[SLE] LS-120

I am trying to use a LS120 drive with Linux SuSE 6.4. My LS120 works well with Windows98 and is conncected through tha parallel port (LPT1 under Windows) that I am currently using also for my printer. I read several messages on various usegroups and I followed this suggestion kindly sent by mhgraham(a)umich.edu: modprobe parport modprobe parport_pc modprobe lp (these modules may already be loaded) modprobe epat (the EPAT parallel-port protocol used by the LS-120) modprobe pf (the parallel-port IDE-floppy module) mkdir /mnt/ls120 mount /dev/pf0 /mnt/ls120 Everything is OK up to the last line, i.e. to the mount process. The driver ma)kes some noises, and it goes on making noises, but the device is not mounted (I waited several minutes and tried several times. I am sorry to say that I asked this question to the SuSE support, but their answer was disappointing. They told me to read the parport documentation, which I had obviously already read... Can anyone recommend a good Internet site for understanding the choices among different variants of current hardware? Examples: Motherboards: the choice among Slot A, Socket A, Socket 7, Slot 1, etc.? Disk access: what is ATA66 all about? How about other forms of disk access? Memory: variations among memory types with the same capacity, e.g., 64M? USB: what's involved in retrofitting it to an existing machine? Is it worth doing? I've ran into at least one ISP who treated telneting to a mail port as a prelude to an attack, and threatened all sorts of legal action, citing several state statutes, and promising to cancel my account at the next _hint_ of an attempt. Now granted, Yahoo! isn't in my state (Nebraska), so hopefully the same state statutes wouldn't necessarily apply, but I'm a little gunshy after that last one (and that was almost a year ago!) [SLE] ISDN console monitoring tool

Dear all, I know for certain that there is a list to discuss ISDN-related stuff and therefore another email will be sent in parallel to this one to the proper email address... Let me get to the point... I've been searching the web for a console (NON graphical) tool to monitor the ISDN link, specially the transfer rates and overload peaks. I need it to be non-graphical because the output will be parsed into a HTML document, among others... Any suggestions are welcomed! [SLE] WvDial

Hi everyone, A basic Q - how do I tell WvDial to run "ip-up.local" located in /etc/ppp directory. The permissions are right and it is executable - but does not run automatically when ppp connection is established - any idea why? [SLE] Xfree4.01 install

Hi I am still trying to install Xfree4.01. When I run the Xinstall.sh script, I get told : ln: cannot create hard link "gnu-tar" to "extract" : Operation not permitted. I am SU and logged in as ROOT. my GNU-TAR works with just tar...and if I try to manually link extract to tar...Operation not permitted. Any help welcome. I don't recall having device busy. We may have stoppedn and restarted the nfs server on the VALinux server. FWIW, I have used Netgear FA310TX's 10/100Mb PCI cards w/ little difficulty, as well as a 3Com 905b based card as well. Most likely you will want to look for PCI cards as it is difficult to find ISA cards that support 100Mb, and the speed difference is easily worth the price difference. I picked up some 10Mb isa cards a year or so ago off ebay 5 for $35. A Netgear FA310TX can often be found for btwn $20-30 each, or less if you're lucky. Monte ===== "Here, catch! [SLE] Libraries

Hello. Burning questions about the libraries. I know there are 2 major systems, the libc5, and glibc. I've read somewere the glibc was the best, and the version is 2. Where is the advantage, and could I compile a program, wich need libc2 under glibc2? What are these libraries doing? How can I check what library I use?
