.htaccess (almost)

After an embarassing amount of time spent, I am appealing to the list for help. I have a minimal install of SuSE with Apache/mySQL/PHP4 and some libs set-up. This all works fine. I tried to use .htaccess to protect a directory, and I'm pretty sure I did everything right- I found several web tutorials, and they are all similar and fairly straightforward. I read everything at apache.org and even some Mosiac docs. The directory challenges me, my little "message" shows in the box and changes when I change it. I edit the files and do an apachectl stop/start to toggle the server. I get the same error after a third failed attempt: "Authorization Required -This server could not verify that you are authorized to access the document requested. Either you supplied the wrong credentials (e.g., bad password), or your browser doesn't understand how to supply the credentials required." I've fiddled pretty hard with both .htaccess and .htpasswd. I've changed those two files ownerships from root to wwwrun to nobody to root again. I thought I set the Apache logs to "debug" but they don't seem to be recording too much. What kind of problem might I be up against? Thanks!

Adding devices to Konqueror SideBar

Hello, When using Konqueror as file browser at your left there is a sidebar with some trees. There you see home folders, root folders, bookmarks, DEVICES, and so on... Inside devices tree there is CD, Floppy, and my Windows FAT partition. When I click on them, they are mounted... Ok, I want to add some more devices as I have a SCSI Jaz drive and a USB camera that sometimes I plug and mount as filesystems. Where is the configuration to add new devices to the sidebar tree??? bogus cluster size

Booting Suse 7.2 I get everytime and again a failed message on the screen. Looking for the reason I found that "fatfs bogus cluster size is " is the start of a search for a fruitless search. Linux is trying to do something with a "dev 16:41 " device. How can I get rid of the failure message and of the bogus cluster size (whatever that may be ;-))

ulimit looks just easy to use but... "-c sets the maximum size of core files created" what is a core file? "-l sets the maximum size that may be locked into memory" What is it? "-m - the maximum resident set size" What is it? "-s the maximum stack size" Is this the maximum stack size of a single program, right? "-t maximum amount of cpu time in seconds" In seconds? ckfs vs scandisk

I dual boot between Win98 and SuSE 7.1. occasionally, (like 4-5 times per day) Windows will lock-up. upon reboot I might choose to boot to Linux instead. Is there a need to run ckfs in Linux before accessing the Windows partition? Also, if I do check the filesystem, do I still need to allow windows to finish it's scandisk the next time I boot to windows? now some follow-up questions: What are the differences between the two utilities? What are they actually checking for? How does the system detect that the drive has or hasn't been scanned? I assume there is some sort of flag set on a clean shutdown from the message "check forced" on a Linux boot. Can ckfs reset this flag on a windows disk when doing a scan? gaim

I downloaded the lastest gaim-0.11.0pre15-1 and I am having a dependency problem. Needs libgdk_pixbuf.so.2. All other dependencies have been satisfied. I could not find this on the suse 7.1 disks, but found it doing a ftp search on the net. I now need to know where gaim looks for this file. I have tried putting it in /usr/lib/xxx, but still have the dependency problem. Does anyone know where gaim looks for this file? thanks in advance Nevada

Might be something with this: --- printer.c: Disabling reads from problem bidirectional printer on usblp0 printer.c: usblp0: USB Unidirectional printer dev 2 if 0 alt 1 hub.c: already running port 2 disabled by hub (EMI?), re-enabling... usb.c: USB disconnect on device 2 --- Try to change the port on the USB hub you are using. It could also be a problem with your printer. I believe you would be better off using the 2.4.x kernel with USB instead of the 2.2.19. Getting Java to Work in KDE

I'm having trouble getting Konqi to display Java applets. I've been trying to get it to use IBM's Java2 JRE 1.3 (included with SuSE 7.1), and it will activate the JRE, but it never gets past the "Loading Applet" message. Any ideas? Karol, Thanks for the information, I pulled down the yast.rpm (1.09.05) update and installed it. However yast still crashes at the same point. I did an strace on yast on the system that crashes and also on one of the the duplicate system that doesn't crash. In comparing the outputs of the two strace's, there doesn't appear to be anything that jumps out as the culprit. The failing one fails on an llseek call on fd 9, then it starts bailing. Here is the output where the failure occurs. _llseek(9, 40960, [40960], SEEK_SET) = 0 time([999208207]) = 999208207 open("/var/log/YaST.err", O_WRONLY|O_APPEND|O_CREAT|O_LARGEFI | _llseek(9, 40960, [40960], SEEK_SET) = 0 fstat64(13, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=43, ...}) = 0 Hmmmm, god I hate to fdisk/format/install and start over, but at this point I see no alternative. Too bad SuSE folks are too inundated to help. Hope the MS boys don't hear about this one. NFS patches for Reiser fs

We're having a real problem with NFS here (files and directories suddenly becoming invisible or permission denied). This is on a Compaq server with hardware RAID (cpqarray) and Reiser filesystem for everything but /boot. Someone suggested that there is a problem with the combination of Reiser and NFS, and that seems to be borne out by a patch on the namesys.com site. This is a SuSE 7.1 box (kernel 2.4.0) with no modifications, do we need to patch for this? I assumed that SuSE's kernels were already patched for Reiser. Do I really need a 10/100 NIC?

My actual network is conected through a router that is connected to a cable modem and providing internet access to three laptops. What I am going to do is put one of those laptops outside the router so it can be set as a webserver and be accessed by outsiders. In that case that pc will be in the middle of the router and de ISP. I have a 10mbp NIC and a 10/100mbp. Do I really need to get another 10/100 to put in that computer or I can just put the 10/100 in the NIC connected to the ISP and the 10mbp going to the router? Groups

This may be kind of a stupid question: I have set up groups on a machine w/o a password. There used to be a utility that allowed users to add themselves to groups. If the group was password protected, the user needed the password. If it wasn't, they could just join. Setting up a network printer with YaST2

I'm running 7.2 on an NT network. I would like to print to a laserjet 8000 configured as IT_Printer2 on the NT network. I also have the IP address. I went through the Printer setup in YaST2, but nothing prints when I try to print the test page. I tried both the NT name of the printer as well as the IP address. Do I have to configure Samba first? I assumed that the YaST2 tool would not require that I run Samba, but I could certainly be wrong. Hi John, check out the SuSe site for hardware (in-)compatability issues. I had similar experiences using YAST for a clean install of 7.1 on a host equipped with a Promise RAID ATA100 controller and a SCSI-drive hooked up to a AHA-2940 Adaptec (SCSI drive was destination for this install...) KDE2.2 upgrade questions

I upgraded last night using the rpms from kde.org, and it went fairly well, but I have some lingering problems. First of all, the following packages had dependency problems, so I didn't install them (& I don't think it should matter): qtecasound-devel-0.1.2d1-87.rpm kdebindings-mozilla-2.2pre1-5.rpm kdepim-kpilot-2.2.0-7.rpm kec-0.6.2b-6.rpm kdelibs-cups-2.2.0-4.rpm 1. The biggest problem first: If I log out of KDE, and then try to restart (using "startx"), KDE will start up, but the screen is so dark it is virtually unreadable. If I reboot it will start up just fine. If I log out, do a ctrl-alt-bksp, and then "startx", it appears as if it is going to start up normally - the KDE splash screen appears but never gets past the first step and just sits there. Although a small square which says "click to connect to internet" (or something like that) appears - if I click on it, my modem starts dialing). The ONLY thing I did was install the new 2.2 packages, nothing else. Any ideas as to what might cause this? 2. When I tried to do a search in SuSE Help I got the following error message: "There appears to be a configuration error. You have associated Konqueror with text/html, but it can't handle this file type." If I remove html from the file types associated w/ Text in Konqueror Settings, then it will open the help file in a text editor as the html source file! ???? I have no idea what to do here...... 3. When I first started KDE after the upgrade, I got an error message about /dev/dsp (not being able to start the soundserver). I disabled aRts and that seemed to take care of it, but I get soundserver error messages when I start some applications (i.e. like the battleship game). All of the system sounds work (from both front and rear speakers). However, when I play a music CD using kscd, sound only comes from the front speakers, and not the rear. Any insights on this apparent soundserver weirdness? SuSE eMail Server II (Error 554 Relay access denied)

I had installed SuSE Email Server II with a Local IP 192.168.2.100 and mydomain.co.uk. I have no problem in Local Area Network (LAN) IP 192.168.2.0/255.255.255.0 for send / receive emails to other domain names like user(a)aol.com or user(a)suse.co.uk. Our second office is connected to another office via Router having IP 192.168.3.0/255.255.255.0. Now the problem is in our second office, I'm able to receive all emails and can send emails to mydomain.co.uk. But I'm not able to send mails to any other domain like user(a)aol.com or user(a)suse.co.uk or any other domain. I get an error in Outlook Express while sending mails: The error is as follows: "The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'user(a)suse.co.uk'. Subject 'Test for Sending Email', Account: 'user(a)mydomain.co.uk', Server: '192.168.2.100', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '554 <user(a)suse.co.uk>: Recipient address rejected: Relay access denied', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 554, Error Number: 0x800CCC79" I tried to put Second Office IP 192.168.3. in the access file under /etc/postfix/access and recreated database using commands "postmap /etc/postfix/access" and "postfix reload". This does not work. I also tried "mynetworks = 192.168.2.0, 127.0.0.0, 192.168.3.0" in the file "/etc/postfix/main.cf" This also does not work. Have I gone wrong anywhere?. How should I proceed!. Please Help me. Mahesh
