord from attempting to modify your font path by clearing the Modify Unix Font Path.

KDevelop 2.0

Hi all, I was trying to set up KDevelop 2.0 and ran into some problems with the KDevelop Setup program. The program states that it has found the QT docs and set the link, and then it claims that it has found the KDE development docs and set the link. However, in the next step, I try to build the documentation index but it fails with the error "QT-documentation-link is not set correctly". So what's the problem here? -ronc

Cd into the dir suse you'll see a file called inst-sys.tar.gz > you need to run tar -zxvf inst-sys.tar.gz in the suse dir. I unpacked it (under windows) When you boot from the floppy and it askes for cd1 hit cancel, you get kicked into text base install > mode. Select your language and keyboard lay out. After you have made those 2 selections, It will bring you into another menu with a couple of options, one of them being Start Installation/Upgrade. Dont go > to that yet. the to the very top of this menu, hit enter, it will bring up more options, The very Last option will be Advanced Mode (or something along the lines of that) It's debug(expert) menu go to that and hit enter. THE ONLY > THING YOU NEED TO CHANGE HERE, is when it askes should the new image be loaded when found, select YES. it's menu load rootimage into ramdisk (???) Just hit enter untill it kicks you out of the advance mode selection, hit ESC to go back > to to the root menu (the one where Start Installation/Upgrade is) and go into Start Installation/Upgrade, select install from Hard Drive, enter the correct info and you on your way. > I write source dir (/suse) and it's not helping I can not manage it. I think I'll download 7.3-evaluation iso image and maybe I'll install it. sendmail/new isp

Hi All, SuSE 7.1 and sendmail 8.11.2-34. I have signed up trying another isp as we have been having _lots_ of troubles with btopenworld. Sendmail has been working great, no problems. But, I have tried configuring it to use with the new isp with no success. I have edited the following files to reflect the new information: sendmail.cf sendmail.cw inews_mail_gateway relay-domains genericstable rc.config I then run SuSEconfig and then sighup, or reboot. I still get an error msg that forwarding is not allowed. I know I must be missing something really obvious but damned if I can put my finger on it. Any ideas? VMware woes

Hi, I havw downloaded VMware 3.0.rpm and now struggling to get it working with WinXP Pro under SuSE 7.3 (SuSE 7.3 alone works without any problems whatsoever). I have Athlon XP 1600+, 512 MB DDR RAM, m/b with VIA KT266A chipset (Chaintech m/b), Geforce MX400 Video card with 64 MB DDR, 40 GB HD, Sound blaster, running SuSE 7.3 with SuSE 2.4.16 kernel, XFree 4.2, latest glibc updates from SUSE ftp. Of course, I have compiled and installed NVIDIA kernel module and NVIDIA GLX. The vmware 3.0 have been installed and configured without problems, Win XP Pro have been installed on virtual disk on ReiserFS root partition with bridged networking, 10 GB have been allocated for virtual disk (30 GB free in partiiton). In short, Win XP Pro have not been able to work more than 20 min. vmware crashed with segmentation fault, or killed XFree, or just freeze machine with strange video artifacts. I have changed AGP (and other) settings for nvidia, tried XFree 4.1 and 4.2 (configured with YaST), upgraded glibc, wiped out vmware virtual disk and reinstalled WinXP Pro from scratch again, checked ReiserFS partition for corruption, removed sound, floppy, unwanted port support from vmware settings, reinstalled vmware rpm, but nothing helped. I just could not figure out what may be the source of problem. My vmware trial time is almost over, as well as my patience. May be I should try another version of Windows, or go to Win4Lin? Upgrading Kernel on Laptop

I'd like to upgrade my Kernel from the 2.4.4 to probably 2.4.16. However, I'm using a laptop. When I did this before, I remember having to get the newest PCMCIA drivers too. Is this still true? Does anyone know if I'd have to do this with a SuSE Compiled Kernel? On another note, I should still be able to run make cloneconfig and then copy the .config file to the new kernel root and then run make menuconfig and have all of SuSE's layout turned on by default right?
