Boot Option Question

When I boot my suse 8.1 OS the boot options include the drive info and a "vga=788" parameter. When I leave the vga=788 statement in X fails to start - I get a dull glowing screen - which is nice enough, but doesn't allow for a lot of interaction. I have stumbled onto the fact that removing the vga=788 parameter completely seems to allow X to work as billed. So my question: "What is this vga=788 specifying and how can I remove it or correct it so it works properly?" Regards, Hagen Finley

Mplayer, Ogle & Xine RPM Links

A couple days ago, someone posted the links to the RPM files for MPlayer, Ogle, and Xine. I thought I had saved the message, but now I can't find it. I have tried to browse the archives to locate it, but since the archives don't have a search function and google seems to only have indexed the list up to September, I couldn't find it. Freecom External USB Hard Drive

This drive installed without any problems. SuSE 8.1 recognised the drive and loads it as /dev/sda1. This drive should be mounted automatically to /media/sda1 after the PC has booted. At the moment, either the /media/sda1 icon on KDE desktp has to be clicked or the mount command has to be issued. How can this be automated? The first access is slow as the directory structure is fed to the PC by the drive. Subsequent access is acceptable. How can access be speded up? Thanks for your assistance.

Lilo boot question

Hi all, I'm planning to reinstall w2k on a pc that has 2 IDE HDD in it. One is running SuSE 8.0 and lilo is boot the boot manager. Now when I reinstall windows it will remove the lilo part in the boot sector on the w2k disk. How can I get lilo to boot w2k again after the w2k installation as I won't be able to boot SuSE anymore I think. Any help would be appreciated. thx, Peter

Clients can read their Yahoo mail but not hotmail. Only the server can get hotmail. I think that's excellent news. But I'd like to know why! SuSE 8.1, squid and SuSEfirewall2 Cheers, Steve.

Compaq Proliant Series 4000 server

Help with Grub

An attempt at loading SuSE Linux 8.1 on a Toshiba laptop (Uk version, Satellite 3000-X11) is proving to be difficult. The initial install appears to go smoothly until the packages are installed. When writing the boot manager to MBR section of the hard disk, the laptop hangs. On re-booting, the SuSE DVD is used to boot and launch the installed OS (Linux). The login screen appears and the system is stable. On launching YaST2 and using the bootloader option, I have tried to manually load the start-up settings. On re-booting the PC, no system is found. GRUB, it appears, is not being installed by Yast even though no errors are reported. As a test, I have a previous version 8.0 of SuSE and this installs without a hitch. I have installed Windows XP home edition, which came with the pc) and this boots correctly. It would appear that GRUB is not being installed. I have checked the menu.lst file in the /etc/grub section. The unusual thing here is that the linux section starts with ,2)/boot/vmlinuz instead of (hd0,2)/boot/linux. Can anyone help to install either GRUB or LILO manually? Any help appreciated.

Thanks Patrick. As an avid reader of man pages (most of which I anyway do not understand) and user of info and howto's I know I have often to go back to google. In the meantime I am at least an expert on subjects such as dialup, line noise, slow download, stalled, 292 B/s and connection timed out. Because those are the things I meet on an daily base. And of course due to the amount of man pages consumed you start getting a blind spot on such basic things as file endings which have a meaning.
