Dear all, 1. Where is the appropriate place to put user startup scripts to start user application during system boot ? Seems "/etc/rc.d/rc?.d/Sxxxx" no longer an endorsed way with SuSE 7.1 anymore, doesn't it ? 2. I have installed a SCSI hard disk together with a SCSI DAT tape drive after installing the SuSE 7.1 software onto the primiary booting IDE harddisk. Now, while I can access the SCSI HD without any problem, I have no idea on how to access the DAT tape drive. I can see that there are devices "/dev/0s?" and "/dev/1s?" and that's it. Do I need to "mknod" or "mkdev" for more SCSI devices ? What devices should I correspond to the tape drive if it has SCSI ID equals 5 ? BTW, I am using the Tekram 390 SCSI controller card. Any pointers are welcomed. 3. Can anyone please explain to me about the version of GNU C compiler ? Sometime people refer to it as version 2.x.x and sometime saying about libc version 5 or 6. How are they correlated ? It seems that almost all RPM packages pre-built for RH would complaint during installation on SuSE about the C libraries versions. Can I safely skip the dependency check on this ? Any suggestions, hints or pointers are highly welcomed. Regards, Raymond.

SuSE 7.1 iso?

Hi.... Is there a SuSE 7.1 iso out there somewhere? Otherwise, which files do I need to download for a small or standard installation so that I can create my own iso. I guess all packages don't fit in one cd ;-) Another thing would be, can I replace the old rpm's with the new updated ones so that I don't have to update it. Easier that way if you only have a modem or something ;-) You don't wan't to end up like with windowsupdate.microsoft.com ;-) thanks alex

Notes and comments on SuSE 7.1 install

[BCC'd to feedback(a)suse.de so as to avoid list replies going there] Having recently gone through the SuSE 7.1 installation four times in quick succession (yay for reinstalling after a break-in) I have some comments that the folks at SuSE, and users of SuSE, may or may not be interested in. Many of these are minor issues, but it's the attention to detail that makes a distro great, right? 1) When you are asked to choose a root password and a user password in the installation process (and presumably anywhere in YaST2) it doesn't allow the '@' character. I assume this is a bug. 2) The RPM update for apache conflicts with the update for mod_ssl; the update for apache also conflicts with various Perl apache modules. Easily gotten around with --nodeps, but annoying nonetheless. 3) If you install using YaST2, then attempt to save your installation config using YaST1, it will succeed, but the package list will not be recognized by YaST1 if you try to use it later. It really sucks to find this out right after your disk has been wiped for a reinstall. 3a) YaST2 should really have a way to save the config of a particular machine to floppy, and to load said configuration during an install, a la YaST1. It would have saved me loads of trouble. 4) The DM option in /etc/sendmail.cf is set to YAST_ASK, which is really annoying, because YaST never asked. So when sendmail didn't work I had to go track this down. 5) If you're using YaST2, and select "minimal install", it doesn't install X. This is fine, until the system installs LILO and restarts, at which point you get a blank screen because the system automatically went to tty7. If you know enough to press alt-f1, you get YaST2 back, but you have to know to do it. 6) If you want ypbind, and try to configure it using YaST1, it won't let you specify that you want to find an NIS server by broadcast instead of by IP. This has been a problem since at least SuSE 6.4. 7) The default configuration of the 3c90x ethernet module generates the following warning message on boot: insmod: Warning: /lib/modules/2.2.18/net/3c90x.o parameter switchdelay has max < min! Not a big deal, but it looks bad. 8) Right after my installation, I downloaded and installed the updates that SuSE had posted on the website. I later discovered the YaST2 online update. It's a great tool (and free, unlike RH up2date!), but it doesn't recognize when I've manually updated a package. So I had to let the program re-download and re-install all the patches that I'd already installed. Waste of bandwidth, really. 9) When I configured my static IP (no special routing or anything) I found that the default route wasn't ever added. So I had to go into the "expert" configuration and add it myself. So those are my nitpicks. I also want to express my happiness that the init scripts are now in /etc, and that the runlevels now match Redhat's. It makes it a lot easier to tar up and save system configurations, and to install generic RPMs without having to move around rcN symlinks. -tara

Which Kernal to use

Hi All, I have been looking at upgrading my kernal from the RPM at ftp.suse.com I have noticed several RPM there I have version 7.1 of SUSE on a Laptop. Is there a list somewhere that I can read to find out which of the RPM I need to install or do I need to do several RPM to make the kernal upgrade work I wish/need to still have PCMCIA usage for networking. Yast2 destroying /etc/modules.conf

Every time I try to configure in my network card (3com 3C905C) using YAST2 under 7.1 I get an error saving /etc/modules.conf, and when I look in /etc afterwards the file has been renamed "modules.conf.-". Questions: a) can I provide more information to help get this fixed in Yast2 and b) can I fix my system? Keith

Just for fun........ This is probably old news to some, but I recently bought Soldier of Fortune for Linux from ebworld.com ($9.99 U.S. plus S&H). It installed without a single problem on 7.1 (stock 2.4 kernel; 500MHz AMD; GeForce2MX; Soundblaster Live). So far it runs beautifully on full screen at 1024 x 768. multidrop mailbox and fetchmail

Hi I have a multidrop mail account at my hosting company (not my isp) it is basicly cathall anyname(a)mydomain.com is valid. I can get the mails to the local users mailbox no problem with fetchmail as long as it is sent TO localuser(a)mydomain.com or CC localuser(a)mydomnain.com. The problem starts with BCC and mailing lists then everything goes to postamaster which is root. here is what I have in my fetchmail what I am doing wrong I have tried with procmail as MDA also but it did not help since in the headers there is to information such as Delivered To or X-Delivered-To as it says in the fetchmail man page (also it says multidrop box is problematic) __________ poll dinamizm via mail.dinamizm.com with proto POP3 and options no dns localdomains dinamizm.com : username "xyz" there with password "1234" to * options pass8bits warnings 3600 #mda "/usr/bin/procmail -d %F %T" antispam 571 550 501 554 _________ TIA -- Togan Muftuoglu
