[SLE] question about launching program as regular user

Greeting all: After installing StarOffice in /progs/SOffice/, I can run soffice as root. However, when I try to launch it as a regular user, it asked me to install it again. I did not want to do it because I don't want to have two copies of StarOffice. However, I am not sure if I can install it over the same directory /progs/Soffice. I checked the permission of the /progs/Soffice and everyone is allowed to execute it. So what should I do? Do I have to install another copy for regular users? Does it happens to other programs as well? How can I install a program but everyone can use it but with their own personal setting? Thanks for your help. So I cannot just setup two interfaces with real ip numbers and have internal machines behind the second interface using real ip numbers? I want the linux box to be a firewall using ipchains on an existing network. Read "man swat". Activate swat by uncommenting the relevant line in inetd.conf & restart the network. Set up root as a samba user initially - smbpasswd -a root. As root, run netscape, point it at http://localhost:901 and the full range of samba options will be available to you in Advanced view. You need to set samba as a logon server, and optionally a domain master. Make sure it exports a netbios name to your liking. Add your users to samba with smbpasswd - I'd recommend you run with encrypted passwords. When your users logon to the box your /netlogon/%u.bat will be run. CHICAGO, March 1, 2000-Six Greenpeace activists (and four ?polar bears?) were arrested today at the BP Amoco headquarters after they constructed a renewable energy camp to spotlight the company?s complicity in the global warming crisis that is destroying polar bear habitat. Just after the activists delivered to the company a video message from a sister camp stationed near BP Amoco?s Arctic oil site, the activists were removed in a paddy wagon and the camp was dismantled and confiscated by police. ?We tried to engage the company executives in a dialogue, but they weren?t prepared to meet with us,? said Greenpeace climate specialist Iain MacGill. ?While we are disappointed, we are not surprised that they are doing there best to avoid facing up to the reality of global warming. These company executives are smart, and they know by now that their Arctic oil plans fuel global warming and directly risk the fragile Arctic environment.? The Greenpeace activists created the protest camp at BP Amoco headquarters just two days after it established Ice Camp Sirius on the frozen Arctic Ocean near the site where BP Amoco intends to build its controversial Northstar offshore oil facility. If allowed to proceed, the BP Amoco project will open a new frontier for oil drilling in the Arctic. The purpose of the Chicago camp was to bring ?ground zero? for global warming-the Arctic-to BP Amoco?s doorstep and to call on the company to abandon Northstar and reinvest the money in mass production of solar technology. ?The Arctic is warming faster than anywhere else on the planet, three to five times the global rate? said Dan Ritzman, Greenpeace spokesperson, from the Arctic Ice Camp. ?BP Amoco promotes itself as a green oil company concerned about global warming, yet it continues to drill in new oil frontiers.? Ice Camp Sirius is also powered by wind and solar energy sources-an overt challenge to BP Amoco to make good on its claim that it will push ahead with solar power. The protesters, equipped with polar survival gear and state-of-the-art communications equipment, lived in tents for 15days while waiting for the cargo plane to arrive with the two survival huts, which will be powered by wind generators. "This is ground zero for global warming - the Arctic is warming faster than anywhere else on the planet," said Dan Ritzman, Greenpeace Climate Campaigner at Ice Camp Sirius. "BP Amoco promotes itself as a green oil company that is concerned about global warming, yet continues to drill in new oil frontiers with projects such as Northstar. It's time for BP Amoco to put its money where its mouth is and shift its investments away from fossil fuels and toward climate-friendly forms of energy such as solar power," said Ritzman. If built, BP Amoco's Northstar project would produce oil from an artificial island six miles off Alaska's north coast. Oil would be transported ashore in a pipeline buried beneath the seabed. Subsea pipelines are untested and unproven in the Arctic Ocean, an environment of solid or broken ice for more than nine months of the year, of extreme temperatures, harsh storms and months of darkness. Due to these and other factors, an oil spill would be unable to be cleaned up for over 50 per cent of the year. In a 1998 draft environmental impact study the US Army Corps of Engineers estimated the chance of a major oil spill at one in four. If the Northstar project is built, it will open the door for several other offshore drilling projects and for leases and drilling throughout the Beaufort Sea. Opening this new oil frontier will have grave consequences for the climate as well as the polar bears, whales, seals and other wildlife that call the Beaufort Sea home. "Greenpeace is campaigning against Northstar to stop global warming at its source and to prevent irresponsible oil drilling in the Arctic Ocean," said Steve Sawyer, head of the Greenpeace Arctic Project in Anchorage, Alaska. "The science of climate change tells us that we cannot afford to burn even one-quarter of all known fossil fuel reserves without risking dangerous levels of global warming. On February 12, eight Greenpeace protesters used snowmobiles to get to a site near Reindeer Island, approximately seven miles east of the planned site for Ice Camp Sirius, and 10 miles north of Prudhoe Bay. Equipped with full survival gear and telecommunications equipment, they spent 15 days living in tents while they prepared the runway and waited for the DC-3 cargo plane. On February 26, the DC-3 arrived with survival and telecommunications equipment. While the plane circled the airstrip, a parachutist jumped from the plane. The parachutist was necessary to help guide the DC-3 on its approach and landing on the airstrip. I've done the first part of this. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any menu option in yast that would let me install a floppy drive. Just about any other kind of hardware, but not a floppy drive. [SLE] dual boot and partitions?

Well thanks to all I got my system working fine with Win2K and Linux. I did cheat at the end and use a third party boot manager, found both OS's fine and works super. Now a related question. Here's how a formatted using FDISK 1 primary DOS 200M Extended using rest of drive about 25G 1 logical 5G NTFS Win2K not intended to be seen or used by Linux 1 logical 7G Linux partition not used by Windows, in it: swap partition / partition /root partition 1 logical 300M FAT16 partition used for downloads 1 logical 5G FAT32 partition Linux at boot reports hda= hda1, hda2, (hda6 hda7 hda8) hda9 hda10 hda11. I think hda9 is my 300M fat16 partition. Is there any way I can access the files from that partition? I'd like to if needed download when in windows and then get the files from Linux. When I mount hda9 and get 'ls' it shows files but then next to every entry says something like "no such file or directory" Also when I installed Linux I tried first to select partitions that were not adjacent to each other. I was not allowed to do that. Is that correct all partitions that Linux uses have to be adjacent? Or was that just for install? Can I add the fat16 hda9 into my fstab? [SLE] DSL PPPO and Bell Atlantic

I'm trying to get set up for Bell Atlantic's DSL. They are telling me on the tech (no)support line that I have to use either NT workstation 4.0 (not server, mind you), some DOS based windows e.g. Windows98. Since I don't run any of these, I am in something of a fix. I do own a copy of NT workstation, but I would hate to install it just to make an internet connection. Does anybody know if and how I could use Linux to make my DSL connection to Bell Atlantic? The people I spoke with really don't know how this works other than that I have to install BA's software. It uses something they call PPPO (PPP over ethernet) anybody know what this is? [SLE] Disk Copy Bootdiskette?

Hello, I need to DiskCopy my SuSE 6.2 Bootdisk. Got a command for this? I'm looking at 'dd' but the "Linux in a nutshell" does not give an example nor does the man. SuSE manual seems silent on DiskCopy. And what format does the new diskette need. minix or ext2fs?
