If I could see some examples of such simple setups, it would help a lot. I'm hoping I don't really have to read thousands of pages of good books from O'Reilly just to pass mail to and from my ISP. Can someone point me to some documentation for this simple case? I want to download and install and work with Midgard, a web site document manager. It requires glib-1.2.8, and as far as I can tell, I have 1.2, so need to upgrade. I went to gnome site, and found only glib-1.2.8.tar.gz, and no rpm, so the question is, what is recommended? I am a newbie, and don't "grok" the concepts surrounding install and upgrade stuff very well. The manual says, use rpm, which will uninstall, install, upgrade as needed with the proper command. Well, my options are, ask here, and/or go looking for a glib-1.2.8 rpm, right? Anyone have a suggestion, pointer, as I think this is probably a critical set of files to be playing with. And, after some 15 days or so, I have just been pleased as punch with the SuSE Professional7.0 version. Marvelous Work, folks. Thanks, Tom

Simply booting a linux boot disk shouldnt set any warnings off, although if you try to install LILO to the boot sector of a disk with the anit-virus setting on, you'll have that nice little message pop up! Make sure you disable it when installing your OSes (especially Windows if you're gonna install it) as it can sometimes cause problems. Once you have installed your OSes, turn it back on, just in case! KDE 2.0.1 Still Not quite right

I read the /www.kde.org/kde1-and-kde2.html and set everything up as they said. As root or user, if I am in init 2, WINDOWMANAGER=kde2 startx, KDE2 starts perfectly, remembers changes I make and exits cleanly. HOWEVER, if use any other command, like startx kde2, the old kde1 setup comes up just like it always has. ALSO, if I am in init 3 and choose kde2 from the drop down list, as root or user, it still starts in kde1. What makes X think that kde1 is some kind of default windowmanager? How can I stop this behavior? Other than using the first command line that I mentioned above. Thanks for the tip,yes indeed the SuSE`s version of kdebase-2.0.1-0 is a strange piece.I tried to make it work but it is just too hard and I aint have time to spent my life over it "it`s beatifull day out there".After downloading KDE`s version of kdebase-2.0.1-0 for SuSE6.4 and installed it in less than a minute with YAST1 my problems with customizing desktop and have kde2 remembering changes and not oweriding them instaed are over. Hi I've just finished setting up a linux box to act as an internet gateway & firewall, tho i'm not sure whether it's secure. I have currently blocked all incomming CONNECTIONS from ports 0 to 1023 except for 20, 21 and 80 (as the machine is also being used for a web & ftp server). I know that this range of ports are used by services run as root, so should this be enough? I was considering blocking connections from 0 to 65535 but this would mean 'real' ftp wouldnt work for me and i'd have problems running Halflife multiplayer games - oh no!!! Thanks, Andrew

I've tried the SuSE rpm but it kicks back a list of failed dependencies (even when using --force). I read a message here on the list about installing the SuSE RPM then compiling the source and copying the .so files but I don't see any .so files after I compile. What am I doing wrong? Spunk
