Lexmarkz35 Calibrates but not print

Greetings to alle SuSE and Linux users of all styles ;-) Now to the ungreeted, (my printer). I hope I am in the right listing for this. On my new SuSE 8.1 box i have a mini usb hub between my box and my Lexmarkz35 printer. I have download the orignal driver from the lexmark site for linux OS. I have installed exactly like the readme said. Then came a calibrating window from the driver software from lexmark that also ran okay. It printed out the color adjustments correct. Now on to CUPS how did Not find the driver in the list. It knows that there is a printer on usb/lp0 but thats all. So I tryed to make adjustments by using a Ghostscript device with pxlcolor then made a test. klack, klack, it tryed to calibrate the that was it, no printing of any test ps. Another problem is when I drive down and boot back up again the light on the usb hub is not burning. I have to pull the usb plug out and back in again. Is it possible that someone can help me with this Ghostly print problem ? A Box with out a printer is like going to school with a lovely notebook and nothing to right with :-/ TiA Robinson

Problems getting USB to work

I've been trying for days to get USB to work with either my Handspring Visor, USB cradle) and my Argus Camera to work with USB. I have had no success. I'm using SuSE Pro 8.1. Can anyone give me some tips? Thanks, Mark

Freetype fun

Hi All, Faintly irritated by still-fuzzy fonts after doing a bit of work to get browser / general / especially Mozilla / fonts looking better (lots of good advice at http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/mini/FDU and in the Unofficial FAQ at $YOURLOCALMIRROR/susefaq/generalx.html), I took the bull by the horns and compiled and installed freetype 2.1.3 from http://www.freetype.org (./configure --prefix=/usr && make && make install seems fine). In case of screw-ups, I had backed up the libraries under /usr/lib, the include directory /usr/include/freetype, and /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libfreetype.a (the only file I could find under the X11 hierarchy that seemed to be from freetype. Thinking myself smart, I copied the newly formed libfreetype.a from my build directory to /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/. That caused the X server to crash on restarting, putting the old libfreetype.a back where it was restored all to health. So the point of the mail is 1) freetype 2.1.3 really does seem, on my 8.1 i386 system at least, to provide signifcant improvement in the anti-aliasing / font-smoothing performance. See freetype's site for the scoop on why/how. You might want to check it out, but not before reading the various other advice and caveats at the addresses above. 2) Obviously I should have left /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libfreetype.a alone, and not meddled. Can a patient person quickly and coherently explain why the system needs the old one left in place? I think I understood this once, but clearly don't now. hylafax probelm

Hello, I have here HylaFAX up and running. After I receive a fax a mail is send with a link to (ftp://tamboti:4559/recvq/fax00001.tif) the actuall fax. The fax itself has got the rights 640 uucp.uucp and I can manually view the faxes. But when I use the ftp link than I get the answer that the file can't be opend - when I change the rights to 644 uucp.uucp everything works. But I don't want to set the viewing right for everybody - what do the expert say? What Do I need to change? It does not make a difference when I used "users" as the group, and my test user is in the group uucp. Thanks Michael

Thanks to all for your kind replies. It sounds like the full install of 8.1 is the recommended way to go. I have already gotten it off the local FTP server over night. Since I have a spare SCSI disk, I will simply clone the current system disk (/ and /boot partitions) to that, and install 8.1 on top of the current installation and see what happens. Fortunately the system disk is really small, only 2 Gb. Everything else is on /raid and /arch, which are an 18 Gb RAID5 array and a 60 Gb RAID1+0 array. These were made using the *new* RAID tools with autodetect and all, so my assumption will be that the 8.1 version will detect those fine, but otherwise leave them alone. My guess is that something will break, but fixing the broken things will be less of an effort than installing an entirely new 8.1 on a blank disk, and then re-install and re-configure all the other applications (like SAMBA, DNS, etc.). Or do you think would this leave too many old 6.4 things around? If the installation totally fails, all I should have to do is to swap the 2Gb system disks. Can't find X includes???

Hello SuSE folkz, I was trying to install unixODBC from the tar ball on SuSE8.1. During configuration it exits with error: Can't find X includes. Please check your installation and add the correct path. The question is where and in what system config file I have to add the correct path /usr/X11R6/include to overcome this issue. Interesting enough, I didn't have this problem on SuSE8.0 and 7.3 Many thanks in advance for any help. Alex -- Microsoft Windows users should be covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act!!! Enabling 100 dpi fonts in 8.1 runlevel 5

Greetings! How do I go about enabling 100 dpi fonts when using runlevel 5? I have edited the Xservers file and added -dpi 100 to the command line there, but to no avail. It still runs at 75 x 75 dpi. If I start at runlevel 3 and run startx -- -dpi 100 it will start up at 100 x 100 dpi. I am using KDM and KDE. I'm stumped. (Ok, maybe not so hard to do... but I've searched both Suse and Google without finding an answer) Thanks in advance! Doug

mkisofs for MSDOS

Folks, I have the following problem. I want to create a CDROM for a compatriot from my 7.3 Linux platform - readable by MSDOS and - has full file names not limited to 8.3. I've tried several options. How to have Konqueror prompt for download directory?

How do you make Konquerer always prompt me for where it wants to download a file? I've looked all over the options and don't see it. I know I can right click and do a "copy to" but this does not work for some things like some image buttons that are links. For example I want to download opera using Konq and I can't seem to simply save any of the files from this page without it automatically starting to save to some tmp directory. What am I doing wrong?
