Breathing Fresh Air. Switched 100% to Linux this morning

Hello All, Today is finally the day that I made the move to work 100% within Linux. SuSE 7.1 and Applix Office finally arrived just before the w/e. So Sunday night when baby and wife were in bed I slapped it on my laptop and my old desktop machine. Everything went very smoothly. Then I set up the desktop to act as a router for my laptop (only has winmodem in it) and that worked fine. I could access the net from both Linux and Windows. This morning when I came in early to the office I set up a new PCMCIA scheme and was able to access the web via the office Windows 2000 server (have almost persuaded them to switch to an old pc with Linux on - using a Windows 2000 server on someones workstation just for net access is overkill). Sweet. Imported all 124MB of e-mails from Outlook 2000 via Outlook Express 5 and the KMail import utility. Worked beautifully. Setup all my e-mail accounts. Great. Setup filters (a few problems - see separate post). Few minor problems (star office still not working probably to do with Xfree86 4.02. when I have time will switch back to 3.x; also wheel mouse not configured yet - again that can wait). The new Applix installed without any hitches. Applix is both great and disappointing. Disappointing because it doesn't do a very good job of importing my simple one page Word97 documents and fails miserably on my somewhat complex Excel97 spreadsheets. Exciting because it works very nicely in new documents. At the end of the day I am happy with it and confident that it will be fine for a daily word processing workhorse. The important information in the word documents is all visible and still formatted OK. It's only the headers and footers that are messed up, as to the Excel files, OK I'll just have to get StarOffice working properly. Now the last major hurdle (for the time being of course!) is the office printer. It is a Xerox Docuprint P8e laserprinter. It is connected to a Win98 work station in a peer-to-peer network (although this might change if they ever get the Windows 2000 server sorted out properly). The driver on the win98 workstation is for an HP Laserjet 6L PCL printer. Works fine under windows. I have followed the manual and set up both pre-filter and forwarding queue. Checked it and double checked it. When I enter the command: lpr -hp /some/ascii/file/to/print I get the response: lpr: connect: Connection refused. I can ping the workstation with the printer on it no problem. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I should do next? If I can sort this out today it really will *make*my*day*. Patch vs. update vs. install

I recently installed SuSE 7.1 and have been trying to figure out how patching, updating, and installing relate to one another and to the facilities in Yast1 and Yast2: The URL for patching is "http://www.suse.com/en/support/download/updates/71_i386.html". That page contains a list of package names and descriptions of why they need to be updated. The URL for updating is "ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse_update/7.1/". It contains a partial list of disk collections (a1, a2, etc.). The URL for installing is "ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/7.1/suse/". It appears to contain all disk series for the entire system. Interestingly, the installation page does not contain the kernel collection ("kernel") to be found on the updating page. Another puzzle is that all the directories on the installation page are dated March 16, while those on the update page have various dates, some earlier, some later. Nowhere have I seen any explanation about how the three pages relate to one another or the purposes to which each should be put. Both Yast1 and Yast 2 have facilities for updating and installing; Yast2 also has a facility for online patching, which goes (I believe) to the patch page. But the URLs for patching and for installing are different (as shown above). Yast1 doesn't seem to have any facility for patching. I can't see how to set the URL for updating in Yast2, although it can be done in Yast1 through the FTP option of "install packages". Both Yast2 and Yast1 seem to have analogous operations for setting the URL for installing. To add to the confusion, one form of updating is to do a selective installation, installing newer packages only. And I haven't even looked into what's available on the German ftp site. Can someone make sense of all of this for me? For instance, how does one do an update (based on the update page) in Yast2? Paul Abrahams

My XFree86 logs are pretty much junked up by icons not found right now, so I'll wait until I fix the icon problem and look at it again tomorrow. Between 7.0 and 7.1 SuSE completely changed its icon locations, which broke .fvwm2rc. -- Overflow on /dev/null, please empty the bit bucket.

The GLIMMER Editor on SuSE

Hi everyone, As I said a few weeks ago, I am looking for a nice replacement for UltraEdit for Windows in Linux. Someone recommended GLIMMER (a GTK+ app), however unfortunately, I can't seem to install the package or compile it. It only has a RedHat RPM, but the file it looks for is the same file it looks for if I try to manually compile it (libpython2.0.so.0.0). I have python installed, but I can't seem to figure out how to get it to find libpython2.0.so.0.0. Any ideas? Slow kde2.1 + XFree86 4.0.3

After upgrades from SuSE7.1pro base, kde starts up *very* slowly, whether or not it tries to restore previous desktop -- up to 30 seconds until progress box disappears. A new window takes about 1 sec. This is on an unloaded 2@400mhz all-scsi computer, w/ linux4.2.2 and SVGA server. And, by the way, in kde2.1, many apps (e.g., xosview, emacs) do not get restored; but with same settings they did in 2.0. Any ideas? jim bennett jbennett(a)syr.edu

Kernel Compilation Error

Hi All, I was trying to install 2.4.3 and everything went fine until i tried to make the bzImage. I few minutes into the make and I got the following error: net/network.o(.data+0x3684): undefined reference to `sysctl_ipx_pprop_broadcasting' make: *** [vmlinux] Error 1 I have no idea what the problem is since i did a cloneconfig.
