Hence although the information is there, in order to apply it, one has to understand the details that are needed to make things work as they should do. One of the goals of this project is to explain things in terms that the layperson can understand, using SuSE tools and the SuSE directory structure, along with the SuSE boot concept. Much of this information can already be found under /usr/share/doc/packages. However, it takes a long time before the user finally discovers what is available and where it is located. HELP! SuSE Linux 8.1 : Boot Disk with Software RAID 5

Dear List I am trying to make a bootable floppy / CD that will mount my software RAID 5 and have been grappling with this issue for three weeks without success. I have discovered that as of 8.0, you can no longer create a boot floppy as the images will no longer fit on a floppy (per http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/kgw_bootdisketten.html) However, I cannot use the article's advice to simply create a LILO boot floppy because LILO does not recognise RAID partitions - editing lilo.conf to boot from /dev/md0 will result in a kernel panic. The only way I can get anything to boot at the moment is use LILO to mount /boot, which is an ext2 partition on /dev/sda1. My problem is - what if the first disk in the RAID 5 array fails? I cannot simply hot plug a drive and expect it to boot without recreating the /boot partition on that drive. Ideally, the entire /boot partition should be able to reside on the boot floppy or boot CD so that the only partitions I need to create on the drives are the RAID (and swap) partitions. Does anyone know of any way to get /boot onto a bootable CD that will then proceed to mount / as /dev/md0? I am not able to do this from LILO directly without a kernel panic. And the GRUB documentation specifically says that it does not support RAID. Any suggestions? Your feedback would be very much appreciated. XFree3.x/SuSE7.0 video settings no longer work, please help.

In 7.0 I used sax and xfree3.x to get windowmanager to run, but now in 8.1 I can no longer get it to work. I have tried different settings during installation but none worked. Then I tried to manually adjust the /etc/X11/XF86Config file manually, but that didn't work either. Then I tried xf86config, and still, nothing. When the X display comes up, it is there, but all screwy and I can't see anything on the screen. I know my settings from 7.0, but it won't take them. Please help. Video: Trident 2MB TGUI 9440 Monitor: IBM/Samsung PS/1 33G4577 (14" VGA) Horizontal Refresh: 31.5 Vertical Refresh: 50-60 (yeah, i know they are old...but I rarely login once it's up and running) I have tried 640x480 at 8-bit, and 16-bit. It installed completely with Yast2 installation screens, so it should work, maybe if anyone knows the Yast2 settings during installation I could use them? During install in 7.0 I had chosen LCD 800x600@60Hz to get it to work, but this won't do it anymore. I remember I had the same problems with 7.0 when I tried to use XFree4.x (which is why I had used 3.x). I thought that XFree4.x had a bug, as it was an immature version, still. Greetings all, Seems like I have seen several here talking about or complaining about the new graphics cards that are not "Built by ATI" but only powered by. Here is a mail I got from the XFree86 list today. Hope it helps. Through our various feedback mechanisms we have determined that there is a large community of 'Powered by ATI' Linux users that did not benefit from our Linux drivers. At this point we are happy to announce an update to our Linux driver (ver. 2.5.1) which will work on both 'Powered by' and 'Built by.' locale -m -- Charmaps missing!

Hi: I don't have any charmaps: user1@ting:~ $ locale -m locale: cannot read character map directory `/usr/share/i18n/charmaps': No such file or directory I have the following related packages installed: user1@ting:~ $ rpm -qa|grep locale glibc-locale-2.2.5-151 icu-locales-2.2-13 user1@ting:~ $ rpm -qa|grep i18n koffice-i18n-th-1.2-0 kde3-i18n-th-3.0.3-58 kde-i18n-th-2.2.2-404 Anybody know how to get the charmaps, or why Suse 8.1 doesn't have them? Netgear Nat'l Semiconductor driver

I have a netgear 10/100 nic (dp83815) using a national semiconductor chipset, and I am using suse 8.1. I remember before with 7.x I had to d/l the driver but it had an issue which drastically slowed down the data throughput. DVD playback

I've changed the DVD drive on my SuSE 8.1 system to be IDE instead of SCSI emulated, and enabled DMA. Now, the system doesn't lock when I try to access the drive with DMA turned on :-) However, even though I can mount data CDs and even DVD movie discs in this drive, I can't play movies - even the same disk I've just mounted (when it's not mounted, of course!). MPlayer complains "Couldn't open DVD device: /dev/dvd", and xine just does nothing. I've linked /dev/hdc (the DVD drive) explicitly to /dev/dvd ("ln -sf /dev/hdc /dev/dvd") but the same thing happens. (It was linked to /dev/sr0 before I got rid of ide-scsi on this drive.) Why might this be? thanks for your reply. i'm well aware of the fact that this suse verion is really too old, but as we're having a major upgrade round in half a year, i want to wait until then. and, besides that: it has always been running perfectly, so why change a winning team..? (apache is upgraded to the latest version, btw...) anyway: thanks for you suggestions, but they did not solve the problem. any other suggestions? Hi. I downloaded source code of xawtv 3.80. I have suse 8.0, kde 3.0.3 If i 'make' such source code it says i need *-devel rpm's but it doesn't say which ones. Beside on the site i found another file tv-fonts-1.0 i don't know where to locate it. Can anyone help me? thanx Gigio
