pc does not reboot

Greetings I'm having a problem with a pc, when I issue the reboot command the pc hangs with the message LD.LINKER.SO error or something like that. I downloaded kernel 2.4.2 from suse ftp but the problem persist anyone has any idea why this happens?

Hi, Just started seeing this message in the xconsole log. It appears partway through a KDE2 logon. (SuSE 7.2, latest KDE2 from SuSE web site): Jun 30 14:22:22 avalon kernel: mtrr: base(0xe8000000) is not aligned on a size(0x1800000) boundary Anyone know what it means? KDE Apps hanging on launch

Hi all, I'm having a bit of a strange problem. I've got a clean install of 7.2; all I've done so far really is set up leafnode and sendmail and recompiled pine. I don't _think_ I've touched any KDE configuration files, but maybe I did something without realising it. The problem is that when I use KDE as root, if I try to start a KDE application (e.g. kmail or konqueror), that application just hangs. I get the frame window up for it (and kmail says it's "initializing"), but they go no further than that. They just sit there, not even redrawing themselves properly. The other users I've created don't suffer from the problem. If I move the .kde2 directory in /root sideways and log in without it, then everything works fine (except of course, I lose the original root KDE setup with its nice "bomb going off" background and stuff.) So I'm guessing some part of the configuration has been trashed somehow. Can anyone tell me (a) what might be going wrong, or at least (b) where can I grab the original .kde2 directory that the SuSE setup kindly provided for me? I've tried looking on the CDs, but I can't see it anywhere obvious... If I can get back to square one, then I'll do a diff of the directories and see if I can figure out what's causing the problem. 7.2: how much difference?

YaST2, YOU, questions/problems

Some questions about YaST2 and Yast Online Update (YOU) (SuSE 7.2) 1. There is a new sax2 (dated 6/19) on the ftp server and also shown on the web page, but YOU does not offer to install it. Is this a problem on SuSE's end, is there a problem with YOU, or do I just not understand the situation? 2. Can YaST2 be used to install the KDE2 files? 3. Can YaST2 be used for YaST1-style ftp updates? The "Change source of installation" module does not seem to work for ftp sites. The Online Update module's "Expert" selection doesn't seem to be able to access anything other than the default directory which only offers the "updates" (except see question 1 above). 4. Can YaST2 be used to install local RPMs? I tried to use YaST2's "Change source of installation" module to point to a local directory with RPM files (The KDE2 rpms) but I just get a message that YaST2 "Could not find SuSE installation-directory". Installation advice

I have an older computer that has just returned from being on loan. I wan to put 7.2 on it. I have two drives, 1.5 G and 6 g. I will need to custom partition it, right? It has less than 64 megs, so no graphical install. And I can get YaST 1 to run, so all i have is the text version of YaST 2. I have asked suse-support about this. But this is the question: How would you recommend that i set up the partitions on the two drives. taskbar problem

Hi list: has anybody else encountered this problem, too? After just installing 7.2 I found that the utilities button (third from left) on the taskbar had a broken link. I *think* the correct link is: ln -s /opt/kde2/share/apps/kappfinder/apps/Utilities/XUtilities /opt/kde2/share/config/SuSE/work If it is somewhere else, please correct and comment. Hopfully Simple Netscape Question

For the moment I'm using Netscape on both sides of my box and desiring to store the mail in just one location. The chosen location is on drive C in the folder Netscape\DCJOHAN\Mail on the windows side, or more simply C:\Netscape\DCJOHAN\Mail. When viewed on the Linux side in the netscape preferences dialog, the browse option displays it as /windows/C/Netscape/dcjohan/Mail. Every time I try to get my mail (save for once this evening when it all downloaded just fine) I get a Netscape: Error "Default Inbox folder does not exist. You cannot download any new messages." I can't see what's wrong here, especially since it actually worked ONCE this evening. Can anyone determine what is going wrong with this setup, and yes, the C drive is mounted. thanks, dave

I am getting heaps of isdnlog messages (see below) As I do not live in Europe I am wondering how I can change this. If I turn off logging will I lose important isdn information ? Hi All Ya! it your mennis ther is back :-) This time i'll spare you with only on Q so here gows nothing. Is it possibel to get some sort of reconection with sub. Im using a slow modem connection and is very slow and unstabel, so i get kick off alot, so im wondring if ther is a way to get Live update to conti.. the priv. selectet files. the way im dowing it now is by konq but then SuSE YOU can't finde out that the pakages is alredy install. Machine hangs at reboot - part2

hello it's me again :) seem like ldconfig wouldn't fix my problem. the error message i get when rebooting the pc is: saving random seed BUG IN DYNAMIC LINKER LD.SO and then hangs forever so i have to push the power button this is very annoying since I remotely administer this pc and sometimes have to reboot it from the shell Thanks in advance for your help

Sendmail setup

Hi everyone. I'm having real problems with my sendmail setup. I've just installed 7.2 Pro (although this problem exists on 6.4 as well) on a "new" machine that is going to become my 'network services' machine (DNS, FTP, SMTP, etc.). I have the following problems: o I have a dialup connection, so the obvious choice for sendmail setup is "host with temporarily(sic) network connection". However, this leaves my machine as an open SMTP relay. Since I'm online 10+ hours a day, with a (relatively) high-speed ISDN connection, this is obviously not acceptable. If I choose "host with permanent network connection", sending mail is very slow, as I have to wait for it to time out on DNS requests. How can this be fixed? o When I choose "host with permanent network connection", the virtusertable does not work. I use it to re-write my outgoing username, (dsmith@ to David.Smith@), so I really want this feature. I posted this problem a while ago, and was told it was a problem with 6.4, but had been fixed in 7.0/1 (can't remember which). It still seems to be a bug in 7.2. Surely it could have been fixed by now? o The most bizarre problem: I use a masqueraded connection to the net, so I use Sendmail to re-write my domain address from the local name (machinename.djsnet) to my mail forwarding domain (ds-electronics.co.uk). This was working perfectly until I built the new DNS server. Now, when I try to send a mail, Sendmail tries to connect to my ISP and send with a rubbish domain name containing "*LOCAL*". The interesting thing about this is that it only happens if I have a working DNS zone for my local network (djsnet). If I break my DNS setup, sendmail works fine. It appears that it was only working before because my DNS setup was broken. I enclose a bounced mail. In case you're wondering: holly.djsnet is the local machine name demon.co.uk is my ISP gazpacho.demon.co.uk the name of my masqueraded machine on the internet ds-electronics.co.uk is my intended From: address - it is a mail forwarding service. Anti-aliasing in KDE: minor success

I've achieved a minor success in getting anti-aliasing to work with the TrueType fonts in my Windows partition. My setup is X4.1.0 and KDE 2.1.1/2 under SuSE 7.1. Here's what I did: 1. In my /etc/X11/XF86Config file, I added at the very beginning of the font list in the Files section: FontPath "/win_c/windows/fonts" 2. Under Linux I went to the Windows font directory and did ttmkfdir. 3. In the configuration file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XftConfig I added a reference to the Windows font directory, like this: dir "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1" dir "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype" dir "/win_c/windows/fonts" 4. Under the Style section in the KDE Control Center, Look& Feel, I turned on anti-aliasing. I didn't have to weed out the Windows font directory, copy fonts elsewhere, transform names to lowercase, or go through any similar gymnastics. Paul

X dpi and default font size

The Font Deuglification HOWTO recommends raising the dpi setting in the xdm configuration to a higher value, e.g., in /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers: :0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X -dpi 100 It suggests choosing something even higher if the hardware will support it. However, raising the dpi setting produces (on my machine, anyway, using KDE) unreasonably large type in several contexts: the kdm login, the numbers that show up for the windows in the KDE taskbar, and the numbers in the squares in kminesweeper :=). Is there a way to crank the typesize of those items down again while retaining the higher dpi setting? They don't seem to be affected by any of the font settings in the KDE control panel (and certainly the kdm login wouldn't be). Paul
