[SLE] Database in 25 languages xls -> cvs = "??????"

Hello, I use Star Office in SuSE 6.3 . We have created a table in Excel with 25 columns in different languages. I saved the file as Excel 95 and pulled up question marks "?????" for some languages like Cyrillic, German, etc when I tried opening in Star Office. So I tried saving the data in a .csv format (Text Comma Delimited). For the heck of it, I opened it up in Excel again to see what Exel got. Those same question marks appear. And changing fonts does not help. Now we are really concerned as we will need to get this data in MYSQL. Also, what is happening to the data? Well great now I can get work to buy a copy of SuSE 6.4.! Thanks Ian I have here two SuSE Linux 6.1 clusters build with Dell PowerEdge 2300. The first cluster is a general purpose cluster with eight public nodes and one master node, each with dual PIII/450 and 1 GB DRAM, one 100 Mbit/s 3C905B-TX on switched Ethernet. The second cluster is a nine node Beowulf cluster, each node with single PIII/450 and 1 GB DRAM, one 100 Mbit/s 3C905B-TX on a public, switched Ethernet (for data) and an other 100 Mbit/s 3C905B-TX on a private 100 Mbit/s hub making the interconnection between the slave nodes and the master node. The good news for you is that I did not experience any problems whatsoever regarding the SuSE Linux 6.1 installation. I am running a DCHP server on the master nodes and DHCP clients on slave nodes. I replaced the 6.1's DHCP deliver with the official DHCP 2.0 version from ISC, merely because it is "official". The only trick there is that you have to restart the Yellow Pages (NIS) in your own DCHP start-hook in /etc once the IP-address is configured. Oh, and the second trick is that if you have 1 GB of memory you have to declare mem=960M on the LILO prompt of the installation floppy. I later replaced the kernel with 2.2.10 but the same procedure still applies if you want to get started. On the Beowulf cluster I am using PVM and LAM as they come with the SuSE 6.1. There is also a commercial version of a software called Clustor installed, from Active Tools, for parametric execution of non-parallelized programs on clustered environments. Works fine. Today, I will start the installation of SuSE 6.4 on a Dell PowerEdge 2450 slim-line series. I have nothing to report yet, but if somebody drop on this mail and is interested, I am happy to share my experience. Hi, In my small network, I set one machine (10.23.20.1) to be the firewall/print server/caching DNS. All the machines in the network have their name server set to 10.23.20.1 via /etc/resolv.conf: nameserver 10.23.20.1 The problem I am having is that when I run nslookup I get the following error: *** Can't find server name for address 10.23.20.1: Non-existent host/domain *** Default servers are not available On the other hand, if I comment out the nameserver line from /etc/resolv.conf I can have the following session: eahorse:/etc # nslookup Default Server: seahorse Address: 0.0.0.0 > server 10.23.20.1 Default Server: [10.23.20.1] Address: 10.23.20.1 > www.yahoo.com Server: [10.23.20.1] Address: 10.23.20.1 Non-authoritative answer: Name: www.yahoo.akadns.net Addresses: 216.32.74.52, 216.32.74.53, 216.32.74.54, 216.32.74.55 216.32.74.50, 216.32.74.51 Aliases: www.yahoo.com > seahorse:/etc # The strange thing is that only nslookup complains, all other programs seem to work just fine. [SLE] Confusion about tape issues

Most of my confusion regarding tape drives/tapes and how to most properly use them comes from years of using tapes in the dos/windows environment. Apparently, the floppy tape portions of the kernel don't apply to me, which would make sense as my tape drive is a SCSI-2 Connor CTMS 3200 Rev 7.15. I use QIC-WIDE 3080 tapes, which are supposed to support 2 gigabytes native/4 gigabytes with compression. I've got enough of these things, that I'm just as happy to not use compression if I don't have to. Having said that, here's my questions: 1. Do I need to format these tapes prior to writing to them? If so, what utility should I use to do this? This stems from having discovered "ftformat" (floppy tape format) for QIC-80 based tapes. I'm assuming if one type of tape needs formatting, so do others. 2. Has anyone else had any experience with this type of drive and tape combination? If so, could you relate your thoughts as to reliability, performance, etc... Anecdotes about problems and any solutions you discovered are most welcome. 3. Other than tar, dump, and the 3rd party BRU, can anyone recommend a feature-packed backup program? Command line or X based are fine, I'm willing to experiment with either. Right now I'm giving preference to command line, as the file server I have the tape drive on doesn't have X installed on it, and even if it did, I haven't figured out how to get an X session on my workstation to control an X session on my file server (yet). But that's another post to come later. I was using BRU a few weeks back, and trying to do a full backup of approximately 40 gigs of data on the file server (Backup / and everything below). The problem I experienced was I got to tape 7, and got the following error message: "/dev/tape: Input/output error" Needless to say, after backing up most of the day, I was a bit disgusted. Either I made a mistake and had actually backed up on 7 tapes and forgot to switch to tape 8, or something really did go wrong with tape 7. The error is the same error I'll get if I try to execute "/usr/bin/mt -f /dev/tape erase" after executing "/usr/bin/mt -f /dev/tape offline", without switching tapes, so maybe I did forget to switch tapes. *sigh* That'll teach me to not keep a running written log as I do the backup. Anyway, I'm rambling. This could be because the ide-scsi module has taken over, in which case the CD and/or Zip drive may be seen as Generic SCSI devices. Try running 'sgcheck' and see if that turns anything up. Other than that, check to see if the /dev/xxxx entries actually exist with the correct major/minor numbers (as seen in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/devices.txt) - if in doubt post the output to the list. [SLE] "Boot failed:" trying to upgrade to 6.3

I didn't get very far trying to upgrade my VA Research VARstation 28 from SuSE 5.3 (which came preinstalled from VA); the first attempt, after inserting the 6.3 bootdisk and doing "init 6" after the usual shutdown messages, I got the colorful linuxrc screen, and in a text area below the color, a message said "initdisk.gz..." or something like that. Then after maybe ten seconds, the next message was: "SYSLINUX 1.48 0x3812e44a Copyright (C) 1994-1999 H. Peter Anvin Boot failed: please change disks and press a key to continue" All subsequent attempts have gone straight to the syslinux message without any of the linuxrc screen. I only saw the "initdisk.gz" message the first time. Maybe that sequence is useful info; I don't know. The box is a SCSI system, using a Symbios 8951 Ultra-2 controller, and in the /boot directory are a bunch of kernels named things like "va-generic-2.0.35-3.single.vmlinuz" and "va-monolithic-2.0.35-3.single.vmlinuz" and corresponding config and map files. The working kernel, vmlinuz, is a symlink to that generic kernel mentioned above. Can someone give me a clue as to the meaning of the error message, does it mean my floppy disk is damaged, or that I need a special kernel on it to upgrade this box? I can read an old ext2-formatted floppy with this drive, so I assume the drive is ok. Is there a backup disk image I can dd onto a new floppy on the 6.3 CDs somewhere, and if so, where? The manual hints at being able to supply "SYSLINUX (supplied bootdisk)" with kernel parameters, but I don't seem to be offered a prompt, or any other obvious place to enter parameters. I damaged the 5.3 YaST on this machine by suffering a power failure while YaST was running, so I was hoping to use this upgrade process to get a new, working YaST into the system. But if I can't even boot from the floppy, that plan seems kaput. I suppose now that SuSE 6.4 has been announced, I've dawdled around with 6.3 too long to get real, official installation support. If I need to compile a special kernel, and build a special boot disk with linuxrc and YaST and who-knows-what-all on it, I really don't know quite where to begin.
